  1. Thanks for the excellent review/comments Monster. Didn't really mean that about Aucklanders - was just goading you guys -and it worked! :D

Hey, no need for an apology - recognised it as someone aware of the Auckland/Wellington rivalry just wanting to gently stir things up a bit. Hope my reply didn't come across as being a bit chippy.

Seems you were right anyway :)

  2. Nice work Wellington, you have put Auckland to shame on the reportage.

You've also given us the Phoenix Foundation (I'm enjoying me some Buffalo at the moment) and Jerry Collins, so we'll forgive you for Welly-dub and Kerry Prendergast.......

My bro went to the Wellington show last night, his first Wilco experience and loved it...

  3. Yeah some of the Finns were in the front row. Jeff said 'I stayed at that guys house' pointing. He was pretty chatty actually.

I haven't been paying that much attention to what wilco have been doing live lately so for me it was enjoyable and amusing to hear the robot/computer voice intro for the band in Wilco the song. Singalong in for jesus etc...= woe full. I wonder if New Zealand fandom in general has spiked since 7wc? So maybe they don't know past Sky Blue Sky. (not like me of course. Im cool and got Being There when it came out) I love the way they do reservations these days probably my favorite song of the night.

I think you are right that many NZ music fans have only come to Wilco in the last few years so might be a bit unfamilar with some of the back catalogue. Other than a Big Day Out Festival performance in 2002, they didn't tour here until 2008, when all the shows got great reviews. The 7WC shows last year (which had a reasonably high profile here in NZ)certainly raised awarenes of the band and it's music (having NZ music royalty like Neil Finn declare you as one his favorite bands certainly helps)

I think the bands following will continue to grow here now on, word of mouth is a great thing and the Wilco "virgins" i know that went to last nights show were all absolutely blown away by the experience. So there will be more seeking out the old albums like Summerteeth and Being There. Was a bit surprised that the Jesus etc singalong tanked so badly. Kiwis crowds usually love a singalong and I would have thought YHF would be the album that casual fans would most likely have been exposed to.

  4. I didn't go, and I'm waiting to hear from my friends that did. But what I do know is that there was no Finn jam, though they were backstage...

We got a generous helping of Finn/Wilco live collaboration at the excellent 7Worlds Collide shows last year, with various Finns as stand-in Wilco band members, and we don’t get to see Wilco down here very often. So as much as I’m a really big fan of the various Finns and their work, I’m actually kind of pleased this stayed as a Wilco show.

JT did say plenty of nice things about the time they spent here last summer with the Finns for 7WC, and bantered a bit with Elroy who was sitting in one of the front rows.

  5. Don't expect any reviews from Aucklanders - notoriously useless/lazy. Wellingtonians are a different breed though - and I fully expect our man Mahinty to be on the case tonight with a full set-list/review.

Harsh, but possibly true. As there isn't much else to do in Wellington (the city where one busker with a guitar is known as a "Festival") I'm sure the setlist will be posted promptly by someone with nothing else to do (just joking my Welly friends)

    I'm sure a proper setlist will turn up, but this is my best recollection of what was played, though the order will be wrong;

    Opened with WTS

Then in VERY approximate order; BBN, IATTBYH, You are my face, One wing, Deeper Down, Handshake Drugs, A Shot in the Arm, I'll Fight, Poor Places, Reservations, Nothingsevergonna, Jesus etc, ALTWYS, Hate it here, Walken, Via Chicago, HMD, Hummingbird, Spiders, Monday, Outtasite, ITMWLY

    Encore

    Cali Stars

    You Never Know

    Hoodoo

    I'm a Wheel

And yes, as mentioned in Russel Baillies review, the Jesus etc singalong was woeful so I'm sure Auckland will be dissed in the intro if they play it tonight in Wellington

  6. Europe dragged this country into two world wars

.... and since then, to make up for turning up late to the 2 big ones in Europe, your leaders have ensured prompt attendance by actually starting most of the ones you've been involved in. And on that point, given the playing personal you have, the win-loss record since WW2 against teams that all seem to have a pop-gun offence and a limited but tenacious defence hasn’t been that flash. Time to look at the coaches and management perhaps?

  7. I agree with JohnO on the fact that the government has a horrible track record on running programs. Why should we trust them with healthcare? The reason healthcare is so expensive is because of them in the first place.

