  1. One of the better shows i've seen in a while, got there pretty late so i was back by the soundboard/lightboard, but got a good look at the setlist (tried not to cheat before the end of the show but it was hard to resist), everything was played as listed.

Room sounded great, and the band was really on. Only exception being Nels flubbing the solo at the end of Hummingbird very noticeably, which caused Jeff to remark "Well, you'll never hear it exactly like that again. Favorite moment was the little bit of "banter" between Nels and Jeff in the middle of Kingpin, where Jeff would ask Nels a question and answer with his guitar. 4 songs i've never seen Wilco play before (Promising, HTFL, Country Disappeared, Key to my Heart), so that's always good. Also haven't gotten to hear enough of At Least that's what you've said, only the 3rd time i can remember seeing it in the 20 or so shows i've seen.

Very excited for nights 2 and 3! Hoping the band finally decides to play Spiders the way it was meant to be heard, 12 minutes long with electric guitars

  2. I like it after a full listen through. It's a bit long, and as with basically every double album ever, there are parts where the fat could have been trimmed.

However I must say "Down from above" is spectacular. I've probably listened 10 times already. I just love the way the guitars interplay, almost in unison, but never quite there, swirling around each other. Jeff has developed a great way of playing in a way that's purposefully a little off. Reminds me of Malkmus sometimes.

And I'm going to second the AGIB comparison. I think it's part production similarities, and part that Jeff is doing all the lead guitar work. It ends up sounding sort of like AGIB or a loose fur record more than a couple of times.

  3. I got wind of this a little too late, but was able to watch the second half through an open window. Was a real treat to be able to see him in such a super intimate setting (even though i wasn't technically in there)

  4. I'm about ready to pull the trigger on NFF... I wish they'd release a few of the artists!

I went to Newport for the first time last year, totally worth it. Though Mountain Jam is always fun as well, and the lineup looks pretty stellar. Tweedy, Umphrey's, Jonathan Wilson, Lucius, Trampled by Turtles, Moon Taxi...

  5. This year was my first at the fort, and i had a great weekend! weather was great (we stayed inside on friday when it rained though), and the music was spectacular.

Short of Dylan plugging in (and Jim James' flying V on a stick), the end of Father John Misty's set might have been one of the more Rock and Roll things to ever happen at Newport. Check out the video, especially the last 2 minutes

  6. Stuck it out till just before 2 am and nothing happened. MMJ's drummer Patrick did come in with a few folks, and they had a private hang in the music room (and were still in there when I split), but I got the sense it was more of a "get a look at the place" kind of thing.

    So there you go...debunked. Hopefully.

Ah well, i guess the rumors were just rumors. Sorry to instill false hope :(. That wilco set still looked incredible though w/ 2 Mott The Hoople songs, wish i could've been there, and also the weight at the end of dylan's set

  7. I parked up by Maxwell's, so I figured I'd swing by for one last drink. Then I saw your post. Anyway I'm still here and there's no sign of any Americanarama-related folks yet. Not to say something won't happen, but I'll wait it out for a bit.

Don't take my word as bible, it could just be pure speculation. But I've been hearing whispers about it for a few weeks now

  8. Lucius! Love those ladies. Too bad they didn't do Waterloo; don't know if the Dylan crowd could've handled that... :dancing

What'd they do on Nothing'sever? Handclaps, I hope. :thumbup

No handclaps, they did the "aaah" in the verse, and "nothinsever" background vocals in the chorus. Love the colab, they sounded great on Waterloo sunset again, but they didn't really do much on nohtin'sever.

Show was great last night. Can't say i'm a huge fan of dylan live, but MMJ and Wilco both put great sets together. My only real complaint is one that i've had every show i've seen wilco for the last few months (bonnaroo, solid sound). Not sure if they have a new sound guy, but John's bass is super inaudible in the mix, couldn't even hear him on that prominent "Handshake Drugs" bassline, which is upsetting. Otherwise a great set though, loved Radio Cure, loved opening the set with Was i in your dreams as well!

  9. I think part of the problem has been bad marketing. It's weird that Wilco and MMJ sell out these venues they're playing when they headline, i honestly think if they dropped dylan and billed it as a co-headline, these shows would be selling better. A lot of Jacket/Wilco fans just don't want to shell out money to see Dylan, because he has a reputation of having a less-than-stellar live show. Whether that perception is true or not doesn't matter, a lot of the younger fans won't come out to this unfortunately.

  10. The Feelies.

    or The Bongos.

Feelies would be a good one, i saw them a few times there over the years. They just did a run there a week or two ago, but unfortunately i couldn't make it. Might try to make the last night block party on the 31st.

Would be REALLY cool if Wilco did something while they're in hoboken next week! (except i wouldn't be able to go since i'm in newport)

  11. Tonight, Titus Andronicus, probably my last show ever at Maxwell's before it shuts it's doors at the end of the month. Short of Yo La Tengo, The Replacements, or Springsteen, i can't think of a more appropriate show to say goodbye with.

  12. Are there any other shows on this leg that are 100% GA?

I know the Hoboken show is 100% Standing room GA, Mumford and Dawes did a show there last summer. Not sure if i'm making it out to that one though, might be at Newport. If i did go though, i'd probably show up around doors, maybe a little later. Im banking on the fact that not too many people want to be there for the whole 5 hours of music.

In other news, do we know if it goes Wilco -> Jacket -> Dylan, or Jacket -> Wilco -> Dylan?

  13. As far as I know, Neko is strongly against her shows being recorded and/or shared anywhere on the internet.  I guess a stream is a different thing, or maybe she has changed her mind. I won't be messing with any of her shows though.

I definitely saw a Wilco crew guy go up to a taper right before Neko's set started and ask him to lower his rig, so i think her policy must still stand on that one.

  14. YLT started way too slow....after i got some shots up front I was stymied in finding where my wife was standing in the crowd (did anyone else have problems w/ the wifi and phone connection in general?), so i bailed after they played 3 or 4 snoozers in a row. went to get some food and hung out at the tables, until i heard "Blue Line Swinger" sailing across the air and made my way back to their set. nice way to end it.

i loved loved loved the Border Music set (even though i couldn't get my interview w/ Ribot squared away). that was a really strong highpoint of the entire weekend, not just Sunday.

The YLT set didn't start slow, but definitely hit a major slow wall after "Autumn Sweater", or maybe the song after that. Some of those songs, like "The Point of It" were nice songs i enjoy, but they strung too many slow ones in a row. The end was killer though.

  15. did anyone see this guy on stage w/ Mulcahy?

I saw him walking around friday and saturday, but i wasn't 100% sure it was him, though the thought definitely more than crossed my mind. It's cool that he was just walking around checking out the music, but i missed his Mulcahy appearance unfortunately.
