  1. So, I bought high violet and like it a lot.

Some of the songs make me think "this is the record that coldplay

wishes they would have made instead of x&y".

That's not a slam at all, just a reaction.

I want to try another one. What do you all recommend to get next,

boxer or alligator? Or something else?

i thought this was kind of a ridiculous statement until i thought about it. that's crazy, i can definitely hear chris martin singing these songs from high violet. of course coldplay would never be able to pull something like that off which is why they have x&y and not high violet.

i just saw these guys at the e factory in philly saturday night. they were great, as were the antlers who opened up. matt jumped into the crowd in the middle of the show, walked to the back of the place, back to the middle, and was rocking out to abel with a roudy bunch in the middle of the floor by the end of the song. it was pretty nuts. later in the show he climbed up the balcony and sang from the bar. these guys definitely do their best to make their shows an experience, and they succeed. i'll definitely see them again if the oppurtunity arrises.

  2. I got the impression from his post that he is doing just that.

yes. you're right. listened to the boxer today and it's all starting to make sense. sometimes you need to hear certain music at the right time or it won't click. i think that was the case for me and the national. i just happened to click with the new one first.

  3. i've never been a national fan. i own all of their albums, never really bothered listening to cherry tree or the first two, but i did give alligator and the boxer a fair shake. i always thought they sounded good, but were kind of boring, repetitive, and well, i just didn't see what was so special about them. i did however like those albums enough to give the new one a shot, and i have to say, it's incredible. i am now a national fan for life. i don't really know what to say about it. i've listened to it straight through about ten times now and it keeps getting better and better. it's gotten to the point where i am finding myself listening to nothing but the national, and i've even started enjoying the older albums more because of the new one. i don't have a favorite song because the whole thing is flawless. maybe it's because i've been extremely depressed for about a month now, i don't know. but yes...A++

  4. nice thread. i hate a lot of shit, so this should be fun and theraputic at the same time...

when someone asks, "what's up?". such a broad question. can't we just say hello, how ya doin and leave it at that?

people i barely know or don't know at all that refer to me as dude, bro, boss, chief, son etc.

people who overuse words like "like"

people who talk about their god

oblivious people at the grocery store who act as if they are the only ones shopping

people who constantly talk about being fucked up, what they do when they're fucked up, how fucked up they were last night, and how fucked up they are while they are getting fucked up.

clothes with large labels on them so you don't forget what brand you are wearing. pre-worn out clothes, like jeans with fake holes, tears and fades. popped collars etc.

people who feel the need to take a picture of everything.

when people ask to take your picture, tell you to smile, wait for you to smile, and then make you hold that smile for about 10 or more seconds until they feel they are ready to press the button.

people you barely know telling you about their kids and showing you pictures

those annoying relatives at family gatherings that you have no relationship with whatsoever asking stupid questions about your life knowing full well that they could care less, and you could care less about talking to them.

door to door soliciting....especially jesus freaks

    i could go on forever...

  5. i think that record's the best she's ever done.

i think she was referring to jakob dylan's last album....but i agree, middle cyclone may have been her best, if that's what you are talking about.

  6. I was there an it was unbelievable.

I just remember standing there in the pouring rain, freezing, and staring on in amazement. A life defining set for me.

During "Librarian" when Jim sang "take off those glasses and let down your hair for me," the girl standing in front of me turned around and said "Man, that's just how it is man, cause like, man..." and then fell down. Too bad that didn't make the DVD.

love the story. you painted a perfect picture. and well man...frankly, that is just how it is man. was it just me, or did it start pouring even harder as jim sang "karen of the carpenters, singing in the rain"?

  7. i think the greatest concert known to man-kind needs it's own thread here. just came across the xm soundboard recording. not hard to find, just never looked for a new recording of this in a long time. listening to it is taking me back. what a night!

...they also just released "oh sweet nuthin" from the set as part of a compilation (for global warming i think). sounds great. they really need to do a proper mix and release of this show.

  8. so i've been to electric factory a handful of times. i think the biggest act i've seen there was sonic youth, so wilco might be a slightly different story. anyway, i've always had tickets when i've gone. don't have tickets for wilco yet but i'm going anyway. can anyone with e-factory experience advise me to either buy a 4 pack of tickets now for around 90 a piece, or should i wait it out and expect tickets to be sold at the venue for face value before the show?

