  1. The Faces were a fabulous band, but don't forget the Jeff Beck Group either.Hell,Ronnie Wood, pianist extrodinaire Nicky Hopkins...if that band would have stayed together they could have rivaled the mighty Zep. :rock Beck-Ola is essential imo.

True, awesome band...but I'd take Truth over Beck-Ola.

  2. Are you implying that every Republican, some Dems, and some Undecideds are too uneducated/stupid to put it into context? :pirate

No. What I'm saying is that republicans will not bother to put it into context, AND will have it spewed out of context from now until the polls are closed (or until republicans retain/regain control...whichever comes first) by Fox/Drudge/Rush/Hannity/Coulter,etc. Having said that, there are a lot of people of all politcal stripes who are too uneducated to put this into context.

  3. I don't know about that...between the news spots about Kerry there are 1,049,048 commercials for everyone's own various obnoxious local politicians that either incenses or motivates them as voters. While this will have an impact on the election, I feel it's going to be very slight.

Believe me, I hope you're right. I happen to think Fox News/talk radio and Drudge Report are far more influential than campaign commercials on tv.

Of course Diebold is more influential than any of that.

  4. Nevermind every other point I made, just knock the analogy...

My overarching point, as explained in the rest of my posts, is that people don't see Kerry has the 'leader' or the brainiac of the Dems but rather as the 'celebrity' of the Dems, because he was the dude that ran for office that one time...He said stupid things then that didn't get him elected, and he's saying stupid things again.

In that case, I strongly disagree with your point. The presidential nominee is a bit more than "the dude that ran for office that one time". Those stupid things he says, to a lot of people who hear them, are the official position of the democratic party. At the very least, it's extremely easy for Rove and Fox to spin those words into something equating the democratic talking points.

  5. many Republicans are still insisting that Kerry called the troops dumb when it is painfully obvious that he didn't.

What do you mean by "still"? His speech was yesterday, right? From now until Tuesday they'll be saying it louder and believing it more. Bank on that.

  6. no it won't, christ

OK, mayne not ALL democrats, but the democrats are far less likely to regain control of anything now. John Kerry was the nominee two years ago, and remains one of the three or four highest profile democrats currently in office. Every republican in America, plus lots of democrats and undecideds, right now believe he said soldiers are uneducated and/or stupid. OUCH...democrats just lost. See you in '08.

  7. Kerry did have a poor choice of words, but anyone who takes even a moment to read or hear what he had to say, in its proper context ...

And that would amount to how many people? Virtually none.

The fact is, the republican response to this will damage all democrats next Tuesday. John Kerry's speech, even if he got the words right, was not going to harm Bush or any republican in the least.

  8. Who does Glen Kotche think he is? Sure he's great at some things, but he can't play big band swing as well as Ed Shaugnessy.

That's basically what several people around here have been saying about Nels Cline.

  9. DBT "will probably be around a long time"?

    WHAT?

I'm pretty sure Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood have been making music together for about 20 years now. I'm pretty sure they have 6 albums...

What the hell is going on in this thread?

So you agree with me. Why the outrage?

  10. fwiw, DBT formed in '96, so if you saw them that year (which would be 10 years ago), consider yourself pretty lucky. i don't know that they played out of Athens much until '98

but yeah, to call DBT one dimensional, then champion KoL, is amusing, as someone pointd out.

also, i just looked, the KoL guys aren't all "that young", Nathan is 27, Caleb & Matthew are 24, and Jared is going to be 20.

It might have been '97 (absolutely no chance it was later than '98) when I saw them at Dottie's Bar in Atlanta. They had a pedal steel player that night. I liked that show better than anything I've heard from them since.

For the record, I am championing KOL as a band who I feel have great potential. I think DBT has already fulfilled their potential.

  11. Calling the Truckers one dimensional in comparison to the Kings of Leon :o ?

    Just sayin....

I think there's more musical variety on Aha Shake Heartbreak than on any of the Truckers albums I've heard. Granted, KOL's vocals are one dimensional.

I'm not saying KOL are the best rock band right now, I'm just saying they could be in another 10 years if they continue putting out solid albums and grow as a live band.

  12. Uhhh....DBT and MMJ?

Edit: Or are they too old.

Actually, DBT are pretty old. Much older than KOL. I don't like their music, so I don't consider them a contender. Plus, they'll be ancient by the time the average age of the KOL guys hits 30. My Morning Jacket could be around for a while. DBT will probably be around for a long time, too, but like I said I don't care for them. I think they're sound is too one dimensional and folks might get sick of them after another five years or so. It's too bad, I wanted to like them ever since seeing them in a rathole bar in Atlanta 10 or 12 years ago.

  13. Based on the fact that they are so young (aren't some of those guys still under 21?) and they've released two solid albums thus far, I am of the belief that they are on course to be the best straight up rock and roll band in America by the time the are 30 years old.

They could easily blow it, though.

I don't know about the VW commercial coming out when they were unknowns. I think that came out after they had been on tour opening for the Strokes...a pretty high profile slot for any musician to be in. (By the way, they blew the Strokes off the stage when they played together in Atlanta, but that's nor saying much.)

  14. When I was in high school, some cool guy working at the local independent record store told me that Double Nickels on the Dime "changed his life." Was never able to get into it. What's a good starting point for the Minutemen?

Re: fIREHOSE, I still like "Down with the Bass" - even though Flyin' the Flannel wasn't the greatest record in the world.

If you don't like Double NIckels you should probably stop trying to like the Minutemen.

I've always considered "Ragin' Full On" and "Flyin' the Flannel" to be by far the strongest Firehose albums.

  15. I'm interested in checking out some of his other work. Any suggestions on where to start?

Any of his releases on the Cryptogramophone label are good places to start, as they're a pretty good rerpresentation of what he does when he is the boss. Those include 'The Inkling", "Instrumentals", "The Giant Pin" and "New Monastery".

If you want to hear him playing rock music you might want to check out Mike Watt's "Contemplating the Engine Room" (he also shines on Watt's "Ball Hog or Tugboat", but he's only on part of that album).