I don’t get why so many people in the US seem to be scared of the idea of universal healthcare. The current system certainly doesn’t seem to be working very well.

As a percentage of GDP the US spends almost double the OECD average in total on healthcare.

In terms of spend per capita its even higher; more than double the OECD average in total (private & public) health spending. Even the US public spend is comfortably higher than the OECD average and all but a couple of Scandinavian countries.

The health outcomes in the US don’t seem to be any better than other OECD countries; in fact they are below average when measured on life expectancy or infant mortality, so I don’t think you can argue that US healthcare is that much more expensive because it’s that much better.

So it seems other OECD countries can provide a largely government run system that provides free (or at least heavily subsidized) healthcare for anyone with acute or chronic medical conditions – at pretty much half of what it costs in the US.

I think this puts a bit of a dent in the argument that a government shouldn’t be allowed to run anything and it should be left to the “experts” in the private sector. I think the problem with that is that the private sector are usually more focused on outcomes like achieving a healthy return for shareholders or achieving bonuses, rather than helping as many people as possible get well again for as little cost as possible.

  8. now this is blasphemy...Flying Nun is the greatest label of all time.

    The Chills

    The Clean

    The Bats

    Verlaines

    The Pin Group

    This Kind of Punishment/Jefferies brothers

    Gordons

    Dead C

    The Rip/Alastair Galbraith

    Tall Dwarfs

    Bill Direen/Bilders

all those bands put out totally essential records in the 80s.

    Seen this news?

    Flying Nun

And this....(it's been up for a while and as a FN fan you may have already seen it, worth a watch if you haven't (in 9 parts))

  9. I kinda laughed out loud at reading this. Just saying.

I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more self-absorbed generation in adulthood than the baby-boomers, though the Gen-Xers are showing some excellent potential and might just give them a run for their money.

Back on topic, I think people that video at concerts are sadly missing the whole point of the concert experience. IMHO the videoing is another example of our "look at me" society, the majority of videoers just want to "prove" they were there, so I don't think it's anything to do with them making a record of the concert experience at all. (At this point though i must admit to occassionally enjoying the odd bootlegged concert footage on youtube out of curiosity; generally only if it involves something a bit special or rare, but not if it's just "straight" concert footage as the sound quality is invariably - to use technical parlance - shit.)

I think the fact the band don't want people to video is a good enough reason for everyone to refrain. They are generous enough with what they do allow and what they give away to fans, so i think the least we can do as fans is respect their wishes.

Right, of what was left I eliminated Greece, Malta, Chad and Liberia. The last two were only 24-48 hour stops on a Naval ship but I set foot there so it counts.

    Not sure if this was the latest list (I seem to remember a couple of these being mentioned already) but have trimmed out;

Andorra, Bulgaria, Croatia, Fiji, Monaco, Nepal, Romania, Serbia, Singapore

  11. They'll fill it - Wilco's audience grows every year, and you can't under-estimate the 7WC effect. A lot of people heard them for the first time at that Neil Finn gig - and I think they won a lot of new fans that night.

The Wellington Town Hall is a great venue, it's capacity of 1600 is only a little bit bigger than The Opera House (1400) which they packed-out in 2008. Given the number of people I've talked to who have kicked themselves for not going to that gig a couple of years ago, getting a couple of hundred extra people along next year should be a piece of cake.

Maybe you Wellingtonians are a more discerning and dedicated bunch, but i fear the apathy of the Auckland concert goer.

I don't think they quite sold out the Bruce Mason Theatre in 2008 and that is less than half the size of the Civic - but I hope you're right and they pack the Civic out. You make a good point about the possible 7WC effect - there was a definite buzz at those shows about the Wilco guys performance of their own stuff and their contribution to the other artists' songs. I'll be doing my bit to spread the word anyway.

If there was any justice in this world - and any correlation between quality of music and performance and ticket sales - then they'd sell it out 5 times over (and Lady Gaga would be playing to a "crowd" of 15 kids in a school hall instead of at the Vector Arena next year).

  12. Tickets sorted (row D, 6 rows back) so pretty happy.

I'm excited about seeing them at a lovely old theatre like the Civic. Check out link below to see it in all it's totally over-the-top glory!

