The more I listen, the more this is sounding like an absolutely fantastic record. I'm not sure it's up there with the trifecta of BT, ST, YHF, but it just might be. These are really great songs.

this record's grabbing much faster than most wilco records, which i can't say if that's good or bad. one wing into bull black nova is shhhhweeeeeeet.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band is the opening act from 7/8 thru 7/19.

Pitchfork lost its way about 2-3 years ago. They used to break outstanding and important acts such as The Wrens, Arcade Fire, Damien Jurado and countless others. Now it's the home of the hipster crap of the day. Whenever I see a 9.2 for a band named Wavves, Beach House or some other band with a watered down and bland sound, I just laugh. They clearly must have changed editors or key contributors or something. Or they figured they could make more ad $$ by focusing on F**k Buttons, Abe Vigoda and other shite bands.

But I am excited for the new record. And boy that Ashes DVD may be the best music DVD in a long, long time.

Wow, you had dreadful taste prior to discovering Wilco. I mean, REALLY dreadful.

Wilco is my favorite band.

I read Pitchfork every day.

 

My entry point for Wilco was YHF. I came to it thru Rolling Stone. At that time, my favorite acts included the Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Everclear. When YHF came out I had only just begun venturing outside of modern rock radio to listen to acts like Ryan Adams/Whiskeytown, the White Stripes and the Strokes. YHF was some respects an epiphany that changed the way I approach and listen to music - to the extent that I would say that YHF is one of the things that eventually led me to become a Pitchfork reader.

 

I like Pitchfork because unlike most sources for reviews they seem to be willing to utilize the full breadth and depth of their rating scale. It drives me nuts that a lot of reviewers will utilize a scale from 0-100 and never give an album anything below a 65.

 

That said, their constant and liveblogging of concerts and festivals is an annoying scenester indulgence.
