Good Old Neon
"Every moment of one's existence one is growing into more or retreating into less. One is always living a little more or dying a little bit." - Norman Mailer And so goes an old lion.... http://www.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/books/11/1...obit/index.html

yermom
Sad day indeed. I picked up a big Mailer bio recently, maybe I'll crack that soon.
darkstar
Sad day.....this was too early for the papers I guess... I read Naked and the Dead so so many years ago.... LouieB Great novel. When I heard about his death I went out today and bought it to re-read. Also got his latest one ( and last) A Castle In The Forest. It's about a demon that disguises as an SS stormtrooper and how he influences Hitler as a youth. That ought to be pretty wild.
Hippycat
Only read a couple of his books, The Naked and the Dead and Tough Guys Don't Dance. Got about half way through Harlot's Ghost before giving up. Naked was certainly the best of those three. Bad year for writers - Vonnegut dieing earlier this year saddened me a lot more. Excellent quote from Tough Guys, that I printed out years and years ago and keep on a cork board near my computer: I then wrote a longer note which I found in my pocket the next day. For some reason I gave it a title: RECOGNITION: "The perception of the possibility of greatness in myself has always been followed by the desire to murder the nearest unworthy."Then I underlined the next sentence: "It is better to keep a modest notion of oneself!"
