  1. I finally listened to the new single - I was surprised. I haven't heard them be that produced/layered maybe ever, butttttt I'm not sure that's bad. It definitely makes me interested in the new album. I never picked up alvacado.

The single is catchy - I wonder how PJ would react if it was a hit single playing alongside Daughtry and the like (not that it's that bad).

actually the fixer isn't really much of an indication of what the new album is gonna sound like from what i've heard of the tracks. i lot of tunes on it have a bit of an into the wild feel to them, then there are the typical pj rockers and a punk track called supersonic. from what i've learned about backspacer so far, my expectations are extremely high for this one. i think it might be the best since no code.

check this video out, it's a short film about the making of backspacer, it'll definitely make you want to buy the album.

  2. :blink

sorry, Riot Act is far and away my least favorite (and seems to be somewhat of a consensus on The Sky I Scrape) :/

honestly Pearl Jam haven't put out a truly great album since Yield 11 years ago, i've lost most of my faith, but we'll see. not heard anything TOO amazing from this new one yet.

no need to apologize, it's a matter of opinion really. riot act has always caught the most heat from pj fans for being their weakest album. i'm a huge pj fan and i just happen to disagree. i thought self-titled was their weakest release. personally, i think all the albums except the last one were great. i think binural and riot act had great songs that suffered from a weird production style. i don't know much about producing music, so i don't really know what's going on with them, but they both kinda sound like they were recorded in someones garage. eddie's vocals seem like they were intentionally tamed for both of these as well. that said, hearing these songs played live over the years is what made me love them. once you get the connection to the songs, you have to appreciate the albums. they're both growers if you ask me. 1/2 full is one of the best songs you could hear at a pj concert.

  3. scored tix for Halloween Philly show this morning, so we'll be at the Fri & Sat shows :)

i almost guarantee that Bruuuuuuuce will show up for one of them

    also:

30 second preview of Supersonic (the b-side of The Fixer and also on Backspacer)

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Fixer/dp/B002L...3212&sr=8-4

even just from the clip i like it way more than The Fixer. sounds like The Ramones meets The Cars.

not sure what's up with Ed and his "yeah yeah"'s on this record tho

i really hope you're right about bruce that would be awesome. friday and saturday are the two shows i'm going to as well. now all i need to do is score some giants tickets, cause they are coming to whoop up on the birdies the day after halloween.

i'm diggin what i've heard from the new album. it sounds like they're cooking up a little something for everyone. the fixer is probably the weakest from what i've heard, but it's so damn catchy i can't ever seem to get it out of my head. so that just confuses me, anyway, i think backspacer is gonna be something special. personally i was disappointed with the self titled cd, and i think riot act was one of their best. we'll see in about a month.

  4. i'm going to see them in philly tommorrow night. i can't wait, it will be my first sonic youth show. i like the eternal a lot, so i don't mind them playing a lot of those songs, i just hope the set is descent in length. i heard they've been playing for about an hour and a half? i guess that's pretty normal for most concerts, but i've been spoiled by bands that like to play 2 and a half to 3 hour shows.

i wanna hear some pattern recognition........

anyone know who the opener will be?

  5. i would love for the taste of evil urges to be washed out of my mouth as well. that was terrible for mmj standards, although it actually wasn't that bad of an album..........i don't know how you can say they've been going downhill since at dawn though. at dawn is their masterpiece in my opinion as well, but they change it up on every release. i think it still moves and z are just as good for what they were trying to accomplish. evil urges, not so much....

  6. it's been a great decade of music in my opinion, hard to narrow it down, some of my favorites...

drive-by truckers - decoration day, the dirty south

  7. Really great show! Played two full hours with no break, I was blown away! I've never see Jeff that loose before, I mean singing to the camera? I think the best part was Nels and Pat dueling in "Hoodoo Voodoo." New stuff sounded great too.

so they played hoodoo voodoo? that wasn't on any of the sets listed in this thread for the show....did they play anything else we're missing?

  8. i'd love to hear it. i can't promise a well written review as that's not really my thing, but i will definitely give you some feedback at least. what's your bands name? i didn't see your myspace link........can i get a download?

(nevermind, i see the myspace link, i guess i wasn't logged in when i read the post) a download would still be nice though........

  9. i added some side projects and such to give it a proper number of tracks

    1. misunderstood - being there

    2. shot in the arm - summerteeth

    3. shouldn't be ashamed - am

  10. Yep. Unfortunetely they clash with the Decemberists and Elvis Costello, both of which I kinda wanted to see. But i'll probably try to get to Wilco early and get a good spot and stay there to see the boss. This is my first bonnaroo (or any music festival), can any veterans tell me abouts how early i'd have to get to a show to get a spot up close?

not worth getting up close in my opinion. if your solo i would just try and move your way up as close as you can before the show. in order to get a nice spot you'll have to hang out there all day and claim an area. you'll miss a lot of good music, not to mention getting drinks/going to the bathroom will be a major pain. your best bet is to just take what you can and not sacrifice any other music for a good wilco spot. just go to a show on the tour if you want to see them up close.

  11. Anyone here check out that Showbox DVD? I just ran into it today, I didn't even know it existed! Is it as good as their Italian tour DVD, the name escapes me...

way better than the picture in a frame dvd. one of my favorites. it's got a nice set list and it's an actual show, which i prefer. the video quality isn't that good, but the sound is great. personally i think it's on par with live at the garden, although i'm a big riot act fan which has a lot of songs on this set. i would strongly recommend it.

