  1. Oh, I loved "Anne of Green Gables" so much when I was 11 or 12! I should re-read it.

Just finished being blown away by Siri Hustvedt's "The Summer Without Men." Prose (and poetry) to knock your socks off!

Currently enjoying "Blood, Bones, and Butter," by Gabrielle Hamilton --a chef memoir, and a fantastic piece of writing. About 2/3 of the way through and I don't want it to end.

  2. Is anyone else have an issue with the site. I keep getting "loading" -- I figure it's something with my Internet settings.

I get that sporadically, too. Sometimes the photo on the home page comes up and stays only for seconds, then I get the "loading" thing-y too. But when I select "Shows" or "Roadcase" or whatever, it goes there w/out a problem.

  3. Yeah, I think it's got a whole new sound, fast and driving. It could probably be shorter and punchier, but when it's live I'll be glad for 4+ minutes.

  4. This song made a great impression on me at Solid Sound, and now I can't get enough of it! When I listen to it while drinking coffee in the morning, it makes my heart race. It's so damned infectious! Haven't heard that much feedback on the song itself from VCers. Y'all like it?

  5. Wow, watching that video made me glad and sad at the same time. It's so fantastic to have been a part of such a wonder-full confluence of music, art, film, comedy, good food and fellow Wilco-philes! That's the glad part. But I'm sad that it's over, that I can't put every second of it in a box and take it out when I want to... It was great reading other folks' musings on their favorite parts of the weekend -- how each person experiences the festival so differently. There were so many things to absorb that you really can't take it all in. It didn't feel overwhelming at the time, but you just can't see/hear/do it all. A five-year run would be manna from heaven.

  6. There is a great, over an hour long interview with Bob Edwards available, but I think I had to buy it on audible.com. Well worth the money, though. It was around A Ghost is Born, and they go through the entire UT history all the way up to and slightly past AGIB, as I recall. Bob Edwards does his research, and Jeff gives great interview!

Wow, hope I can put my hands on this! Plus it'd be nice just to hear Bob Edwards' voice again. Thanks for the info!

  7. Gillian Welch and David Rawlings were just on "Fresh Air" on my local NPR station. Nice interview, lots of songs. Can't wait to see them live again!

p.s. Crossing my fingers that Wilco or JT will finally appear on Fresh Air!

  8. "I'd retire from live shows afterward if they did and I was there."

Yes, I always do whether I'm fantasizing on a message board (and that's all this is, ya know) or doing a music mix on iTunes or on a cd.

I guess I have great ambivalence about ideals being realized or fantasies coming true. See your quote at the top. Anyway, I love not knowing what song is coming next, and you need a few "duds" (very loosely used term) for peeing, getting a beer, collecting your wits from being blown away by hearing the songs you truly love the most.

  9. The great thing about Wilco is that when you go to a show, no matter how many of your faves they play, there will still be some you wanted to hear but didn't. Then you get pumped for the next show, and no matter what they play, you have the supreme pleasure of seeing Wilco live. This setlist thread is complicated - did you guys think about the order and flow of the songs, too, or just what you wanted to hear? I can't begin to embark on a list. Just give me plenty of songs from BT, ST, AGIB, and sprinkle in some AM (okay, and a few from YHF) and I'll be a happy camper. The rest is, as they say, icing on the cake.

  10. Let's see

    Wilco (the song)

    Deeper Down

    ....

    ....

    Jesus, etc.

    ....

    ....

    Country Disappeared

    ...

    ...

    Monday

    ...

    ...

    You Never Know

    Sonny Feeling

    ...

    ...

    Handshake Drugs

    ...

    ...

    One Wing

Seriously, people. The anti W(TA) bias here is laughable.

Need only Country Disappeared from W(TA). Others highly unnecessary!

  11. I noticed the show in Columbia, Maryland at Merriweather Post Pavilion has a WRNR presale on Thursday, 7/14 from 9-10 am. Thought I'd give it a shot if Wednesday Frontgate presale doesn't pan out for me. But I can't find anything on the WRNR website that tells how to do the presale. Any DC/Maryland people out there in VC world that know what the deal is with this???

  12. From that Spin article a couple of months ago: ""Whole Love" is an easy-going country-rocker that finds Tweedy testing out his falsetto skills."

Love, love, love it when Jeff sings in falsetto. When he sang a verse of "I Shall Be Released" (day 3 of SS) in his high voice, it nearly gave me the vapors.

  13. 1. First heard Wilco in 1999 on the Gram Parsons tribute album (Return of the Grievous Angel).

    2. First show: July 2002. A free, outdoor show in Nashville that was a honeymoon surprise. Wish I could relive that one...when I see the setlist now, I'm blown away! They played I'm a Wheel, way back then!

  14. so a better chance of hearing Monday, check

Reading this, I realized that to some degree, that's really what it's about for me, too. If they play Monday, I'm 100% satisfied! Too bad all the Fall 2011 dates are HOURS and many DOLLARS away from my North Florida locale... I wonder if more US dates will be added, smaller cities -- maybe in the spring?

  15. 20. Late greats

    21. Heavy metal drummer

    22. Passenger side

    23. California stars (ft Sarah lee Guthrie)

    24. Airline to heaven

    25. Monday >

    26. Outtasite (Outta Mind)

    27. Hoodoo Voodoo (ft guitar tech on cowbell, who got applause for many minutes after show)

The encore set from night 2 of Solid Sound totally re-ignited my love for Wilco. I'd sort of felt my passion for the band fading... in a natural way, just sort of losing its intensity. And then, THIS! Specifically, Monday followed by Outtasite (after Red Eyed & Blue followed by I Got You on night 1)... this was a dream come true. All those songs from BT -- truly a wonder to witness. And of course, capping it all off, was Moustache Man, gyrating his way through the on-stage fog, playing that cowbell like it was what he was born to do. My love for Wilco burns once more!

  16. Did anybody catch Dave Douglas' Brass Ecstasy - curious to know your thoughts - read they did a Wilco cover.

I heard about 10 mins of their set and it was magnificent. Caught the brass band fever when I lived in New Orleans for a year... but did not hear the Wilco cover.

  17. That's when a lot of VCers either migrated to a different board, or only seldom post here..

A different Wilco-related board? Or was there maybe some loss of interest coinciding with the last two, not-very-well-received albums?

I pursued this "old days of VC" conversation, b/c I'm so curious to know what it used to be like. Interestingly, although SBS and WTA are lowest on my list, my fandom increased a few years ago as the earlier albums worked themselves deeper and deeper into my psyche.

Anyhow, I have fun being on here and talking with Wilco devotees and critics. No one else in my immediate world shares my passion for the band, so it's nice to have my "imaginary Wilco friends," as my husband likes to say!
