  1. Ugh, this thread is sick... but fascinating. I hate surgery, blood, anesthesia, pills, and all things related. Just the thought makes me a little nauseous- which is one of several reasons why I became a psychologist and not a psychiatrist. :yucky

  2. Earlier, I looked up the composition of Staff as a building material. With it's accuracy in question, I'd direct you to this wikipedia artice where it references the term "temporary buildings". Apparently not a very hearty material.

It is hard to understand given the size, scale and our vantage point all that effort with the mindset of destroying it later.

I recall reading that, in deciding what materials to use, they wanted not only cheap and quick construction materials/methods but also those that would lend themselves to salvage. It seemed that permanence of the buildings was not a factor, as they also considered just lighting them on fire at the end of the fair.

  3. Gibson is one of the easiest, most complacent, most deferent interviewers on TV, which is exactly why he got the interview.

It was like being "grilled" by your slightly incompetent high school guidance counselor. :monkey I was never a Palin fan to begin with, but I found her truly scary during this interview. I could have voted for McCain pre-Palin, but now - absolutely not. But maybe I'm sexist?

  4. I have a real fear of Zombies, and Zombie attacks.

Me, too, for real. The original Night of the Living Dead did me in. Reading Christine by Stephen King when I was about 12 also terrified me; I still fear the car coming to life and running me down. Irrational, I know. On a more rational note, Cindy McCain is one scary chick! And growing up in the Assembly of God church gave me a fear of Pentecostals and the rapture.

    P.S. I also love TMBG, KevinG :)

  5. I'm about 2/3 thru the book now, so I'm making steady progress. I am exclusively a non-fiction reader, and I am enjoying the book very much (perhaps enjoying is not the correct word). First, Larson may take some liberties with the facts (I think he would have to) but, as a psychologist, I must say that his representation of Holmes' pathology rings true. Scary scary scary. Second, at least for me, the Devil and the White City must go together. I think reading just about Holmes and his evil ways would be too much for me to tolerate; on the other hand, I'm not sure I could stay interested in a book that was ONLY about the fair. Finally, the tensions between the different regions of the country should not surprise us. The same dynamic still exists between blue state/red state, rural/suburban/urban, and so on.

  6. my dad died suddenly of a heart attack while swimming in the gulf of mexico last month, and i heard the expression re: dying doing something they loved a lot.

it really means nothing to me. i understand why people say it but it rarely seems true.

Rareair, still hurts like hell, however you want to spin it. ((Hugs))

That was a sad sad story about Ms. Warren. :(

  7. Christmas on Mars. This is going to be awesomely bad! Has anyone seen this at any of the festivals it has been screened?

We saw it at Wakarusa the next night after we saw the Lips. Loud, bizarre, entertaining, and loud. (Did I say loud?) That's the movie. The Lips? Earnest, positive, and fun. Also loud, bizarre, entertaining, and loud. After seeing them live, they are my 10 y/o son's favorite band.

  8. This is what I was told yesterday...that they would be shipped today. :hmm Cutting it a tad close, aren't they? I'm glad this isn't one of the shows I was going to stay out of town/travel too far for in case tickets don't arrive until the day of.

WOW... I'm a little unhappy with musictoday. God speed, USPS. We have rural delivery - just one step up from the Pony Express - so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the tix get here in time. Clouds of Fluff, you're probably in a similar situation out there in the Flint Hills, aren't you?

  9. Wow. I knew I listened to the radio alot in the 90s, but this list has made me realized that I reeeeealllllly listened to the radio alot then. There was a great alternative station at that time out of Lawrence, Kansas, that I really enjoyed (105.9 the Lazer). Anybody else an ex-fan? I also was exposed to a lot of country, pop, and hair metal, but we won't even go there! Now, isn't anybody gonna mention STP? I wasn't a huge fan, but they were all over the radio in the 90s. And what about that tune "Box Full of Letters" - anybody else remember that one from 90s radio? I think I'd better go call my sister up now and ask to borrow her VHS of Reality Bites! :lol

  10. stooka,

I had a real thing for that Slackjawed song by the Connells and still have a thing for older Buffalo Tom. Thanks for the memories! We definitely coulda hung out, flannels and all! I don't think I have any old mixtapes around, but I know I made a good many that involved Frank Black, REM, they might be giants, NIN, and that vein of the 90s alternative sound. It's funny how much effort and intensity it took to get a mixtape just right back in the day and how pathetically easy it is to make one with itunes. It's almost not worth the (lack of) effort. :ohwell

    And nice topic, Pop Todd!

  11. Try Born. Very comfy in my experience. Chucks are not so good for lots of walking, nor are Doc boots. I used to wear Sauconys when I ran cross country, and they were comfy as well. I think they're made overseas now though, so they may not be quite the same.

  12. 'cept i hope the sorority girls don't blab throughout the show like in colombia. The recording reveals a bunch of blah blah blahing during Jesus, et al. slow songs.

Oh, god, I know! I had some right by me part of the show, and I thought I was going to have to throw down! (An incident that would have been challenging to explain to the Anger Management group that I lead. ) :blush

By the way, what's the pre-sale password, anybody?

  13. Certainly a candidate for the Worst Kept Secret Award.

Yeah, I know. My friend and I were so disappointed when we realized that he was probably gay, because we had such huge crushes on him. That was around the Monster years. (Ah, I'm gettin' sentimental....) I'm holding out for the cd until my birthday, cuz I'm old school like that.