  9. I'd guess it's because the show is coming up, and the folks (or whatever profanity you like) on secondary ticket sites are trying to sell as many tickets as possible.

yeah, that' would've been my guess too, but none of the other shows are dropping like this. even the ones that are sooner than scranton. i've been waiting to buy tickets to philly, and they've been around $68 or more for a week or two now... and anyone who's been to the electric factory will tell you that it's a dump.

  10. i just got tickets for the show in scranton last week for $24 on stubsearch.com. they've now dropped to $17 on stubhub. since the show is sold out, this is confusing me. anyone know if there is a logical reason for this? is the venue terrible or what?

i know it's middle of nowhere pennsylvania on a wednesday night, but it is wilco...

  11. if we're talking about rock music, dylan is my all-time favorite artist. pearl jam is my all-time favorite band...however, over the past 5 years or so, these have been my favorites, i love them all in different ways and can't really put a ranking order on them

  13. here's a list i don't think has been done yet. what are your favorite albums from each decade. try keeping it to no more than 2 per decade. i'm starting with the 50's, but feel free to go back even further. i only have a handful of albums from the 40's in my collection, so it would be hard for me to really pick a favorite having only heard a select few.

50's - miles davis - kind of blue, john coltrane - blue train

60's - john coltrane - a love supreme, bob dylan - freewheelin bob dylan

70's - bob dylan - blood on the tracks, todd rundgren - a wizard a true star

80's - sonic youth - daydream nation, the cure - disintegration

    90's - wilco - being there, nas - illmatic

00's - broken social scene - you forgot it in people, neko case - middle cyclone

  14. i saw someone mention kenny g. great choice.

someone also mentioned journy. another great choice. let me just take that a step further and eliminate whichevever band (if they exist) that was responsible for starting the hair music of the 80's. journey, def leppard and whatever other shit bands there were. to this day, it is nearly impossible to go to a sporting event, bar, or any other kind of social gathering that doesn't directly relate to music, without being torchered with journy or bands of the sort. and not only do we have to hear these dreadful songs, but everyone feels the need to sing along when they are played.

  15. i just posted this on a thread in someone else's song, but since it took me a while to figure out how to even post an image, i thought i'd share it over here. this is a picture i took from the brooklyn show. there was no photo shop done to this, and no i did not intend for it to come out like this. truth is, my camera is a piece of shit, and sometimes the distorted images it produces come out great. this was one of those circumstances. anyway, i really love this picture so i thought i'd share it with other wilco fans.

    >

  16. nice pic. i'm no photographer, but here's a picture i took in brooklyn from wilco (the tour). it's not up for an award or anything, but it's probably my favorite concert photo that i've ever taken. the cool thing about it is that i didn't photo shop it. my camera is a piece of shit, and this distorted picture just happened to come out great. in my opinion anyway. almost looks like a painting.

  17.

    Here was the full setlist:

Main Set: Just Breathe (with strings), The End (with strings), The Fixer, Johnny Guitar, Amongst The Waves, Unthought Known, Army Reserve, Do the Evolution

Encore: Lukin (with strings), Red Mosquito w/ Ben Harper, Inside Job, Porch

    there ya go

  18. i've tried with them too. in my opinion they could be incredible. they are tight and the songs are, as is production. however, jim james intentionally sings a little sharp which is really annoying. also some of their lyrics are just bad...'baby in a blender'? finally, jim james just ruins his songs with the goofy singing. i wish he would take himself a bit more seriously. just a bit. It Still Moves is a pretty a good album if a bit long. Golden, I Will Sing You Songs great songs. the first two albums built up to that. instead of sticking with that classic sound/formula, Yim f'ed it all up.

case in point-monsters of folk. how bad is that album?

monsters of folk is a great album if you ask me. jim does have a sense of humor with some of his lyrics, and i can understand some people not really getting it/or writing it off as "goofy". but, as with all great music, some people will appreciate it, some won't. there are still people living amongst us who don't like the beatles.

  19. I exaggerate. But if you're a Neil fan, you at least oughta hear and acknowledge the live Okonokos version of Dondante, one of the best things anyone's done this decade IMO.

if you didn't notice, i started this thread and put mmj at #2 on my list. i believe someone else mentioned mmj in their list as well. my forum name is also "dondante". haha.