  12. It's funny, because DMB isn't really a "jam band" either. There is only one good jam band right now and that is Phish. And The Grateful Dead before them.

although wilco IS much closer to Hootie than DMB.

sorry but dmb is most definitely a jam band. no doubt about that.

  13. i really disliked that article. the guy seems to be having an identity crisis. i love wilco and really don't care for dave matthews. not because i don't think dmb is talented, they are, but because they write some 'shoddy songs'(haha), and yeah, they do 20 minute versions of multiple songs at shows. that's not fun, it's boring. wilco does not do that, wilco jams out, but is not a jam band.

i admit, one of the things that turns me off about dmb is the fans, but that wouldn't keep me from going to the shows if they were worth seeing 50 million times. they just aren't. this guy should stop stereo-typing people. just because people like good music doesn't mean they are trying to fit into a crowd and analyze everything. i think the author just assumes that everyone is like him.....insecure and constantly looking for a scene to fit in to. he seems to embody everything i hate about the 'hipster scene'.

just my opinion, maybe i misinterpreted the article.

and how can this guy assume that no one is having fun at these shows he speaks of. i go to a lot of concerts and i always see people having fun, no matter who the artist is that's playing.

  14. can someone please pm me a link to a site where i can download the album in mp3 files. i've been looking for it all day, and the only files i could get wouldn't play on my computer. i've already pre-ordered it, so no need to feel guilty, but listening to a stream over the internet is just a very enjoyable tease. now that i've heard it, it's gonna kill me not having it on a disc. no need to jump on my case for making such an outrageous request either, it is very clear that most of you already have this downloaded. thanks in advance........

while we're on the subject, i'll throw in my two cents.....the new tunes are great. 'i'll fight' was the standout for me after the first go-round, but i enjoyed the whole thing for the most part. that's all i got for now.

someone mentioned it's got a neil finn sound. i concur.

  15. In The Aeroplane Over The Sea scares me. i own a copy and it is good, but i rarely listen to it. it just gives me the creeps.

    -justin

that's the exact same reaction i had. i have it too, and it gave me the creeps when i heard it. objectively i'd have to say the music is descent, but personally i can't stand it. i've only gave it a listen two or three times, and still haven't managed to sit through the whole thing in one sitting. maybe one day it will grab me, but as of now my opinion is that it is way overhyped, and i have no idea why.

  16. I'm surprised that Fripp and Belew have only been mentioned once or twice, and the same with Zappa and Thurston Moore. And of course, Nels is amazing. It it werent for Nels I dont think my husband would be a Wilco fan.

I've looked thru this thread -- no one has mentioned Clapton. I do not care for Clapton. So where did the "Clapton is God" thing start?

i can't believe i forgot about thurston moore. he's one of my favorites.

  17. If you think that was bad, you should've seen my CD collection 2-1/2 years before that. Mercifully, that CD collection was stolen from me. I began rebuilding with different music - some of the stuff that you said sucked so bad were actually stepping stones from the even crappier stuff to Wilco to what I like today. Most people don't start off with impeccable taste. The right crappy music though can serve as a stepping stone to something better or more meaningful.

right on. if anyone tries to act like they had great taste in music straight from the womb, they are full of shit. 99% of kids listen to terrible music. i'm 25 and i'd say that my my musical taste as it is now wasn't fully shaped until about 4 or 5 years ago. it was a gradual transition from mc hammer to pearl jam who is still my favorite band. everyone has music in their collection from when they were younger that they'd almost be embarrassed to admit they own, unless like you, they had that collection stolen.

  18. When I first found pitchfork I loved them...I saw their top 100 albums of the 90s and was like "OMG, a top 100 with no Pearl Jam, Metallica, and Nine Inch Nails? this site rocks!!!" I liked that they were willing to knock a band regardless of who they are.

I don't think bands should automatically get gold stars just because "Hey we liked their last album." or "They did something really important 5 years ago." That being said, I begin noticing that they were writing off bands for really arbitrary reasons, and praising bands for equally arbitrary reasons.

So while I like pitchfork in theory, in practice, pitchfork doesn't work. Sort of like Marxist political theory.

i understand what you are saying, however, a top 100 albums of the 90's list with no mention of pearl jam is just wrong.

  19. What about top 100 bands?

    Top 100 songs?

top 100 bands would be a cool idea, although, personally i don't think i like that many artists to the extent that i'd want to mention them on a favorites list. top 20 would probably work better. i guess we could create a top 100 out of our top 20's like was done for the albums. that's probably what you meant anyway.

100 songs wouldn't work for me, there are too many great songs to cram it into a list. that would take me like 10 years to figure out and by then it would be all wrong. a lot of songs also work better in the context of an album, and wouldn't hold up as well on their own. to use a wilco song as an example, 'reservations' comes to mind. great song and great as a closer for the album, but have you ever tried to throw that on a mix tape? doesn't work out too well....

  20. TWO Blind Melon records? Please.

wow! sorry you're not a fan. i was under the impression that we could create our own top 20 to be voted onto a list. didn't know it had to have your stamp of approval. like someone else mentioned, maybe i'm a little younger than you. i'm 25 and i grew up listening to blind melon. like i said though, that list wasn't very well thought out. i left a lot of stuff out and added some stuff just to fill up a top 100, it was just made up on a whim. however, let me correct you, i actually put 3 blind melon records on there, not 2. furthermore, if i could re-create my top 100, it would probably look a lot different, but all 3 blind melon albums would remain present. blind melon is one of the most underrated bands of the past 20 years in my opinion, sorry you don't get it.
