  1. Your (official? Am I the only meteorologist on the board? edit--no, now I remember I'm not even the only Milwaukee meteorologist on the board!) Red Rocks forecast: to be vulgar, it's going to be hot as balls. If you're going either day and plan on waiting in line, make sure you bring some sort of sun protection. Umbrellas work WONDERS! As they say, at least it will be a dry heat--which means once the sun goes down, it'll cool quickly. Sunny and 98° today, falling into the upper 70's by show time. Tomorrow, sunny and 100°, probably mid to upper 70's by show time.

    See you all on Saturday!

  2. That show was supposed to be my final one of the North American tour, but I backed out. I knew about a dozen people getting ready to enter when it fell, and they're all very shaken. My heart goes out to the family of Scott Johnson, the drum tech that was killed. It makes me wonder which one of the guys I was watching behind the kits for the last two weeks is not with us anymore. While I'm not as tight with Radiohead crew as I am with other bands, myself and a lot of (mildly) insane Radiohead fans are at a loss right now. That band is kind to a fault, and works with very warm and gracious people; I'm sure the whole camp is going to take some time to get back to normal.

To quote a friend that was at the show, finishing out what was a spectacular summer tour on the continent: It's like a box of happy memories destroyed in a fire.

  3. Feral live is intense. The bass building at the end gets you jacked.

As far as Tinley Park, the queuing was a nightmare. Bottom line: we had no access to water or bathrooms for about 6 hours unless we wanted to walk about 2 miles to our cars (in 90° heat). It really tainted my experience. The sound was very good though, but I sincerely hope no band I like ever goes there again.

  4. I almost always call my friend who loves Wilco but has never seen them live. Usually I call during songs from Being There or acoustic songs so it's not too distorted. I think I have it down to an art form now, haha.

The art of almost being there?

  5. Just seems kind of weird that someone at the show would be tweeting the whole time. I mean it's cool for us to get the setlist in real time, but kinda strange

Well, it doesn't take much. You can do it at the end of the song while everyone's clapping and not miss any of the action. I've done it for a couple of shows and it didn't take away from my enjoyment or those around me; it actually made a few friends of mine really happy.

  6. The handful of people I know went to all 5 shows truly experienced a spectacle over the last week. I really wish I could have attended another show in the run, but I feel lucky to have experienced every aspect of yesterday: the camaraderie in line, the tiny--sparsely decorated--stage, the once-in-a-lifetime set, and the cookies. My god the cookies.

I really enjoyed being able to watch Nels working his pedals, trying to bleed every last sound out of a guitar. Even thought it was a mainly low-key set, not one constructed for noise and dissonance, it was a treat to see exactly how he makes those little flourishes in the quieter songs.

The set was spectacular. I missed out on hearing the full band version of Laminated Cat during the "evening with" shows, but I finally saw it here. That's one of my favorite Wilco(ish) songs and I thought I would never get to see that played outside of a solo show. In that same vein, the circa 2003 arrangement for Spiders was very special.

And 'twas an admirable defense of the meteorological profession, Mr. virtualreason!

I kind of felt like a dick after that, so I hope I didn't come off as one. That was also my opportunity to goose him about not having snow in the forecast!

Oh, Nels totally stole the banter show with (paraphrasing) "After the song, there are...subtle notes of optimism."

  7. My wife and I were in the front row and very excited for the show. We were one of the 6 standing from the beginning. At first I was afraid that we would be asked to sit down but thankfully that never happened.

My friend and I were front and center, and I'm very thankful that you guys were also standing. I was just waiting for someone to get mad/loud during One Sunday Morning. It's a good choice for an opener, but it's tough to get people to stand for it. Thank you for adding strength to our numbers :thumbup
