  1. Anyone listened to the Pernice Brothers lately? That was the buzz when I got here a few years back. They seem to have dropped off the map.

Joe Pernice just released a new album a few weeks ago. ;)

The problem with The Pernice Brothers (IMHO) is that Joe Pernice has been making the same album over and over for 10 years now. I loved Overcome By Happiness - it was like a breath of fresh air and totally different. But every Pernice album sounds exactly the same. It's hard to maintain excitement over someone who keeps doing the same thing over and over.

I agree with you that it takes many years to see who will stand the test of time and who will be influential on new artists.

I haven't heard St Vincent, but I do know Bon Iver's For Emma Forever Ago album. I listened to it nonstop for about a week and really liked it at the time, but haven't gone back to it.

I can't say I've ever "wanted" to like an album. I'm always curious to hear new stuff, and if lots of people are talking about it, perhaps I'm even more curious, but I don't necessarily go into it "wanting" to like it.

And if I look back through my record/tape/CD collection, there have ALWAYS been buzz bands who disappear off the map. For every wonderful, classic album I have, I probably have two others that, while still wonderful, are by artists who have long since dropped off the map. I don't think this phenomenon is anything new. What is new is the overload of exposure to music that wasn't really possible years ago.

  2. I surf the net and read about bands when I could be learning something that betters my life. I'm 38 years old and I feel like I've never really grown up. My friends and relatives talk about grown up stuff and I'm still obsessed with music.

I surf the net and read about bands and I feel this does better my life.

I'm 48 years old and I feel like I've grown up (i.e. am responsible and self-sufficient), but not old because of my passion for music.

My friends and relatives talk about "grown up stuff" and it bores me to tears. I'm still obsessed with music, and it is the one great passion of my life. The thing I can always to turn to. It's never been my job, but it has always been my passion.

It makes me sad to read that you actively want to give a passion like that up.

  3. In response to Rider's first post in this thread, there have been several times in my life when I've thought that listening to music was 'over' for me, at least to the extent that new music would give me the thrill I was looking for. But this has always turned out to be a temporary thing, and something always comes along that knocks my socks off just as much as anything ever did. Sometimes it has been a whole year that I've felt 'over' music. It always comes back. Don't try to force it. :)

And I agree that trying to consume vast amounts of music in a short amount of time can lead to musical overload and overkill without anything really sinking in. I used to try to stay up on everything new and also all the artists that I love. I realized I can't do it. There's just too much music out there. So I made a conscious decision to just listen to whatever I felt like listening to at any given moment. And if that means listening to one album exclusively for an entire month or more, so be it. If I miss stuff, oh well, you can always go back and discover stuff you missed when it was first released - I've done this many times!

I'm currently on a bit of an exploration binge, listening to the iPod in shuffle mode (and I agree with those who say that can lead to being more concerned about what's coming next rather than enjoying what's playing right now)....but this too shall pass and I'm sure I'll eventually find an album or artist to focus on for months to the virtual exclusion of all others.

Don't worry about it. If you've been a music fiend since your youth, it won't go away. I'm pushing 50 and it hasn't gone away...well, as I said above, it has, temporarily, but it always, always comes back. I'm not worried. :)

  4. I tend to hate the Summerstage venue even under the best of conditions, so I'm glad I didn't go. I really like M. Ward, and was interested in Floored By Four, but to a lesser extent. I was thinking to go and just hang out outside the venue itself and listen...I can never, ever see the stage in that venue. Ever. It just gets so packed, and I'm only 5'3", and it's hopeless for me to see anything there. The sound problem with M. Ward seems to have made it a good decision not to go just to hang out outside and not be able to hear anything. Glad I skipped it....sounds like everything I hate about Summerstage was out in full force, M. Ward sound problems doesn't sound too good, and I'm guessing it was packed, being free.

I read about the show on someone's blog earlier today, and the writer referred to M. Ward as 'an indie-pop songwriter'. Eh? Not how I would describe him at all. I'm tending to think exo's post was pretty accurate about the hipsters.

    Thanks for the reviews. :)

  5. There is now a London gig associated with this project, which includes two Wilco members as participants:

    From Myspace:

7 Worlds Collide comes to London for special one-off gig

Neil Finn is bringing the 7 Worlds Collide project to London for a very special one off show at Dingwalls in Camden.

The exclusive and intimate show will take place on August 11th, and will feature Neil Finn, Ed O'Brien and Phil Selway of Radiohead and Glenn Kotche and John Stirratt of Wilco. Together they will be premiering tracks from the forthcoming album The Sun Came Out.

Tickets go on sale Monday 3rd August at 9am and cost £25. Get them from Live Nation online, or by calling 0844 576 5483.

  6. really bummed I can't go see them on Sunday night here now :/

Yeah, they're playing here next week, but it's sold out. Rats. Too bad I only discovered this band a couple of days ago. I would have loved to go to this show.

someone asked me to describe it and i said Devendra Banhart fronting the Polyphonic Spree, lol

I keep seeing the name Devendra Banhart in descriptions of this band. I have heard of Devendra Banhart, but have never heard any of his music. Somehow I was under the impression that Devendra Banhart was a lot more "out there" (for lack of a better term) than Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

Glad to know that some of you have heard of them and like them!

  7. I'm taking a big plunge as a newbie by starting a new topic. ;)

Has anyone here heard of this band? I stumbled upon them a few days ago and have become addicted to their Up From Below album. If it's any help, when I searched for the album on amazon, it said that people who bought this also bought W(TA). ;)

I am completely addicted to this...but have spent the past 2 days trying to categorize it. I can't. There is no Edward Sharpe. The lead singer's name is Alex something or other, and there is even one song on here where one of the other (female) band members refers to him as Alexander in the middle of the song!

How can I categorize this album? I'm not sure....I love the songs, the sound, the singer's voice. If I had to try to place this in a style category, I'd say 60's pop psychedelia, mixed with hillbilly country, mixed with very modern indie rock. I'm not sure how these disparate elements combine together to actually work, but they do. I love this album. :)

  8. There is currently a live Feelies recording at Dime a Dozen from their performance at the Whitney Museum in NYC last month. I encourage anyone who's at all into the Feelies to check this recording out. It may be the best Feelies recording I've ever heard.

  9. I am new also - this is only my second post! But I've been a lurker for a long time and also feel the personality of the board has changed somewhat since I first started reading it.

I am a big Wilco fan....but not a huge Wilco fan.

What originally drew me to this board (aside from Wilco ;) ) was the "Someone Else's Song" board....which does seem to have decreased traffic/not the same kind of conversation. I dunno....is it okay if I like to talk about other music more than I like to talk about Wilco? (Not wanting to step on any toes!) For what it's worth, I first listened to W(TA) when it leaked...instantly loved it and thought it was my second fave Wilco album after Summerteeth....now I'm not so sure....it doesn't seem to be aging well with me - in the way that while I really like it, I don't find the individual songs memorable enough to register in my brain as individual songs. There is no Via Chicago. There is no Shot in the Arm. There is no Candyfloss!

(I do own all Wilco albums except A.M.)
