Inman, who believed he contracted the disease from contaminated food, had been ill for some time and his death Wednesday was not unexpected, the Independent said. Inman's partner of 35 years, Ron Lynch, was "absolutely devastated" by his death, said the actor's manager, Phil Dale. Inman played the campy clothing salesman Mr. Humphries on the television show "Are You Being Served?" from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, starring with Wendy Richard, Molly Sugden, Frank Thornton and Trevor Bannister. He was voted Funniest Man on Television by TV Times readers and also was BBC TV's Personality Of The Year in 1976. "John was one of the wittiest and most inventive actors I have ever worked with," Richard told BBC Radio. "He was a brilliant pantomime dame and an all-round brilliant actor." Dale said Inman should be remembered as a "genuine British comedian."

Edie
I watched each of these episodes numerous times, and he was always the "star" of a show filled with hilarious characters. For many years I had a small B/W TV in my bedroom where I always watched it, and it was a shock to see this show in color.
tugmoose
Thursday in Cleveland Chris Difford dedicated a song to Mr. Inman - can't remember which it was, Cool for Cats, maybe, but it was originally about Benny Hill.
thisyearsgirl
AYBS? is one of my all-time favorite shows. i even own the complete DVD collection. much like raquel's story, i used to watch it on my little b&w tv in my bedroom growing up. i never did get caught for staying up. i can't believe it because i used to have to hide my face in my pillow constantly while i snorted with laughter over some ambiguous comment made by mr. humphries and the rest of the cast. RIP mr. inman. thanks for the laughs and the naughtiness. heaven's a funnier place with you in it.
