Reflectedinthemoon
So, as i have mentioned before, i recently purchased a Vox AC15. And now i'm looking for good spare/replacement tubes. i hear good things about EHX's tubes (and theyre cheap too!), but i read on one site that their EL84s are too big to fit in AC15s. Anyone know if this is true? or have any other suggestions? THANKS!
In a little rowboat
too big as in how? Too long, wide?? That doesnt sound right to me but im not intimately familiar with the ac15...the pins absolutely should be the same size...Ive not been a huge fan of EH tubes, but they are better than many j j
Reflectedinthemoon
supposedly they are slightly larger in diameter... the glass tube in other words. i haven't been able to get a whole lotta info from EHX or Vox. This info comes from one of the independent Tube Depot type online sites.
jff
A lot of people rave about JJ tubes. I put a set in my Traynor YCV15 and I noticed an improvement over the stock tubes. That probably would have been true no matter what replacement tubes I used, though. Anyway, here's their link: http://www.eurotubes.com/ If you click on "Shop Online" you'll see that they have full retube kits for most of the well known amp makers, including Vox. You can probably order individual tubes from them, also. I hope this douesn't sound like I'm shilling for them. I have no connection with them at all, other than being a satisfied customer. DewieCox
For el84's I'd go JJ's every time.
aegert
JJ's are really good. as are EHX but based on how hot AC amps run yopu will wear them out pretty fast... If you want great tone you need to get stuff made long ago. tungstram, the new mullard reissues held up for me but are heavy sounding... If you have a real ac30 bust out the wallet and get gold lion or old mullards, bugleboy. low numbers matched.. they sound sick .. do it for recording. by JJ ei or mullard (ehx release) for live use.. Atticus
For EL84s, I've recently run new Mullards (only about $18.95/piece) and some Preferred Series 7189s ($40/piece) in my Goodsell Super 17. Both sound great. No issues. Still haven't settled on a favorite 12ax7 yet. Currently have a JJ ECC803S in V1 and it seems to sound pretty good. Going to try a Svetlana soon.
