  1. has Wilco not been on SNL in the past?

i seem to remember Wynona Ryder wearing a Wilco t-shirt once when introducing a band.

No, when Winona hosted the show back in 2002 the musical guest was Moby. However, she was wearing a Wilco shirt when she introduced him (later in the show she had on a Tom Waits shirt. She has awesome taste in music!! :yes ).But yeah, she did introduce Wilco two times though, once on Conan and the other on Leno!

  2. as an immense and devoted tom waits fan i surprised myself by being mildly indifferent towards this release, but covering Fawn?? really?? does scarlett play violin? one of the most beautiful recordings of all time, and i'm a little worried to think what scarlett will do to it. she's really beautiful and a good actress, but Fawn? reallyyy???

You know, I thought the same thing...I don't get it! :dontgetit

I'm not too thrilled with the thought of this album-that is until I heard that David Bowie is involved! :D

  3. Bowie sings on two tracks!!! :omg

Johansson Unveils Waits Covers Album In NYC

    Scarlett Johansson

    February 12, 2008, 6:30 PM ET

    Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Scarlett Johansson unveiled her debut album, "Anywhere I Lay My Head," for journalists today (Feb. 12) at New York's Joe's Pub. As previously reported, the album includes 10 Tom Waits covers and one original ("Song for Jo"), and will be released May 20 via Atco/Rhino.

"Anywhere" was produced by TV On The Radio's Dave Sitek, who told the crowd he was going for a "cough medicine/Tinker Bell" vibe, sound-wise. David Bowie, whom Johansson met a party just prior to beginning work on the album, lends his distinctive vocals to the tracks "Falling Down" and "Fannin' Street," while Yeah Yeah Yeahs guitarist Nick Zinner and members of the band Celebration contribute throughout.

Johansson said she initially considered making an album of standards, but that the project slowly morphed into a Waits-dominated affair. "His melodies are so beautiful and his voice is so distinct," she said.

The result, according to Johansson, has met with the notoriously persnickety Waits' approval. "I sent him some of the early, early recordings, and he said, 'Go ahead,'" she said. "I've heard he's very pleased."

While the majority of the album lives up to Sitek's prior description, there are some up-tempo departures, particularly on "I Don't Want To Grow Up," which boasts drum machine beats straight out of a New Order song.

There are no plans for Johansson to perform live in support of the project, but she says she'd be intrigued by "getting everybody together," perhaps at a festival, at some point in the future. "It would be a missed opportunity not to."

Here is the track list for "Anywhere I Lay My Head":

    "Fawn"

    "Town With No Cheer"

    "Falling Down"

    "Anywhere I Lay My Head"

    "Fannin' Street"

    "Song for Jo"

    "Green Grass"

"I Wish I Was in New Orleans"

"I Don't Want To Grow Up"

    "No One Knows I'm Gone"

    "Who Are You?"

  4. In a certain light he looked like Elvis

In a certain way he feels like Jesus

Everyone dreams of him just as they can

But he's only the humble Delivery Man

Oh, yes! I forgot about that one. I love that song and that album! It's one of my favorites! :yes

Also, here is a new song that was co-written by T Bone Burnett. I was lucky enough to hear Elvis premiere it at the Bob Dylan show this past September.

    From Sulfur to Sugar Cane:

It's not very far from sulfur to sugar cane

Everywhere I travel pretty girls call my name

I give them a squeeze and they shoot me a wink

I buy their hard-headed husbands a long cool drink

You better come up smelling sweet 'cos you're a long time stinking

It's a little too late to complain

It's not very far from sulfur to sugar cane

Now if you catch my eye and it seems to run down your leg

It's like striking a match pretty hard upon a powder keg

They tell you from the borders to the waters of the gulf

If you take all the sugar you will end up in the sulfur

    And you're burning

Hello baby I'm pleased to meet ya

I wouldn't do you wrong, honey

    I wouldn't cheat ya, honey

When can I see you again?

    Wrap you up in cellophane

It's not very far from sulfur to sugar cane

It's not very far from sulfur to sugar cane

Then your eyes fill up with brine

    When you're drowning in wine

It's like the last days of Rome

    With the despots and divine

And there's no place like home for a little doll from China

It's a little too late to complain

It's not very far from sulfur to sugar cane

You can go west to Texas

    Go east to Mississippi

You can run out of money

You can run out of pity

Throw open your purse until you're crying for mercy

    Go to Alabama

    Escape Louisiana

I'm digging like a miner North and South Carolina

And then if you continue you will end up in Virginia
