  1. I hear you. Thanks for taking time to explain.

I guess since Wilco has not come out to give a reason why, we can't know what they think, but what you've written makes perfect sense.

I've never posted on youtube, but it seems the ones who do post videos (upper limit of 10 minutes), don't do it for financial gain. And could it have bearing on the earnings of musicians when I wouldn't pay money to look at it?

It is different from filming in a movie theatre because you are actually copying someone else's work in the same medium, frame by frame, and potentially spoiling a narrative arc.

This sort of video scrapbooking ("on an imperfect medium" to quote Tweedy in the Youtube Preferred B posted), defines the times we live in now, and may well become cultural artifacts in the future.

I come from a culture where artistic expression has, for centuries, been about referencing those who came before rather than about originality. But having been educated in the West, I understand the Western concept of "copyright" because it rewards innovation. Even when ideas come from other ideas -- in collage, as pastische, through sampling, or what-have-you -- these sometimes resonate in a different way, and are equally creative.

I did hear about the drunk woman in Memphis, but all tapers are not so disrespectful. I enjoy (without guilt!) some of the videos that are out there. It is interesting how people editorialize what they tape, and choose to post: things they think are significant or impressive to their friends, the semiotics of identity, etc.

I am a late-blooming American (naturalized when I was 33), so think it is all very very interesting in an "Americana" sort of way.

I feel bad that I like something that Wilco doesn't allow.

So maybe really, I am looking for absolution rather than explanation.

  2. I'm a huge Bad Plus fan. I am in love with their originals, this cover is pretty solid though. I saw them live with the girl, it came across better in that setting.

Wonder if she was prettier, like Nora Jones, whether this cover would be better received.

  3. It is my opinion that if someone feels the need to document their feelings and reaction to a wilco performance, they should create a new piece of work representing that feeling--that is art. Otherwise it is theft.

Hmmm... I think a lot of people who make ethnographic films that attempt to document live performance in different cultures would argue this point.

I also appreciate the argument that if there are a surplus of videos and bootlegs out there, it lessens the likelihood that some people will actually invest in the price of a ticket to attend.

Really? People would watch these youtube posts instead of going to live shows? Every time I watch one of these badly filmed concert snippets, it only stokes my Live-Wilco craving. This year has been absolutely fanatical for me, going to six Wilco shows around Europe. Spending way too much of our recession money.

I bet the same people who look these things up to watch them are the ones spend the most on concert tickets. The same way that people who illegally download spend the most on music. (See article in The Independent here.)

If you watch enough of these, you get a sense of the lexicon. They are what they are. These are the times we live in. Ipod Cyborgs inhabit the earth; this is how they perceive reality. (If a tree falls in the forest and it isn't on Twitter, did it really happen?) On some level, maybe we need to flow with the Tao.

Some arguments that convince me so far are: 1) The person filming is not living their life in the moment. And, 2) it is annoying having someone in front of you holding up their cellphones and obstructing your view.

I am glad JT rants about it, because that does help keep the filming to a minimum; but I also love when people capture some of his witticisms at shows that are too far flung for me to get to.

So conflicted! Maybe I will bring it up in therapy.

  4. Having done some documentary work, I appreciated Ashes... more as a documentary than as a pure concert film. It would be missing the point to critique Ashes... based solely on the music and performances that were included.

Though not on the same scale as Gimme Shelter (1970), Ashes does well contextualizing the music of Wilco within a "time." I mean this both on a historical and personal time-line: the images of dilapidated small-towns parallel the discussion on the physical toll of touring on individual band members.

This overriding theme, of deterioration and the passage of time, was also there in Wilco (the Album). The cover art of a birthday party, and the many times this year where the band sang "happy birthday" on tour, allude to growing older. Many of the songs on the album also carry this tenor: You Never Know, Country Disappeared, Sonny Feeling, Everlasting Everything...

I think Ashes and W(tA) worked very well together. They came out the same year, and represented a unified, thought-provoking theme for me. Ashes documents an American historical moment. I liked that what comes across isn't nostalgia or even critical comment, but just observation. Time is passing; we are growing older. Sorta makes me appreciate the here and now.

