  1. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the improv comment was meant more along the lines of Phish or Dead style extended jamming.

Wilco does not do extended jams. If they did, there would be more variation in their setlists from night to night because they would not be playing as many songs each night.

Then there'd be complaining about that, too.

Phish can go weeks without playing a given song because they play far fewer songs each night compared to Wilco (at least, that's how it was when I used to go see them circa Nectar/Rift/Hoist.)

yes, that is a correct characterization of my position re their lack of improvisation. again though, they are a phenomenal band and I frackin love them!!

  2. I'll chime in to agree that Wilco has one of the best road crews I've ever seen. Jeff's guitars are always ready, and the segue in and out of the acoustic set was perfect. Cliche phrase, but they are a well oiled machine.

    true dat!

  3. The acoustic segue was flawless in Richmond. As Poor Places crumbled into noise, the crew brought out a new drum set, some acoustic guitars, Jeff's upright bass, and two keyboards, and they got that set going without missing a beat. Same thing when it ended. Segued perfectly into Misunderstood. Don't know how, but it worked.

saw both Richmond and Bethesda the next night and the acoustic set and the segue into and out of was sweet both times, with different songs in Bethesda - Reservations into Spiders (which is so cool acoustic! who'da thunk?) and Passenger Side last acoustic into Airline to Heaven electric.

Highlight for me of the acoustic set at Richmond was How to Fight Loneliness, it was sublime, kind of a bossa nova vibe.

  4. You may not remember me, but we met a few years back at a rainy opening of a Harley Davidson dealership with DBT playing under a tent...

I remember we were talking about Wilco shows back then...

I also saw the exchange you were having with security and the Nationals management while I was standing in the will call line, about being to bring your gear inside...excellent work out of you.. At first it looked like there was no way they were going to allow you to bring it in..but i was amazed how you stood your ground and convinced them that you and your gear would be totally out of the way. Thank god you were there to tape it.

    true dat!

  5. At the YHF show in Ft. Lauderdale a few years back... the two covers were "Something in the air" by Thunderclap Newman and "Political Science" by Randy Newman. Was waiting for Tweedy to being Jerry Sienfeld on just so he could snarl "Hello, Jerry."

My pal has those songs on his ipod and played the Thunderclap in the car on the way to Richmond, it is terrific. Gotta their version of Political Science ("we'll spare Australia, don't wanna hurt no kangaroos!").

  6. Strangely enough, we were at both Dublin shows in August (Vicar Street) and then at the Iowa City show in October. Audience was perfectly behaved, exceptional even, at all three shows.

can't speak to dublin, but as someone who's lived most of my life in the east but spent 12 years in the midwest, folks there are generally way more polite than easterners, and it carries over to concerts

  7. In Dublin, the crowd is consistently perfect: considerate AND enthusiastic. Ever since Handel chose Dublin to premiere "The Messiah" in 1742, musicians have flocked here to perform for the exceptionally well-behaved audience. (I have my theories about the Catholic church run education system.)

Seriously, I have been to nearly a dozen Wilco/Tweedy solo shows in several European cities in the last couple of years, and have yet to see Cranky Tweedy. I have not ruled out that it is a seasonal rather than geographical occurrence.

Or maybe, since there are more shows in North America, though the percentage of jerks might be the same, the raw figures will be higher because the sample size is larger.

I've only been to one American show, and that was in Tanglewood 2008. I liked it a lot. No jerks there.

wow, as the person who started this thread (and LOVED both the Richmond and Bethesda shows), thanks for the edificiation, will have to go to Dublin sometime to check it out meself (and Springsteen's Live in Dublin DVD/CD is phenomenal, with the Sessions Band not the E Streeters)

  8. I suspect there may have been 36 songs on the printed setlist, but we can "thank" a guy in the first row of the first balcony for yelling out for Box Full of Letters all night. Jeff poked some fun at him during the show, but the band finally appeased him in the first song of the encore. And perhaps there was your 37th tune. :pirate

Four, actually. Don't forget Someday, Some Morning, Sometime. Just the second full-band performance ever!

they played it Monday night at Richmond too.

  9. because it is always good to reward bad behavior. they flew through hoodoo voodoo and i'm a wheel to make up for the appeasement.

it was a very refreshing show...having been to my fair share, it was pretty awesome to see the band change it up. acoustic spiders, rare songs in the mix, the (albeit weak) Jesus, etc. I was quite happy and content with the show. From my section, the crowd was fantastic, into it, and a lot of fun...except for the constant box full of letters request and the overzealous girl two rows behind me that would either yell "Tweedy" or some other random word that made absolutely no sense (i swear she was at the Ryman show several years back, one rarely forgets that pitch of 'Tweedy' being belted out all night). ah, if she'd only been busted a bit harder for trying to take pictures :stunned . all in all, great show, ear plugs were a good call, sound was awesome, venue was beautiful, and the band was great.

disagree on the flying thru Hoodoo Voodoo and I'm a Wheel, first off they were smokin' versions and I saw those two songs back to back at the Wappingers Falls show last summer and they were just as good and about the same length both times.

  10. This was the sixth and best show acoustically I've been to. The Strathmore is a beautiful venue, but I'd rather see them again at the Vic.

The acoustic set in the middle was boss...the transitions were seamless and it almost seemed like wilco opened for wilco who, in turn, opened for wilco...You cannot go wrong with essentially three sets with a three song encore of wilco!

good description, and it was a sublime show overall.

    Thank you, friend!

    any time!

  11. Tweedy was not cranky tonight (nor was I). Phenomenol show, slow at time but overall they were sublime. Here's what I posted:

Great show, a little slow at times but really picked up. Transition into and out of the acoustic set is way cool, seamless (and not always utilizing the same intro/outro songs bookending the switcheroo). Terrific encore -- Box Full of Letters (requested by fans! they heard us!), Hoodoo Voodoo (face-melting guitar licks traded by Nels and Pat) and I'm a Wheel. 3 hours for two nights in a row (for them and me - whew!). Airline was awesome, too, as were many, many songs. Very good sound mix (Richmond last night was just too loud), could hear all three guitarists but, as often, Nels needed more V! Pat was very sharp on guitar tonight, but his hair is getting way too creepy middle-aged faux glam guy. Nels' solo on Impossible Germany was probably the best I've heard in four shows, I think longer than usual, very silky yet sinuous and jazzy. Three Woody/Mermaid Ave. songs tonight! - CA stars, Airline 2 Heaven, Hoodoo Voodoo.

Have to say although they all rocked, the setlist starting with Jesus (not a bad singalong, Richmond may have been better last night, well yes, it was) up until Thank You Friends, which honky-tonked even more than last night, felt kinda obligatory, "we have to get in Hate it Here, ITMWLY, Walken, HMD etc. in real quick b4 someone complains" kinma thing, though again they did all rock.

Tweedy wasn't very cranky at all tonight, actually very charming and funny 2nite. Strathmore is almost too nice, Tweedy was afraid they might break it.
