  1. 2061 is very much a natural follow-up to the events in 2010- obviously it takes place a half-century later, but HAL, Dave Bowman and the monoliths are still very much in play. Europa is a central setting of the book, and Earth is a very different place since Jupiter was ignited into a mini-sun by the monoliths.

3001 is more of a conceptual piece rather than an obvious sequel (but again, HAL is still hanging around). The premise is that Frank Poole (who was thought to have been killed by HAL in 2001) is recovered from orbit and revived using the advanced technology of the fourth millennium. The book is a chance for Clarke to run wild with his most advanced visions of what humanity and technology might some day accomplish.

    Thanks for the synopses.

Did you enjoy them? Are they worth the read? I'd have to read 2001 again, it's been a long time.

  2. Although he was quite the visionary, he said in his first interview, "I've never predicted the future. Or hardly ever. I extrapolate. Look, I've written six stories about the end of the Earth; they can't all be true!"

I didn't realize there were two more sequels to 2001 and 2010.

  3. Will Detroit ever get someone in there as mayor or on city council who isn't a crooked snake?

I kind of wish I had to drive to work this morning so I could listen to Drew & Mike comment about it.

Is Drew back yet? He was gone, so I stopped listening to the stream for a while.

  4. I have a Garmin that bought when I left MI and moved to VA and year and a half ago. I love it. It has saved my arse many times. That being said, no matter how new the model, they do get stuff just plain wrong. Do not abandon paper maps and a trusty road atlas for long trips. Also, I find it doesn't do so hot in D.C. and you can forget about it when you get into traffic circles.

The models that have their maps updated and the traffic reports cost extra for a subscription, right? How much is it every month?

  5. Just saw No Country on Saturday and loved it. The g.f. said that a lot of the shots reminded her of Sergio Leone.

Besides that, I really liked The Murder of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

The preview for the Daniel-Day Lewis movie about oil looks pretty sweet.

  6. I've never seen someone talk on a phone in a movie theater.

Really? I can't seem to escape this. I could've strangled the bee otch who insisted on talking through American Gangster the other night. I got to the point where out of frustration with her rudeness for not taking her important call out into the lobby that I pretty loudy said, "Are you f*cking kidding me? Take it outside!". I know her rudeness didn't excuse mine, but for what I pay to go see a movie now and then, I at least expect to be able to watch it with little distraction.

Now I wish I could do something about the two old milkshakes who always seem to sit behind me and insist on narrating...

  7. I started shaving IN the shower a few years back and prefer that. I have one of those fog-free suction cup mirrors...

I've been looking at fogless mirrors. They have one here I am considering. I brush in the shower, so I'd like to shave there, too.

Do you have a good brand? I looked at the one they had on sale at Sharper Image, but the reviews all slagged on it, so I'm going to keep on looking.
