  1. I wouldn't share any on my list, but I love all these albums. And, I just want to say that it's awesome to see that Ian Dury album on somebody's list.

Thanks.  It's a very special album to me based on how miserable I was when I discovered it and how it made me happy!

  2. Man this was hard

    Warren Zevon-Warren Zevon

    The Who-Who's Next

    Van Morrison-Moondance

    Ian Dury-New Boots and Panties

    The Clash-London Calling

If someone were to argue with me that these are not the five greatest albums of all time I would concede that they were correct.  But they are my favorites.

  3. Wow, some great musical taste on display here.  Some great stuff to search out too.

    Let me try a couple

  4. I opined on another thread somewhere that musicians, much like baseball players, peak in their mid to late 20s.  It's not universal, of course, but it's a solid rule of thumb.

I don't have any to add to the list, but I think some artists, particularly those whose careers get a late start or who don't have a lot of success early (and don't get rich and complacent), tend to continue to produce good music longer than those who have a lot of early success.  John Hiatt versus Paul McCartney, for instance.

  5. We saw the acoustic group last May.  Kunkel is indeed fantastic.  Check his credits on allmusic.com.  Impressive resume.  I think bringing some younger musicians aboard (not necessarily Kunkel) has re-energized Lovett.  It seems like maybe his best songwriting days may be behind him, but his performing is going through a Renaissance.

My wife asked me why I was so impressed by Russ Kunkel. I told her he played on "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" and she understood!

It was the best, most relaxed performance from Lyle that I have seen. Highly recommended.

  6. Saw Lyle Lovett last night, a thoroughly entertaining show.  It was my third time to see him, second time with the Large Band.  This was a pretty long show, almost 2 1/2 hours and he squeezed in almost every song you would expect, plus a few surprises.  I had never seen him do God Will, Church or North Dakota before.  Church was epic.  My Baby Don't Tolerate and I've Been to Memphis were also highlights.

Francine Reed was in the band this time and she is a show-stealer (you ugly too!).

It was a strange crowd.  The venue was the Lutcher Theater in Orange, Texas and the crowd was mostly old, rich patrons who have season tickets to every performance at the theater. They normally do broadway-style shows and plays, not popular music concerts.  It was full of blue-hairs on walkers and in suits and dresses.  I told my wife before the show that I didn't think Pete Townsend would be bashing Abby Hoffman with his guitar tonight.  She replied that if there was a fire, we would be the first ones out!  They laughed a lot at Lyle and even seemed ok with his risqué stuff like the ugly from the front bit.

The Large Band is terrific and Russ Kunkel is one of my favorite drummers.  Good stuff.

  7.

Yes, that is a great read. Thanks for the link.

There are several great acts mentioned along the thread who are deserving of the hall.  Warren Zevon is my personal favorite.  He'll never make it and I suspect one of the reasons why is just what Chris Frantz was talking about.  He never had a great team.  Actually, he probably had numerous great teams behind him but he was so impossible to work with he couldn't keep them.

  8. I actually went out and bought the cd at a store yesterday, something I can't remember doing since maybe Warren Zevon's The Wind more than a decade ago

Enjoying the crap out of it.  It doesn't seem like it's full of classics, but it is consistently good.  All 13 songs are worth listening to.
