Wild Frank, your Spurs kicked us out of the FA Cup with that 4-0 thrashing but I don't care because the 1-0 victory or Wolves today has us out of the relegation zone! Come on, boys!!
Yeah sorry about that. To be honest I think the relegation dog-fight is of more importance to you guys. You did come into it a bit in the second half but for the first forty-five you let us play too much.
Beating Wolves was a massive three points and I wish you well for the rest of the season. Hopefully when Coyle beds in you might start playing some better football. Talking about good football, we played some nice stuff against you lot. Bale was on fire down the left and Pavlyuchenko looks like he is ready to stake a claim for a first team spot.

And a million Gooner Wilco fans shut down the internet.
I can't beleive that there are any Wilco fans who would support Ar*%nal. That is a contradiction in taste! Seriously, I find it hard to dilike the Gooners apart from the old rivalry. They now play beautiful football (unlike twenty years ago when they were the most boring side on the planet). They are well run and I do applaud their transfer policy. I really feel for young Mr. Ramsey as that one looked a bit painful!!.
We did pretty well at the weekend. Gareth Bale is starting to look like a more than decent player. Its been a really strange season this year, both in the fight for the Premiership and the fourth spot.

Did anyone watch Man. City v. 'Pool? It was not easy on the eyes. I can understand the need to not drop points, as they both want that 4th champions League place but jaysus, playing not to lose is anti-football.
I am seriously concerned for my boys in white. I am not sure if Coyle can pull off a great escape for Bolton. It is odd that when he was at Burnley, they played attacking football, but under Coyle, the Trotters haven't scored in 4 league games and the once-heralded defense is no more. Maybe we should have kept Megson... Knock Spurs out of the FA Cup today, boys!!
I am excited to watchthe Inter/Chelsea tie today. So much drama involved with the gaffers having previously managed their opponents.
As a Spurs fan myself I'm hoping bolton's misery is compounded somewhat tonight. I feel we have enough to see you lot off at White Hart Lane. Still, you never know. We have had some strange results this season. With regard to the Liverpool vs City game...what a horror show. Thankfully Spurs never revert to playing that particular brand of football. Play to win. Outsocre your opponants. That is the only way top play.

I didn't include the Beatles on my list because they transcend everything for me
I feel this way about Dylan. He is so far ahead of everyone else that I don't even bother to mention him in these type of threads. I don't even listen to him that much these days but for influence and sheer body of work he is light-years ahead of everyone else (even The Beatles).

I'm with 'Raindog'. Tom Waits is untouchable in my book. Never put out a bad record and his recent releases are every it as good as anything he has ever done. My favorite band is 'Lambchop' but Wilco come in just behind them, although Sparklehorse run them both pretty close.

I wish that this thread were pinned or at least stayed active. I love football and have few opportunities to discuss it.
There is so much going on now, partcularly in the EPL (the league that I am near-obsessed with). It can't believe that Pompey will be wound up, no matter how much it may be deserved. It would throw the league into chaos, particularly regarding the table. I can't see HMRC doing it. I believe that it will drag on until the end of the season and then the winding up order will come down.
What about the proposal to institute a playoff for the 4th Champions League spot? It is funny listening to the top 4-5 clubs speak against it and the rest are for it. No shit!! I am undecided. It is silly to consider the possibility that a 6th or 7th placed team with 20 points less than the 4th, could make Champions League. After 38 games, the table is the table. If instituted, though, it will soon become a fan favorite just like the final promotion spot playoff in the lower leagues did. It makes for fine sports drama. I guess that I don't care either way!!
Last Tuesday I was going to transfer Matt Etherington into my Fantasy team. I had my finger ready to press enter on 'Confirm transfer' when I thought, "Shit, Stoke have 2 games to play prior to the transfer taking effect the 20th. What if he gets injured?". I held off. The next day they announce that he has knee ligament damage! Whoot! About 20,500 people had transfered him in, as of yesterday 10,500 had shipped him back out, paying a 4 point penalty for an extra transfer. I'm glad that I wasn't one of them.
Now Benny Feilhaber is injured. Not that he is the best USA player but our growing injury list dies not bode well. We have such a kind draw, too. Hopefully, most of those guys, Dempsey, Edu, Onyewu and Holden especially, will be back and in shape. I have been reading reports that Charlie Davies is making an amazing recovery from his auto accident. That would be fantastic. Donovan is playing very well for Everton. It seems as though, it wasn't European football that he sucked at, just the Bundesliga!
I am not embarrassed by this lengthy post. Ha! Who wants to (semi)regularly talk football?
Wow. There's alot in your post. I live in the U.K and, along with most of us here, follow the Premier League with a passion. I'm a Spurs fan myself so things are going pretty well for us this season. Unfortunately we have a long-standing habit of cocking things up so I can't see us qualifying for the Champions League.
The situation at Portsmouth is very interesting and may be the first of many. Hopefully it will bring about a fundamental change in the way football is run over here. The money is now having a detrimental effect on the league so changes need to be made.
Even as a Spurs fan (who would be a beneficiary) I'm against the play-off proposals.
Finally, I've have no idea what your last paragraph was about but it seems to indicate that Americans play football/Soccer
So keep talking footie fans and we can keep this thread on the first page!!

