  1. Don't remind me. Three encores!

Is it cruel that I was at that show? I was a late Wilco bloomer, and had really only been into them for a year or two and this was the first time seeing them live, and still my favorite. Really great show. Wish there was a recording of it somewhere.

As for last night, that was my first time seeing Tweedy solo, and I really enjoyed it. It is a testament to these songs that they can stand up so well with just Jeff and his guitar. Really enjoyed the newer stuff too. I found the interaction between Jeff and the crowd to be fun, and I think the crowd for the most part did a good job of being quiet. I do wish the actual mix was a little louder though. Also, it seems like the Orange Peel is overselling shows these days. That place was crowded.

Great write up by the way.

  2. Well, of course I would like to see them hit a higher number. I believe both YHF and AGIB charted up to around 3 or 4, but memory is fallible, and I'm too lazy to research it.

According to Wikipedia, YHF debuted at 13, and AGIB at 8. SBS and WTA debuted at 4. I really don't think they have any reason to be disappointed in the sales of this album. Unless Tweedy does a stint on American Idol, I think they are near their peak in the current musical climate.

  3. I am fit to be tied.

Discovered today that, in her infinite pursuit of a). extreme tidiness or B). attempting to see my head explode, my lovely wife managed to ruin the stylus on my turntable. I guess I never told her that one must use extreme care when cleaning a turnbable and not attempt the gorilla scrub approach.

    Grrrr.

First time I have cried in months. I so love listening to vinyl. Maybe now is a good time to upgrade your stylus, if upgrading is needed.

  4. NZ Under the Radar 9 / 10

Unfortunately, there is one small blemish to one song on the album. I would be remiss to ignore “Dawned On Me”s undeniable homage/soundalike to Supergrass’s “Alright”. The song is catchy, a great danceable track, with an incredibly memorable hook - it’s just unfortunate that same hook teeters on the line between homage and carbon-paper territory.

This was an interesting thing that I haven't seen pointed out before. After listening, I would vote homage, but there are some similarities. What do y'all think?

  5. So interesting to hear all the opinions. There are some songs I love, some songs I like, and some that I need to listen to more. Its a new Wilco album, so I am pretty happy. I do love a lot of the layered instrumentation, as well as some of the great lyrics by Jeff. We will see how long it holds up, but I am happy so far.

  6. Anyway, I knew Jeff was only a year or two younger than me, so I called in with a guess. I got through, but guessed wrong. I tried again, and got through a second time, but still guessed wrong. On my third try, amazingly, I got through again, and this time had the right guess

Oh, the days before google. What do radio stations do now?

  7. I almost always listen to it, unless someone else is in the car with me. One of the things I really love about this song is that there is a temptation to skip the rest of the song. Its as if Tweedy is daring you to end it to get to the Late Greats. I think the drone makes the album better, and is not as pretentious as some people have argued. Of course we all know that the song is a sonic representation of a migraine, which unlike the song, cannot be skipped. That is usually the reason I listen to it, because they wanted me too. Sometimes I actually like the dissonant sounds, but other times I am just waiting for it to be over. But I still listen.

  8. 1. Somewhere around '96/'97 on a radio station we could get out of Athens GA, whenever Being There first came out. Outtamind, Outtasite. I had heard of Uncle Tupelo and already owned and loved Trace at the time.

    2. May 2003, Asheville at the Orangepeel.

    1. My friend downloaded a couple of songs from Wilco around the time YHF came out. I think I got AM first, and then my wife bought YHF for my birthday. It honestly did not click with me the first time I heard it. Around the third or fourth time I listened to it, it was like a lightswitch went on. YHF is probably my favorite album ever, and still routinely gets played on the ol' LP player (sounds so freaking good on vinyl).

    2. I went to that same show in Asheville as my first. I can still remember them opening with One by One. It was a great show, that included a few songs I haven't heard since, like Bob Dylans Beard, More Like the Moon, Laminated Cat, and Casino Queen. I need to listen to this boot soon.

  9. So I got to meet Don Chatier at a Lagunitas tasting yesterday, and he told the story of this beer. Again, the original name of the beer was supposed to be Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (WTF, get it?). He said that after the beer came out, they ended up talking to some people from Wilco, and sent a few cases their way. Because of this, they actually got involved with Solid Sound this year, and he said they are hoping to have the band over for a visit to the brewery sometime.
