John Hardy
Good morning to everyone! I just have a simple question that I hope to get an answer to. Last night, a few friends and I were enjoying a few drinks and listening to some music. The song "Blue Canoe" by Blue Mountain came on, and my friend said that it's a shame that this band broke up. I was unaware that the band dismembered. I had heard a while back that Cary and Laurie parted ways... Is this the reason why Blue Mountain is no longer?
Analogman
There is a great article/interview with them in an issue of No Depression - around the time of Roots that may help you out. I can't recall the issue # - maybe LB would know. For me, these guys are right up there with The Jayhawks, Uncle Tupelo, and Freakwater.
LouieB
There is a great article/interview with them in an issue of No Depression - around the time of Roots that may help you out. I can't recall the issue # - maybe LB would know.I believe it was #3, but it certainly was within the first half dozen ND. I bet the article is in one of the compilations out there. They were good....but long long gone. LouieB
gogo
I believe Cary and Laurie split before the band broke up. No matter how much they wanted to keep the band together, that would have to be a less-than-ideal situation...
Analogman
They did. I have always guessed they decided they no longer wanted to be around each other or some such thing.
truetolife
I'm not sure of the reason, but yeah the band has been split up for quite some time. One of my favorite road trip albums is Blue Mountain's "Dog Days", grab this album if you don't own it! Cary Hudson still records and performs alot in Mississippi. He released an album just this year and I've heard good things about it. The only solo Cary Hudson album I own is "Cool Breeze", its pretty good, but not great. Cary has a myspace page as well, you can hear a few tunes and check out tour dates there.
Buford T. Justice
While I'm sure this has been thorougly discussed somewhere else, what would your recommendations be from the Blue Mountain catalogue?
Analogman
Blue Mountain (1993) Dog Days (1995) Home Grown (1997) Tales of a Traveler (1999) Roots (2001) Tonight It's Now or Never (2002)
Mr. Heartbreak
I would highly recommend Dog Days and Home Grown. If you don't like those, I doubt you'll like the rest.
Analogman
Tales of A Traveler is way different from the first two - production wise. Roots is an album of public domain songs - Tonight. . . is a live album.
Mr. Heartbreak
Tales of A Traveler is way different from the first two - production wise. Roots is an album of public domain songs - Tonight. . . is a live album. You're right. Maybe I should have approached that differently.I'd highly recommend Dog Days and Home Grown, as they show the band at its best.Tales of a Traveler is way different, and not in a good way. The songs on that album worked much better in a live context. For a shot of live BM (an unfortunate abbreviation, eh?), try Tonight It's Now or Never.
LouieB
I would highly recommend Dog Days and Home Grown. If you don't like those, I doubt you'll like the rest. Those are the only two I have. I am interested in the covers album though. Personally I think Dog Days is the better of the two I have. LouieB

Analogman
It does not sound much different from the BM albums. http://www.blackdogrecords.com/#cds looks like he has 3 now
truetolife
I did have "Dog Days" and the solo effort "Cool Breeze" available for download at the Pink Palace, I'll reseed them if anyone's interested.
Analogman
The Hilltops Big Black River I need this one. And I think there is a Blue Mountain album before Dog Days - I'd like to have that. I take it is like those Freakwater cds that are out of print - hard to get.
gogo
The "Lite Brite" album. I'd also like a copy of that one. There's also Holler, before Big Black River. Do you have that one? I'll yousendit both of these to you tonight, if you'd like.

auburn
I would also recommend getting Dog Days and Homegrown. Then get the rest. I'm a huge fan of their work and have everything they've put out and more. Cary's albums are great as well. Bittersweet Blues came out this year and I can't stop listening to it. Cary's a great guy and real down to Earth. Good people...
John Hardy
Thank you all for your gracious replies! I agree that Dog Days and Homegrown are their two best albums. Hearing Black Dog live still gives me chills! As does Jimmy Carter and Let's Go Runnin'. I've only seen BM live once, as they opened for Son Volt circa "Straightaways," And, if it wasn't for Jay closing the Son Volt set with "Chickamauga," BM would have stole the show! But, alas, the Jar Farrar foot stomp was in full force that evening! I'm actually surprised that Jay even played "Chickamauga" because these three or four guys in the front row kept screaming for various Tupelo songs, and you could tell Jay was a little frustrated by them! "PLAY MOONSHINER JAY!!!! WOOOO!! FACTORY BELT!!!! YOU'RE THE MAN, JAY!!!!" Well, I figure everybody left happy that night.
