My profile says I joined June 17, 2003.  One the one hand I thought I joined earlier but on the other, that's a long time ago!

The current iteration of the board (that is, the one running on Invision software) came into existence around that time, and it looks like everyone had to rejoin at that point (even the oldest members like Narziss and kidsmoke have join dates of June 2003), so it's likely you were one of the first to join the new board. Before that, it was on phpBB software - here are a couple of the oldest captures I can find for that version:

    http://web.archive.org/web/20020409224109/http://www.viachicago.org/phpBB/index.php

(Sadly, none of the links there work anymore, but I'm sure that'll bring back some memories for some of you :) ).

Incidentally, for those so inclined, you might find it fun to go digging through VC's history with the wayback machine (http://web.archive.org/web/*/viachicago.org). There's some fun things to stumble across in there. For example, this interview Narziss and LLP conducted with Wilco's former manager, Tony Margherita: http://web.archive.org/web/20021122030036/http://www.viachicago.org/archives/TMInterview.html

*EDIT* For that matter, the phpBB board join dates only go back to Spring 2002 (http://web.archive.org/web/20020712191053/http://www.viachicago.org/phpBB2/memberlist.php?sid=cab30ebd6df270a8124775c9615df814), so there was probably yet ANOTHER board before that, which was apparently lost to history since the wayback captures don't go back any further. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me could probably find more with some digging though.

  2. Probably won't be awake to catch it live (my wife works afternoon/evening shift at a covid processing lab, so we're on a weird schedule), but I'll honestly just be relieved if I don't wake up to an ongoing crisis megathread in r/politics. Maybe we'll open a bottle of wine or something tomorrow night though.

I had a few more pics to share, but I can't figure out how to do so. I keep getting a message indicating I'm only allowed to share a certain amount of bytes.

Sorry about that....uploads were previously capped at 5 MB per post, so you might have been running into that limit. I've bumped it up to 30 MB per post to avoid similar issues in the future.

Bear in mind that there's currently a max upload storage limit, across all forums, of ~2 GB per user by default (this quota may change in the future depending on server resources). If anyone finds themselves running into this ceiling, please contact one of the admins and we'll see what we can do.

  4. I think today's admission may be the closest we ever get to an actual "concession" from Trump. Even if he announces it more formally at a press conference or rally, it'll be couched in terms of illegal voting, rigged elections and probably some good ol' fashioned racism for good measure, because he's literally incapable of admitting actual defeat or failure. Hell, he's still sore that he didn't win the popular vote in 2016,  an election he actually did win overall.

Whatever. He can keep bitching about it, filing frivolous lawsuits and making vague mafia-style threats, his congress cronies can make all the "we'll see what happens"-type platitudes they want, and his supporters can keep screaming 3-syllable slogans until they all infect each other with covid, none of it changes the fact that Trump will cease to be president on January 20th.

I think Warnock could win handily, but Ossoff will be tougher. He's been demonized as a pawn of Nancy Pelosi in that race, so he's got an uphill battle. Still, worth fighting for!

Yeah looking at the current percentages, I think you might be right about Warnock, but it's still going to be a tough fight. Loeffler would actually have a plurality right now if it wasn't for Collins splitting the vote. With Collins out of the race I worry his supporters will shift to Loeffler instead.

In any case, I wouldn't want to live in Georgia the next couple of months. I don't even live in a swing state and I've gotten probably a hundred different political calls and texts in the last couple of weeks, not to mention the political mail. I can't even imagine the bombardment Georgia residents will be under.

As an aside: Has that ever worked on anyone? The random phone calls and messages from god knows who, who lives god knows where, asking me for my support of some candidate? By the 10th or 15th text I'm ready to vote for the opposition purely out of spite. I hope the dems are brainstorming some GOTV ideas to appeal to younger generations - AOC's recent "Among Us" livestream was a really engaging and unconventional idea and I'd love to see more stuff like that. I think I speak for most millennials/Gen-Z'ers when I say that nobody reads political text messages or picks up phone calls from random numbers.

  6. Nice to feel a bit of relief for once after the past four years. I wish I could actually feel happy about it  - I thought I would be ecstatic about a Biden win, but without the senate it feels like a bit of a hollow victory. Obviously the two GA seats are still a possibility, but even winning one of those would be extremely lucky and we need both for a majority. I suspect Biden will have to issue a ton of executive orders to make any progress at all over the next 2 years minimum.

  7. I'm following the reddit live thread and hoping for some good news. Intentionally avoiding news sites and FiveThirtyEight because I'm terrified of what the updated projections might show. Trying to brace for the worst but I have to admit, I'm not ready for it. Not again.

  8. :yay Love the DeVos one. Reminds me of those decorative throw pillows you can buy with phrases like, "Eat a bag of dicks" written in big curly script. I'm also a big fan of the "Fuck Trump" kitten in the corner. :lol

*Edit: Does she sell these anywhere, or are they just for personal use/family/friends? I would definitely pay for some of those. And they'll still be relevant for a few months no matter what happens tomorrow. :P:crybaby

  9. That was a heartwarming read and the pictures they sprinkled in are adorable. I also appreciated the self-awareness. From the title I was expecting the article to harp on about the unique things Jeff did as a parent that really drove Spencer's creative development, but they make it clear from the get-go that it was a combination of good parenting and Spencer being extremely lucky to grow up immersed in the music scene. Which makes sense of course - Jeff's parenting style/philosophy is certainly admirable, but not at all unique (at least not by modern standards?), and there are surely millions of other parents who are just as supportive and encouraging. But of course most of those parents aren't career musicians. :P

  10. Pelosi's press conference today implied that the 25th amendment might be under consideration, given Trump's "altered" mental state. If so that could explain Pence's sudden change of plans. Supposedly she'll be discussing it more tomorrow.

  11. I realized recently that I may have incorrectly set the notification settings during our recent software upgrade, and many of you may not have been getting notifications for topic replies and/or other followed content. In the interest of making sure everyone is getting notifications by default, I've reset the default notification settings and set all user notification preferences to these defaults (I apologize for any inconvenience this causes to those of you who have already modified your notification preferences since the board upgrade). With the new default settings, you should now be automatically "following" (subscribed to) any topics you create or reply to. "Bubble" notifications (red markers over the bell in the user panel) should now be enabled for almost all categories, including topic replies. In addition to bubble notifications, email notifications will also be sent for: new PMs, "@YourUsername" mentions (e.g. @Neuroglue), and new content in any followed forums or topics.

You can customize these settings on the "Notification settings" page, which is on the right side of the "Account settings" page (or at the bottom, if you're on mobile). Please note that the "New content for things I follow" setting controls notifications for new forum content, and topic reply notifications are controlled by "Someone comments on something I follow."

As always, please contact us if you have any questions/problems.

I had to enter it a few times. And then it worked.

Possibly a browser cache issue, at least with regards to @Analogman's problem. Not sure if it explains @uncool2pillow 's problem, but it's the only thing I can think of at present. We applied a major software update to the board last night, so some browsers/devices are probably getting confused because of leftover cached data from the old board. For anyone else who runs into this issue, try clearing your cache/browser data first (on Chrome, this would be: 3-dot menu -> History -> History -> Clear Browsing Data).

Any other issues (or suggestions, or complaints), please send us a PM, post on the "Speakers Speaking..." forum, or just use the "Contact Us" link at the bottom of the page (if you can't log in at all).
