  1. WTA review from the SBS loving (and possibly dyslexic) Russell Baillie of the NZ Herald;

    NZ Herald

And another from Radio NZ - the Wilco section is at the start of the podcast.

    Radio NZ

Some nice observations (apart from the tenuous Crowded House comparisons at the end; I think the only thing the two bands have in common is that they can both pay homage to the Beatles yet still sound unmistakably like themselves).

Album also got a really nice 5 star review in NZ music monthly Real Groove (not available in online version yet)

So lots of favorable coverage for WTA down here - maybe record first week album sales from NZ as well for the boys (which will be about, um, 99 units....)

  2. Dad-rock alert!!!! This story contains references to Wilco and golf.....

Location was South Head Golf course, about 45 mins out of Auckland, NZ, on a beautiful sunny mid-week afternoon (when i would normally be at work). A casual game of golf with a couple of mates, a few beers in the bag to make sure we stayed well hydrated, the course virtually to ourselves (we didn't see another group the whole afternoon) and, for a non-golfer, i was playing like a champ. So all in all a very pleasant afternoon that i didn't think could get much better....

The course is out the back of beyond, surrounded by farms and overlooking Kaipara Harbour. A really nice spot but literally in the middle of nowhere and really quiet and peaceful...

With a few holes to play the idyll was interrupted by the unmistakable opening bars of "Can't Stand it", blasting from a house somewhere in the valley the golf course sits in. This guy/gal had some serious stereo gear because it was LOUD!!! They proceeded to play the whole album, so a great afternoon got even better because i got to finish the walk to the sound of one of my favorite albums. The golf deteriorated thereafter - no reflection on ST as an album i don't think..... more likely the beer

  3. Just got sent this update from oxfam:

Latest news! The one hour world premiere of the 7 Worlds Collide documentary will be showing on TV1 - Monday May 24 at 10.30pm. Don't miss this unique opportunity to see the artists in action behind the scenes.

Stupid NZ TV hogging all the good stuff... never thought I would say that.

Yep, NZ TV and "good stuff" are usually mutually exclusive, however....

If anyone is interested in seeing this doco I'd suggest trying the on-demand section of the TVNZ website (www.tvnz.co.nz), as they seem to make most of their programming available to view there after it has screened (though not sure whether this is available outside NZ or not).

If the doco isn't there you can always check out some of our "quaint" local shows (and you thought the Flight of the Conchords guys were kidding didn't you!)

  4. I figured the other two were I Got You (At The End of The Century) - with the end left off.

I Got You (At The End of The Century)Wilcobase listing.

Yeah, that's what i thought at first - but noticed that both times that it was listed as just "I Got You" it showed as a cover in the set breakdown... Anyway...after hearing Neil, Jeff and assorted band members blast through it at the 7WC show maybe it will show up occassionally as an encore "party piece" at future shows?

As mentioned by plenty of posters already, the 7WC shows were great. The Wilco boys seemed to be having huge fun playing their own and other artists songs. Their extended (in the context of the rest of the show) sets were really well received by the crowd - which was great considering they were the "new boys" in the 7WC family and alot of the crowd wouldn't have been that familiar with Wilco (poor deprived things...). I think they won over planty of new fans - and Mr Tweedy was in good form with the banter. I'm sure having local hero Mr Finn as a temporary band member on most songs and repeatedly declaring his fan-dom helped a bit too. Pat Sansone must have been close to getting the "MVP" award as he seemed to spend more time on stage than anyone on various keys, guitar and bass I think on one song too.
