Check the Bass Player magazine archive. They featured him just a few months back. I remember it listing his setup, but I've already forgotten what he said. Then again, it may already be outdated. When did he change from Orange to Ampeg?

He played with a semi-hollow double cut bass with one single giant neck humbucker at Schuba's this past weekend. I dont know what model that was, but it was friggin gorgeous.

I'm pretty sure it's in the Wilco book. I can't remember the name of it, though :ermm .

I'd go with a Guild on that. He's big on the Guild sound. After reading more about the Dark Star, I have a powerful lust for one. Too bad it would look horrible on my Jazz bass.

Anyone catch the allusion?

"Stirratt, who has used Ampeg SVTs for as long as he can remember."

He doesn't remember 5 or so years ago when he used an Orange?

Question to the bass players - why do people use cabs with 10 inch speakers for bass? I'd think you'd want a 15 incher...

I wanted to know the same thing. I have no idea what he means about getting midrange through a guitar amp. I've played my J bass through an old Bassman, and even my Hot Rod, and I think it sounds terrible. How on earth does he get his tone through a Twin?

Thanks, this has confirmed my suspisions as to my dream bass setup. I've always loved John's sound and Paul MaCartney's in particulat when it comes to bass...it seems flatwounds are part of the equation.
