Actually this is not exactly true either, which is why pegging Israel is some sort of society that has no diversity is totally inaccurate. Ultra-orthodox Jews do not have to serve in the military.
The ONLY country in the world that has a manditory (military) draft? I will leave it to someone else to debunk this.

lThanks for debunking this statement..I didn't read your post before I answered.
LouieB
Unique though for drafting men and women - all it's citizens.
-
It is a very diverse and relatively free society. That does not mean that their government is any different than OUR government, which also supports useless war and unjust policies.
Maybe this has no bearing on how different the Israeli government is from the American one, or their attitudes on war, but Israel is the only country in the world that has a mandatory military draft on all its citizens.
-
Where dissent on Israel is constantly suppressed, sadly, is in the United States. AIPAC has browbeaten the mainstream media and the politicians into absolute compliance with their agenda.
Helen Thomas.

There are movements calling for boycotts of the US too, from the UK and Canada- you can google it. However, I find this comparison flawed because while there are powerful voices of dissention (ie hotly debated in major media outlets) in the US about the actions of the US government, there doesn't seem to be much from within Israel about the blockade in Gaza or their treatment of the Palestinians in the West Bank.
Israel might be a democracy but I am not sure how diverse or free their media is.
In fact, it can be difficult even in the US to be vocally critical of Zionism without being blacklisted either professionally, poliically or socially. I find this taboo especially strange as a new American. It feels to me like a weird new McCarthyism even among liberals.
I applaud the Pixies for making a silent protest.

Ok. I can't help it. I want to add my pseudo-scientific tuppence to this discussion.
Music/dance has been a part of human mating rituals, cross-culturally, ever since there was music. There must be some physiological basis for this. If your and your partner move to the same groove, maybe that points to some biological compatibility for producing viable and competitive offspring.
This is my theory. Albeit unproven, it has nonetheless compelled my hubs to enjoy Wilco. If he is faking it, he's doing a great job, and I will not look a gift horse in the mouth.
Though, since this is my fourth post to this thread, I feel like I am fulling capable of flogging a dead one.
-
Not sure if Passenger Side counts. Technically, it's a driving song rather than a song about a car.
Next weeks thread " Songs about Walt Whitman's siblings kids"
That WOULD be a fun one!
It sorta reminds me of the legendary VC thread: "Rank the Wilco Albums (in Chronological Order)". Still being discussed, three years hence...
-
Agreed on both counts, but regarding the second one, you must draw the line somewhere, and surely the Pixies (admittedly small) act is better than Rod Stewart's or Elton John's lack of interest- which amounts to condoning these war crimes.
And -- Elton John just sang at Rush Limbaugh's wedding (his fourth marriage).

Lol. Um, I was speaking from memory and imagination.

Pixies call off Israel concert after Gaza raid
(AP)
JERUSALEM — The U.S. rock band Pixies has canceled a concert in Tel Aviv this week in the wake of Israel's deadly raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla.
The group's Tel Aviv promoter, Shuki Weiss, relayed a statement from the band announcing the cancellation "with great regret."
The band did not specify why it was pulling out of the gig, but organizers say the decision was related to last week's naval raid, which killed nine pro-Palestinian activists.
Various artists have recently come under heavy pressure from activists to boycott Israel because of its treatment of the Palestinians. Elvis Costello recently canceled a planned concert to protest Israeli policies.
Others, such as Elton John and Rod Stewart, are still planning to play Israel this summer.

My friend, who is a chef, was at the White House the last few days with a group of several other Chicago-based chefs. Is this what he was cooking for?!?!
I think your friend was invited by the First Lady, who has been conferring with top chefs from around the nation, to help schools serve up better food for kids, to fight obesity.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100604/ap_on_he_me/us_white_house_top_chefs
I think it is a shame and disgraceful to bash ANY President at the White House.
I think it is okay for a citizen from a democratic country to publically criticize their own leader, past or present, when they are a guest of that government; but it is very rude and undiplomatic to be criticizing someone else's government when you are an invited guest of that government. Equally it would be rude for an American celebrity, say, invited by the Queen, to be criticizing the British government past or present while on an official visit. (Except maybe in a joke about the Revolutionary War, when Britain and the US shared the same government.)
I am a big critic of G. Bush, but Paul McCartney was out of line.

(From his book All-American Poem, 2008)
V
The skinny girl walking arm-in-arm
with her little sister
is wearing a shirt that says
TALK NERDY TO ME
and I want to,
I want to put my bag of groceries down
beside the fire hydrant
and whisper something in her ear
about long division.
I want to stand behind her and run
a single finger down her spine
while she tells me about all her correlatives.
Maybe she'll moan a little
when I tell her that x equals negative-b
plus or minus the square root
of b-squared minus 4( a )( c ) all over
2a. I have my hopes.
I could show her my comic books
and Play Station. We could pull out
my old D&D cards
and sit in the basement with a candle lit.
I know enough about Dr. Who
and the Star Fleet Enterprise
to get her shirt off, to unbutton her jeans.
We could work out String Theory
all over her bedroom.
We could bend space together.
But maybe that's not what she's asking.
The world's been talking dirty
ever since she's had the ears to listen.
It's been talking sleazy to all of us
and there's nothing about the hydrogen bomb
that makes me want to wear a cock ring
or do it in the kitchen while a pot of water boils.
Maybe, with her shoulders slouched
the way they are and her long hair
covering so much of her face,
she's asking, simply, to be considered
something more than a wild night, a tight
curl of pubic hair, the pink,
complicated, structures of nipples.
Maybe she wants to be measured beyond
the teaspoon shadow of the anus
and the sweet mollusk of the tongue,
beyond the equation of limbs and seen
as a complete absolute.
And maybe this is not a giant leap
into the science of compassion, but it's something.
So when I pass her
I do exactly what she has asked of me,
I raise my right hand and make a V
the way Vulcans do when they wish someone well,
hoping she gets what she wants, even
if it has to be in a galaxy far away.

