macramaniac
Does anyone have any idea how to achieve the guitar effects in Via Chicago. of course Im speaking of the moment (especially live) when a "movement" comes in and out of the song. I know there is a lot of banging going on but where does that wall of sound come from? Ive been playing with a Gretsch hollow body into a Fender Bassman. I try to get a clean acoustic sound and then stomp on a cheap boss distortion pedal (turned up too high) for my version. Any suggestions? The presence of that rolling sound really makes the song for me.
WaronWar
I know Nels is most likely using some of his wonderful fuzz pedals and I have seen him use (I believe) springs while playing below the bridge of his Fender Jazzmaster in order to get that sound. I could be wrong though, but I think that's what I have seen.

cooperissup3r
someone just tell me how nels' gets that tone playing the melody of Via Chicago....the clean tone before he overdrives it. it's so expansive for a guitar...unless it's mikael or pat on something other than a guitar.
