  1. Me and my bro have very similar taste. I remember when we were both young (around '86) our dad took us to the local record store as said we could chose a record. I choose 'Invisble Touch' by Genesis and my brother choose 'Kind of Magic' by Queen. At the time he thought he choose the best path my now recognises that my choice was far wiser in the long run.

Common threads that have run through our collections are Neil Young and Pink Floyd (and lesser known UK bands Marillion and Archive). However, its apparent that with the Neil Young Archives and the upcoming Floyd re-issues we are both going to be poorer in the next couple of years.....and are respective wives are not going to be happy!!.

...and my sister has shocking taste in music. Three words...Wet, Wet, Wet. Two more...Bon Jovi.

  2. Agreed about Jenny - I get the sense that she is a strong person, though

Love the new album, and hey, I really liked Hazards in a different way too, both really well done in their own elements

The Columbus show a few weeks back was very good, we got "The Tain" opener too, and "The Mariner's Revenge Song" at the end

Yeah 'Hazards' seems to be getting a load of stick which, whilst understandable, is unjustified. Taken as what it is I think its a fine piece of work. There is probably a bit more filler on that record but alot of concept albums suffer from that. Wanting Comes in Waves and Hazards Part IV arevery very strong pieces of music.

  3. I will get this in a day or two, have been looking forward to it

as for MMJ, loved the two shows I saw, not so much into their recent studio output

Hey...Love your Gabriel Batwings picture. I'm a huge Genesis fan. Don't see much mention of them around these parts.

  4. It's getting so you don't want to buy a record when it first comes out because you know a few months later the deluxe copy with the extras comes out. I just wish they would offer the basic and the deluxe version at the same time.

This is so true. Both the National and Arcade Fire have pulled this stunt in recent months. Wilco have also done similar. It's a bit naughty really.

  5. Some are great some are a waste.I am a HUGE Rem fan but I have not yet found the value of the remasters as I have heard most of the other songs on the second disc.

The Cure have released some amazing remasters with a great second disc filled with many unavailabe tracks. It pains me still to buy them as I already have the lp and cd...how many times do I need to buy the same album remastered or not. I think these artist should release as a seperate package the outtakes etc but that is usually not the case.

Yeah I suppose it a case by case thing. I admitedly just remembered the three expensive 'Genesis' Box sets that are sitting in my front room. Maybe they are cynical re-packagin exersizes..but I love 'em. Floyd were good but Genesis ruled back in the seventies!!

  6. Following on from the Pink Floyd thread what's people's thoughts on the growing market of re-mastered, re-packaged, deluxe and now 'immersion' editions of artists back catalogue. Increasingly expensive coffee table artefacts which seem to be the norm these days.

When I saw the details of the Floyd re-releases my first thought was 'I wish Tom Waits (my musical hero) would do something like this'. When I thought some more I quickly realised that's the last thing I would want. It just seems too clinical and the result of board meetings rather than something organic and, in the most cases, genuinely revealing or rewarding. I suppose a lot of it relates to whether an artist is active and, in Tom's case, still putting out vital material.

The Neil Young Archives releases are a strange beast which falls in both camps. Some great live performances being released but at the same time a feeling that I am being willingly fleeced of my hard earned cash. I must have brought 'Everybody knows this is nowhere' five times now (admittedly the recently released ...or OPS02 if you will...vinyl edition is superb).

Anyway, what's your thoughts on this....and are we all waiting for the six-disc, multi-format, interactive, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot to appear!

  7. Having the entire catalogue on vinyl (minus momentary lapse and divison bell) I think I have no interest in this. The Floyd were my first musical love and I just went back a month ago a spinned some early stuff. I sometimes resent (maybe that is too strong) how they are marketed or percieved or whatever. I hate to think of the floyd as the marching hammers, or The Wall artwork, or the later years light show band. I prefer to think of the floyd as the early seventies Ummagumma or Meddle era floyd. Just go look at those pictures of these English hippie looking dudes. Now that is far out. Man I love some 1969-1975 floyd

I'm with you on this although Animals falls into the period I love. The later two albums are far removed from the Floyd I knew.

It all become's a bit clearer here. New 'Best of'. Dark Side, Wish You Were Here and Wall released in three versions: Discovery (for new listeners), Experience (for those with more than a passing interest) and the Immersion (for Floyd-Heads). The Wall immersion edition will be Seven Discs. All very impressive.

    And...vinyl also in the pipeline.

Hard Core Floyd fans (of which there are many) are all going to be a bit poorer (financially) over the next twelve months.