Laurie Anderson performs Opera House dog concert
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100605/ap_on_en_mu/as_australia_music_for_dogs
By KRISTEN GELINEAU, Associated Press Writer
SYDNEY – Some in the audience howled with glee, others stood on trembling legs and a few drooled in delight as famed performance artist Laurie Anderson debuted her original "Music for Dogs" composition outside the Sydney Opera House on Saturday.
Hundreds of dogs and their owners bounced around as Anderson entertained them with 20 minutes of thumping beats, whale calls, whistles and a few high-pitched electronic sounds imperceptible to human ears.
"Let's hear it from the medium dogs!" Anderson called out from the stage, as a few dogs yipped in return. "You can do better than that — come on mediums! Whoo! WHOOOOOO!"
The performance was part of the city's Vivid art and music festival, which is being co-curated by Anderson and her husband, rock legend Lou Reed.
Anderson — who often plays music for her rat terrier Lollabelle — said the idea originated during a chat with cellist Yo-Yo Ma while the two were waiting backstage at a graduation ceremony.
"We thought, 'Wouldn't it be great if you're playing a concert and you look out and everyone's a dog?'" Anderson said. "So I thought if I ever get a chance to do that, I'm gonna do it. And today was it. So this is like a highlight of my life."
The music had varying effects on the pooches, with a series of high-pitched whale sounds working several into a frenzy. Many wagged their tails and barked in apparent encouragement, while others stared at the stage with glazed eyes.
"Yo!" Anderson shouted from behind her keyboard. "Beautiful work, dogs!"
Not all of the pups were thrilled. Oliver, a Jack Russell terrier who tends to have issues with high-pitched noises, folded his ears back and exploded into a barrage of frantic barks as he lunged toward the stage, dragging owner Jacqui Bonner along with him.
Others appeared entranced. April Robinson giggled as her small dog Spot swiveled his head toward the stage, ears perked high.
"He loves it!" she squealed while Spot stared wide-eyed at Anderson.
The concert was originally billed as a performance for dogs' ears only, and was going to be largely limited to electronic noises played at a frequency too high for human ears. But Anderson changed things up when she decided she wanted people to have some fun, too.
"We didn't want to do something that humans couldn't hear," she said. "We brought the octaves down into our hearing range so we could all have the experience."
Anderson, who turned 63 Saturday, said the crowd was one of the best-behaved she's ever played for, and considered the whole event a howling success.
"That was the most amazing concert I've ever, ever gotten to give!" she said with a grin. "It's really a dream."

We could be more scientific if you'd like.
That would likely be a very short thread.

The tacky puns are starting to remind me of being in 7th grade.
It seemed like fun at the time, but I was 13.

Maybe this ought to be posted to this Misheard Lyrics thread. Lol.
By the end of the night, I was wiped out
Girls capsized, members shouting
Deeper down
I felt the insult of a kiss
Deeper still than mortals go
Further in than porn stars row
Moving slow
My energies persist
In beyond the endoscope's pry
Up around the tallest Dutch girl thigh
I realized
This mastery is mine
Now we're on the bedroom floor
A part of who we are we don’t explore
I adore
The meaninglessness of the this
We can’t express
By the end of the night, I was wiped out
Girls capsized, members shouting
Deeper down
I felt the comfort of a kiss

Whoa! Y'all need to slow down. The best wilco song for lovemaking has to be "more like the moon" -- works best for the middle of the night. I would recommend "company in my back" for a lazy weekend morning; and "wishful thinking" is helpful on a warm sunny afternoon with the windows open.
-
In Misunderstood, I used to think it was "reflecting on your O.C.D." because that totally made sense to me at the time... Returning to your hometown and lighting up a cigarette while thinking about being obsessive-compulsive.
-
I think that concept was just for the shows billed "An Evening With Wilco," which is not how these dates are promoted...
The Stockholm show was billed thus, but was not in the three hour format. I think it may have been only for the US shows. :-(
-
In case anyone is keeping track, there was no ash cloud and we made it from Dublin to lovely Stockholm just fine. It rained on the day of the show but the rest of the weekend was beautiful.
I don't do setlists so hope someone else will post that to After the Show. There was very little banter, Jeff said because they were short on time. My friend and I both thought the guys seemed a little quiet compared to the last time I saw them in Dublin, though it was still a great show.
Afterward they signed autographs for us and photos. So happy! Love Wilco!

OMG! Great setlist! Were there many people there? I am curious about their Finnish following. So excited for Sunday. Thanks mrk.
Hope you will post info about this show and tomorrow's show to the "After the Show" forum because this is IMPORTANT information and will be lost in this thread.

P.S. I requested "Ashes" for the show, just to be ironic, or is it paradoxical? I've been confused about irony and paradox ever since that darn Alanis Morissette song.

in my post I questioned the diversity of viewpoints that seem to be lacking coming out of Israel. But I am open to the possibility that the Western media fails to represent non mainstream view points that exist in Israel.
I feel like I am being misquoted and my words twisted when you imply that I think it is a homogenous society.