I can think of a few. The three I listed are shoe-ins. Also stuff like Bitches Brew, Physical Graffiti, Blonde on Blonde. The charm in a double-LP is its messiness. It's not going to be concise. That's not the point. It's like a King-sized value meal. You just eat it all up because it's tasty (and surely a good double-LP is easier to take in than a Large Big Mac Value Meal). One bite may not be as good as the rest, but every bite is undeniably important in the consumption of the burger/LP and contributes to the whole tasty experience.
Nicely explained using the classic burger-analogy method. I like a burger but I always take out the gerkins. Most albums have a few ghekins in them!!

I couldn't see a thread on this but.....the new record by Gil Scott-Heron is amazing. He's been off the scene for the best part of twenty years with regard to recorded output. This is a producer-artist type effort in a similar vein to the Rubben/Cash recordings. The results are staggering. Its a very short album, and a lot of it is spoken word pieces, but I would recommend it. There is a 'Massive Attack' feel to alot of the tracks. The title track is a 'Smog' cover I believe.
I don't think I've heard a stronger album this year. Certainly the most pleasantly surprising.

Genesis 'Supper's Ready'. Its 23 minutes long but I could do with a little bit more.
-
very good points here. what got me thinking about all this is the ipod. it's so easy to condense an album on itunes and not have to deal with skipping songs. BUT, do we miss out on the album experience or the 'bad' songs growing on us? just some thoughts.
Agreed. Although, in reference to your Avatar, I will Always skip through 'Old King'!!

This is the saddest song I know. Its by Tom Waits and is called 'I'm Still Here'. For me it's about an old couple and the man and the woman, whilst married, have lost the spark. The woman is pre-ocupied with her life and does not really interact with the man at all. He is still craving romance and the love/lust that used to be present in their relationship. The lyrics are sad on there own but when you hear Tom actually sing the song it will break your heart to pieces. Try it.
You haven't looked at me that way in years
You dreamed me up and left me here
How long was I dreaming for
What was it you wanted me for
You haven't looked at me that way in years
Your watch has stopped and the pond is clear
Someone turn the lights back off
I'll love you til all time is gone
You haven't looked at me that way in years
But I'm still here

I would also say that my favourite album ever has two songs that I don't care for on it. The first eight tracks on 'Nixon' by Lambchop are totally perfect in every way but the last two are average. Its still my favourite record though and I wouldn't want those two songs removed.
-
....and I agree about the My Morning Jacket records. Its no surprise that, in my opinion, 'Z' is their best record. Its consise and limits itself to about 50 minutes. There is no filler and no song outstays its welcome. Arguably 'At Dawn' and 'It Still Moves' both have better songs on them but, as a whole, they don't gell together as well as 'Z'. Unfortunatley they also lost the focus on 'Evil Urges' which was just plain poor.

I can seriously think of no double albums (or 70 minute cd's) that wouldn't be improved by removing a couple of songs. For me an album should be about 45 minutes long, or two sides of a piece of vinyl (That is why Neil Young's Tonights the Night is such a perfect record -It is exactly 45 minutes long. No more, no less!).
However, I can accept the argument about concept albums and things like 'The Wall' or 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway' probably wouldn't work if they were reduced significantly. However, ignoring the concept for a moment, I could easily take tracks off both those albums and improve them, musically.
A recent example for me is Nick Cave's Abbatoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus record. There is about 45 minutes worth of good songs spread accross the two discs. Also, back in the nineties, those GnR 'Use Your Illusions' records. If that had been condensed into one it wouold have been an amazing rock album. I think even 'Blonde on Blonde' would be improved by cutting, for example, 'Pledging my Time', 'Obviously 5 believers' and 'Rainy Day Women'.
There is the counter-arguement that sometimes a good album needs a bad song or two for balance. Generally, most Neil Young albums have one song that I dislike (Apart from Tonights the Night and On The Beach). I couldn't imagine 'Comes a Time' without 'Motocycle Mama' or 'Rust Never Sleeps' without 'Ride My Llama'. So I suppose I've confused myself here somewhat and changed my mind whilst writing this post!! I think?
P.s: I know this has probably been debated to death but....'Being There' could be improved by shortening it by three or four tracks. Personally, I'm religating 'KingPin', 'I Got You' and 'Why Would You...' onto an EP or B-Sides! (ducks to avoid being hit by rotton tomatoes!!).