Pure concert films are a bore, and never as satisfying as going to a show, though I will be willing to try a Wilco one in 3D at a IMAX theater if they go that route. Wilco served up that way will be so much more meaty than Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, or U2.

  5. Took out Bahamas, China, Indonesia, South Korea, North Korea (about three feet across the 38th Parallel at Panmunjom; but that still counts, no?), Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam.

  6. Does anyone know why Jeff Tweedy gets so angry about people videoing and posting concert snippets online? Has he talked about this in any interviews?

The stuff on youtube is usually bad quality, but it does document something. I'd never waste a moment of my own enjoyment by videoing during a Wilco show, but I sometimes find these amateur videos informative for what they are. Especially for shows I didn't get to go to, but hear about.

As a student of anthropology, I think these mini-documentaries are equally about Wilco as they are auto-ethnographic films by Wilco's fans. I love the subjectivity of them -- representing so many different points-of-view (literally) of the same show.

I would love to know what it is exactly that irks JT about this.

    Theories? Conspiracy or otherwise?

  7. Yeah, she was raised by her mother, whose last name is Jones. The cover is fine, and there's already a thread dedicated to it.

Thanks. I was unaware of the earlier thread, and have just read through it.

I liked some of NJ's earlier work, and was curious about her version, but she colors completely within the lines here. Everything about her plays too safe. I have to agree with many of the other responses that NJ's version is bland. And it's not that I am such a purist about Wilco's work. I'm imagining that if Beyonce covered "Jesus, etc." that might've been more interesting -- something completely unlike the original. Some of the fan covers on youtube are enjoyable, too.

Maybe this is like a whistle that only dogs can hear, and I am just not getting it.

P.S. Does anyone else think her Shankar connection is helping her get more attention than she deserves? Ever since George W. Bush stole the election from Gore, I have been skeptical about second generation celebs, whether they are getting their gigs based on merit, or familial contacts.

  8. During the show Jeff had joked about how the Germans were not good at clapping (or something), then qualified it by saying that he didn't want to cause an international incident and anyway half his family were of German origin. When I met John, I said I was surprised as I always thought the Tweedy name was from the north of England, perhaps even related to the River Tweed which staddles the Scottish - English border (near to where I stay), but he said that Jeff's family definitely had German roots.

I read somewhere that his mother's maiden name was Werkmeister.

  9. I am very grateful for the taper who captured this show with his audience recording. I have it and it sounds fantastic for an audience taping.

That being said, my original request was for someone to capture and share the Roadcase version, which is a compressed soundboard version.

um. yeah... "capture and sharing" is not something I would know anything about, obviously.

Maybe they will release another live CD? It's been a while since Kicking Television.

  10. btw: Tweedy just sent me a PM, he's actually here and posting as futureage1, these are just the facts.

    Are you sure?

I am a little OCD about fact checking :blink , so went and cross-referenced futureage1's posts with Wilco's show schedule on wilcobase.com.

Some of the dates overlap. The one that stands out the most is on April 15 when Wilco did the photo shoot for (the Album) in Milwaukee, followed by a show at Pabst that night -- futureage1 posted 15 times that day.

I don't know whether the time listed is their local time or mine (I'm on Greenwich Mean), so can't say if the posts were during actual show times. It IS possible that Tweedy finds time to debate politics here in between his rock-n-roll duties. But, I am a skeptic by nature.

Why would you "out" him anyway, if you knew for sure? If futureage1 IS Tweedy, he won't be able to post as an equal in these forums now. It was kinda nice to be able to imagine everyone here to be a possible Tweedy.

  11. It's not like there is anything else going on here tonight. Why not just respond to a new poster and get a little action going on in here?

I didn't know I was rehashing, having just signed up. But the old thread(s) were interesting to read -- so thanks for finding them.

  12. Happened right in front of me, some kept flashing while taking pictures. Happened during 'trying to break my heart'. It was Jeff himself who grabbed camera (or cellphone) and he was very very pissed by the look on his face. During the song he came a couple of times in front to shout at him.

I was to the left of the couple when this happened. Jeff said "No videos" and then later he said "You'll get it back."