    Civic

Is it just me or is this a fairly big venue (2500 capacity) for a band like Wilco to play in Auckland?

Could this mean there might be further developments re supporting artists?

  13. Tickets apparently go on sale today but I can't get through to Ticketek, and there is nothing on their website. Anyone else struggling to buy tix for the Wellie show?

No mention at all for the Auckland show on either the Ticketek or The Edge (Civic) website. Maybe this is all just a cruel, cruel hoax?

  14. I think this story is worthy of a mention. Chris Knox is a Kiwi musician and artist who was one of the foundation acts and an influential figure on the seminal Kiwi indie label Flying Nun. Chris’s music came to us through the low-fi recordings of his bands The Enemy, Toy Love, and The Tall Dwarfs, as well as his solo work. He was also the creator of wonderfully weird and idiosyncratic “home-made” videos.

In June this year Chris suffered debilitating a stroke. There is more info about Chris and this recovery since the stroke in these stories.

    Blog on the Tracks

    Public address

As a tribute to Chris, an impressive lineup of musicians/fans have teamed up to record an albums worth of their takes of Chris’s songs. There are contributions from Jay Reatard, Yo la Tengo, Lambchop, Stephin Merritt, AC Newman, Will “Bonny Prince Billy” Oldham, The Verlaines, The Chills, and numerous others.

You can listen to the tracks here:

    Songs for Chris Knox

There are some great interpretations of his songs on the album, and I don’t think there’s a real dud on the whole thing so it’s hard to pick favorites, but standouts for me are the tracks from David Kilgour, The Mint Chicks, Will Oldham, AC Newman and Yo La Tengo. Not sure of plans for release outside NZ, but some great music and a good cause, so well worth checking out I reckon

  15. So... Here's one theory on how it plays out. They start working on the new songs in January, and get em all knocked into shape at the Loft. Then in Apr-May 2010 they tour downunder again (this is based on a comment John made in a recent interview on when they would next be down here). They stay on after the tour and head into "Uncle" Neil Finn's Roundhead studio (with the whole band and some of their own gear this time) and bang out the bulk of the album, then head back home to finish things off. Album out early 2011. Job done.

...Yeah... I know...you're right....it won't happen like that...(The only part i really want to happen is them touring downunder .... )

  16.

I said in my earlier post that the version of You Never Know on this album is identical to that on W(TA). That is not in fact the case. Someone elsewhere pointed out to me, and my ears have confirmed upon close listening, that there is more instrumentation in the mix on The Sun Came Out (fuzzy guitar, Wurlitzer - both credited to Neil Finn). They're subtle differences (it's still the same take of the song), but they really flesh out the song and I think I prefer this version to the one on W(TA).

Something I found interesting about the 2 versions of this song is that the fuzz guitar and Wurlitzer disappeared from the WTA version, but Neil Finn's harmonies were left on (uncredited)

  17. Some possibly relevant comments in this interview;

    John Stirratt Interview

"Washington City Paper : Wilco (the Album) suggests there’s no new overt sonic agenda. Even though Sky Blue Sky wasn’t billed as experimental as you other releases, it still had a definitive sound. Did the impromptu nature of what transpired in New Zealand contribute to putting down an album of just….songs?

Stirratt: We were interested in getting the best sound we could get. There have been records in that past that may have had some limitations that are taken for a sonic agenda. We wanted the capability to go for a denser sound, a sturdier higher-fi sound with basic tracks on this release.

But every record does have a sort of story, and for this one we were in a very comfortable situation recording in the New Zealand summer when it was winter back home. We did strive to get the best sound, and Jim Scott’s [Wilco (the Album) co-producer and engineer] fingerprints are all over it. There’s also something similar since he [scott] recorded “Can’t Stand It” from Summerteeth. This is the first time we’ve recorded with him since that track. I loved his demeanor then and this record does reflect his sound."

My 0.02 worth; I agree WTA sounds a bit more polished than most of their previous albums, but personally i don't feel the CD sounds like it's been compressed to the point where dynamics and color have been lost from the music. I haven't listened to the vinyl yet for comparison.

I know what you mean though about alot of the stuff released these days being really hard work to listen to - the music ends up coming accross as being in your face and relentless....