  9. I apologize in advance if there is already a thread on this.

The first time I heard this, I was not very impressed.

But I after a couple listens, I absolutely love this.

I think the dense production demands some patience and multiple listens.

After the disappointment of MMJ's Circuital being just 'pretty good', I am really digging this release.

Yeah I'm going to have to give this a listen. Loved the last two records. I am holding off on Circuital until release day but as long as it's beter than Evil Urges I'll be satisfied.

  10. I'm a big fan of Grant-Lee Phillips, both on his own and in GLB. Would love to have seen one of these GLB shows, but of course they aren't playing anywhere near me.

I did see Phillips play solo a year or so ago, and he was fantastic. Highly recommended, if you get the chance.

It does appear that Mighty Joe Moon was released on vinyl, at least in the U.K.

His solo records have been consistantly great and been consistantly overlooked. 'Mobilise', 'Virgina Creeper' and 'Little Moon' are all top drawer. These new GLB shows are interesting (haven't seen any) because they were a phenominal live band back in the day.

  11. I didn't like any of the Deer Bands. Bird bands however probably covers a wider base:

    1) Black Crowes;

    2) Jayhawks;

    3) Byrds

    4) Eagles

    5) The Hawks

    6) The Housemartins

    7) The Ducks (One for the Neil Young fans)

    8) The Cardinals

I vote for the Jayhawks although The Hawks turned into a pretty good outfit too.

Best songs about Birds: 'Woodpeckers From Mars' by Faith No More

  12. I hope Jenny makes a full and speedy recovery. It seems like they caught it early.

There is a lot of love for the new record which is great to see. I am really enjoying it. It feels like a timeless album and works really well in a vinyl format (i.e two sides of four/five songs). It doesn't overstay its welcome either. Good to see artists not trying to cram too much material onto an album. Just 'cos a CD can hold 80 minutes there's no reason to bung everything on it.

  13. I was listening to the '94 Yes album 'Talk'. Forgot how good some of the songs were on that record. A somewhat undervalued album in the Yes catalogue. I still listen to that ABWH album and the subsequent live release.

  14. I have dipped my toe into Will Johnson's work but need to explore more. I have his solo record, which is great, and also the South San Gabriel album 'The Carlton Chronicles'. I'll defiantly download the freebie on his Centro-Matic website.

  15. Love Grant Lee Buffalo, and indeed Grant's solo album's. His last record, Little Moon, was really strong. In terms of GLB my favourite is definitely Mighty Joe Moon, although both Fuzzy and Copperopolis are class too.

Its weird seeing so many of these nineties bands touring in 2011. In the UK this year I could see GLB, the Jayhawks, the Black Crowes and Wilco. Those were the four cornerstones bands of my youth. Only Wilco continued to push the envelope into the new millennium, although the last Black Crowes record was mighty fine.

On a side note, has Mighty Joe Moon ever been re-released on Vinyl. I would love me a copy of that album. The artwork was amazing and brings back good memories.

  16. I have tickets for this show. Really looking forward to it. Have seen some great shows at the Academy over the years. The last Wilco show in Manchester that I had tickets for got cancelled so this will be extra special. With regards to UK shows I was at Jeff's show at the Union Chapel in Islington and that was such a special night.

  17. So......if 'A treasure' is Performance Series 9 and 'Dreamin Man' is Performace Series 12 what will make up 10 and 11?

Has to be between the period of '85 and '92. Hopefully we get a bluenotes show and maybe something with 'the Restless' from circa 1989.

It also means that between 1972 and 1984 we have four more releases. Time Fades Away II, Santa Monica Flyers '73, Bottom Line '75?

    Anyone care to speculate?

  18. saw this over on the web 0.0 rustlist...

"On the Hippodrome website, it states with every two Ticketmaster tickets

purchased, fans can choose a free copy of "Le Noise" or "A Treasure".

Interesting, I guess we know now what the next release will be, Some live

    Harvesters!"

    interesting.

That sounds interesting. What's the story regarding 'a treasure'? It's not an album that I was aware of. Is there a tracklist (real or rumoured?). I was thinking we would get the Chrome Dreams/Homegrown/Countryside/Budokan next.

  19. Really loving this record. A solid set of songs with no filler. The two 'Hymns' are both gorgous. Don't think its been mentioned yet but I also love the collection of photo's that adorn the record. I couldn't justify forking out for the deluxe set but the vinyl is pretty nice.

They have an EP coming out as part of 'Record Store Day' which should be pretty interesting too.
