  1. also, whoever said they hated Echo? i just said that save for a few songs it didn't hold my interest too much. i haven't really hated any Petty record.

and i like Cabin Down Below, was fun live in St. Paul

I don't think anyone said they hated Echo, but it is widely considered a flop for some reason. An old thread here was pretty negative towards it, much moreso than this thread.

Cabin Down Below probably makes a good live song (dumb songs always work better live than on record, especially when you have 20,000 drunk fans). I can't remember if he played it when I saw him on the Echo tour. On record, it's a song that I thought was fantastic the first time I heard it and terrible every time since.

  2. echo is a classic. dont understand the hate for it.

Totally. Lots of great songs on Echo. "Lonesome Sundown" and "One More Day, ONe More Night" are two of his best ballads. There's also no shortage of fun pop-rock tunes on there. "Accused of Love", "This Ones for Me" come to mind. No shortage of straight rock and roll, either, and some blistering lead guitar on "Room at te Top". Pretty much everything you could hope for from a Tom Petty record.

Wildflowers has good songs, but to my ears it suffers in a big way from Steve Ferrone's heavyhanded drumming (maybe it's just mixed too loud). T.P. says he's STILL struggling to get that guy up to speed (thought I think Ferrone did a fine job on Echo) . I think the session dude that played on the "She's The One" album did a better job of fitting in with Tom's sound.

Wildflowers has Tom's all time worst song: "Cabin Down Below".

  3. It tells you everything you need to know about everything you need to know about the guitar each and every month.

Cool, so all anyone needs is one issue? :cheers

Does VG have lessons? I've flipped through it several times, but have only noticed their interviews and building/collecting types of articles. Cool magazine, but they should make it smaller. A stack of those would take up the same amount of room as a lazy-boy.

  4. You can't really go wrong with a basic Tele. That's what I've got (Muddy Waters model) and have been thoroughly pleased.

I'm saving my pennies for either an Epiphone Dot (ES 335 copy) or an Ibanez Artcore AS73 (similar to the Dot, but with bound neck and goofier looking F holes).

  5. Got a subscrip a few days back.

Their customer service is excellent (or was a few years ago when I needed them to help me out). I called because I missed an issue, which might not even have been their fault, and they tacked on four free months. And that's on top of the fact that I got a 3 year sub from a special olympics fundraiser for $20, which probably made the magazine LOSE money.

Contrast that with the hassles and accusations you get if you ever call Modern Drummer for help with your subscription...pathetic.

  6. Froggie is Australian and has Wilco withdrawal syndrone.

Glenn acknowledging that they haven't been to Australia (among other places) in a long time would seem to suggest that playing there on their next multi-year touring cycle will be a priority...a cause to celebrate, not be sad.

  7. I always thought his guitar playing on Piper was wicked. :rock

Totally. Hearing "Lucifer Sam" blasting over a huge pa while waiting for a band to play remains one of the most glorious music listening experiences for me.

  8. I was half kidding. So sell them for half price. They should have given away coupons with UnEarthed because lots of us got this thinking it was the LAST recordings of Johnny Cash. How wrong we were.

Oh and as far the the Cashes and Carters...if the proceeds were given directly to the Carter Family Fold or the Birthplace of Country Music Association, I would buy two of these CDs.

    LouieB

You are free to donate as much money as you'd like to the Carters or the BCMA, no cd purchase required.

I don't know anything about Unearthed, but word to the wise: never trust marketing slogans.

I don't think there is anything at all wrong with releasing these recordings. On the contrary, I think the emotions expressed through the singing of a man about to die is about as fascinating as music can get, particularly when the singer is arguably the greatest of all time at expressing emotions through song.

  9. *GASP!* :-O are you saying that there is something wrong with chicago style pizza?

I've never eaten pizza in Chicago, but we have a place in Atlanta that claims to have real Chicago pizza. The pizza in their ad looks like someone threw up their all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner onto a deep dish crust.

  10. Holy Christ, that may be the first time anyone has ever said that on this board. You're wrong, though. The correct answer is "you're listening to it the wrong way."

So, what's the right way? Your way?

For the record, I like him a lot and would love to see him (especially if Marc Ribot is in his band), but I'm not going to the show because Atlanta audiences ruin concerts and I feel like $125 ($65 ticket, plus fees, drinks & tips) would be better spent on another guitar. Tom Waits would probaly agree.

  11. Not to be that guy but I have never once been able to make it through a Tom Waits record. I've tried Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, Bone Machine, Mule Variations, Alice, Closing Time, etc., etc. Dude's voice sounds like a drill to the skull. Is there another one I should try?

No, you've done enough. Give up and write him off. There's no reason to force it.

  12. It was a tad awkward, but not really bad at all.

That's good to hear. I'll probably swap my tubes out pretty soon. I've never done it. Is there anything I need to know in order to avoid electrocution, or can I just unplug the amp and get to work?

  13. I can personally attest to that. My only "complaint" is that the 40W is overpowered for what I need it for so I might look into an inexpensive attenuator like a Weber Mini Mass.

Did you have any trouble replacing the tubes? Many of the reviews at Harmony Central say it is hard to access the tubes due to protective metal plate, or something.

  14. Most importantly, the wine red versions look really cool :cheers

Yeah, it even looks a lot nicer than the photo in the link. In my opinion it's the best looking amp currently on the market (let's just admit it: appearance matters). Great sound, too. I've read that swapping out the stock tubes (Sovteks) with JJ/Teslas makes it sound even better.

  15. I just got a Traynor Custom Valve 20 (YCV20WR) and love it. They sell for something like $500-$600 new, but you can find them on ebay for $350. It's a 15 watt tube amp, but if you need more power they make 50 and 80 watt models. These amps have more features than most other 15 watt tube amps on the market. The 50 watt got Guitar Player magazine's "Editor's Choice" award, for whatever that's worth.

EDIT: As was mentioned above by another poster, they also make a 40 watt model. It might be the 40 watt that got the Editor's Choice award, and not the 50 watt. Sorry, I can't remember exactly.
