H.Stone
Who's been to the Main Lounge, and how is it? I found a couple old posts from when the show was first added, but nothing beyond "Awesome!" and "woo hoo!" sorts of things. To those of you who've seen shows there, how is it? We're considering a road trip for one more show after Milwaukee, and I'm thinking that's our best bet in terms of distance. But how about in terms of the venue itself? We're considering a road trip for one more show after Milwaukee, and I'm thinking that's our best bet in terms of distance. But how about in terms of the venue itself? It's a 1600 person venue. I just saw Ryan Adams there last night. The acoustics aren't great, but they're decent and the UofI does a pretty good job putting on productions and keeping things running smoothly. The room was just remodeled the last year or so, so that's a plus, it's basically a large old-school ballroom style room (so the seating is all flat and on the ground), with a raised stage in front. I was about halfway back and had a pretty good view, I would imagine those behind me less so (as I was right by the soundboard/lights which gave me some extra space/clearance. If you get there earlier for the show though I'm sure it would be pretty good. Iowa City is a nice town, plus you could potentially meet me, I'd say go
jamieverv
IA City is a great town but the Union isn't a good place for a show -- especially if they set up chairs like they did for Ryan Adams. The crowd for RA last night was awful. There wasn't any energy. I had to go to the back of the ballroom just so I could stand up without someone bitching. Also, the sound was really muffled. I listen to music in my living room louder than what was played last night. I'm going to the Wilco show in IA City on the 10th. Heaven help us if they put out those lame chairs again. That might set Tweedy off.
Wilco LP #7
They aren't setting up chairs for Wilco. I talked to the comittee that books shows, and they informed me so. I agree that the Main Lounge is mediocre for shows.
Dr. Steve Brule
Wow, I took pictures when they played there 5 years ago!! Ancient History! I hope they still have the spooky chandeliers!
WilcoOfTheDay
I've seen several shows in the Main Lounge. It is not that great of place and you never know what to expect from the crowd. I recommend getting there early if you want to be close. But Iowa City is a great place. Downtown is really close - basically bars, bars and more bars.
Wilco LP #7
In other news, I guess I'm not the only UIowa student on the board. Greetings.
Wilco LP #7
So I work on the Obama campaign in Iowa City. Apparently we are having some scavenger hunt thingymabobber that, if you win, allows you to meet Wilco. My boss tells me they're huge supporters and are even planning on wearing Obama gear during the show. Sweet. If you want to know more about the contest e-mail my boss Lindsay, lscola@barackobama.com or call her at (319) 230-8415. The office is at 393 E. College street, btw. H.Stone
Thanks for the input. Looks like we'll go--last show of the tour for us, and a much-needed day off on Monday. Hope to meet some of you there.