Looks like an interesting new band (a combination of Grandaddy and Earlimart) is in the offing. Looking forward to hearing some of of the fruits of their labour soon. I must admit I haven't heard anything by Earlimart so will be interesting to hear how this sounds.
-
I'm not sure how their voices would blend these days if they were to do a duet. I love Bob but the only people I want him dueting with are Tom Waits, Keith Richards or Shane McGowan. Now that would be a super-group. Sod the Wilbury's!!

My favourite is definately the 'Cherry Ghost' T-Shirt that is currently available on the website. Very cool.
-
i actually like landing on water. it is horrible, but i like it. i wish he would rework those songs solo acoustic. especially, Drifter.
There is one great song on that record: 'Touch The Night'.

I have many favourite albums but very few of them are perfect from beginning to end. My favourite album ever is Nixon by Lambchop but it has a couple of duff songs on. My very short list of perfect albums would be:
Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece;
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs;
Neil Young - On The Beach;
Neutral Milk Hotel - Aeroplane....;
Micah. P Hinson...and The Opera Circuit;
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue;
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Re-Visited.
Thats about it.

The Beatles put out a bad album? or maybe you don't like the Beatles.
...funny you should say that. Last year I started a thread on here about me not liking the Beatles. It got quite interesting if I recall. I'm not really in a position to say whether or not they put out a bad album but I suppose their recorded output only covered 10-15 years whereas other major artists have had 30-40 years careers. Not sure what my point is....but no, I'm not a Beatles Fan.

Trick of the Tail so so so good. interesting you don't like it. concerning neil young, he's the only artist that i like every damn thing the guy puts out. EVERYTHING. that's not to say i prefer some more than others. objectively, he's got some real cringe worthy music. i love it though!
Yeah I'm not sure why I don't love 'Trick of the Tail'. I much prefer 'Wind and Withering' and 'And Then There Were Three..' from the same period. I totally understand where you're coming from with Neil but no matter how much of a fan I am I still can't stomach some of his output. I still buy everyone on release but some get filed away to gather dust (Everybody's Rockin, Old Ways, Life and Landing on Water especially!).

I wonder if they asked Chris Robinson. That Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes record, Live at the Greek, sounds fantastic.
Whilst I agree that 'Live at the Greek' sounds great I just wish that both Aerosmith and Page/Jones/Bonham would just stop it. The only one with any integrity is Robert Plant who is going off pursuing different ventures instead of living off past glory's.
Although, on a related point, I seem to remember that Coverdale and Page album being a lot better than it had any right to be!

Agree on all points except for Tupelo Honey. Love this one.
In the spirit of this thread and you're love of 'Tupelo Honey' I'll give it another go tonight. Can't fault the title track and also 'Wild Night' but the other tracks haven't hit home. Now 'Veeden Fleece' on the other hand is perfect in every way.
The Genesis Thread

I agree with that. The end of Supper's Ready is about as good as it gets. Perfect. The version on Seconds Out is similarly amazing. For anyone thinking of getting into Genesis I always recommend Seconds Out.
I also think that Selling England is probably the most 'complete' Genesis record. I envy anyone sitting down to listen to it for the first time. Firth or Fifth and Cinema Show are genius (Battle of Epping Forest less so!). As someone else mentioned 'Invisible Touch' is a great record. If you take it on its merits, without the Genesis baggage, its a staggering pop recording. Its also got six hit singles on it.
I have the double disc SACD versions and the interviews on each disc are really interesting. Tony Banks and Peter Gabriel are so 'English'. Just listening to Banks say that 'Watcher of the Sky' wasn't great and is a bit wordy or Gabriel saying he didn't really like 'I know what I like' was amazing. They are so self-deprecating. Also, Phil Collins comes accross really well in the set of interviews. He is the guy in the band who collects all the soundboard recordings and photos etc and is really into the Genesis history which surprised me somewhat.
In reference to the comments that Tony Banks is God I would simply say (Although he is a genius)....God would never write a song as bad as 'All in a mouses night' and therefore Banks can't be God!!
Anyway, its really nice to see all the Genesis love around here. They are such a misunderstood group who deserve a lot more credit.
