GtrPlyr
Looking at this list I realize how many I haven't listened to in quite some time. Also realize how many have completely fallen out of favor over the year. Nevertheless a few of those still standout as excellent records.
lizish
second thought, there is no Andre Ethier or Rizdales, so it is indeed the worst. list. ever.

Yeah, I certainly have not heard them all especially things like Silver Mt Zion or french language discs.A couple years ago I ended up loving the Malajupe record, only hearing about it from the nonimations, so I'll at least do a myspace on them all. Skipping City and Colour though. I could happily never hear them again.

Kalle
I'm actually quite happy about the list other than the fact that the Acorn got ripped off, they totally deserved to be on there. Sadly the one album on the list that I want to win (Plants And Animals) has no shot as there is no way they are going to pick another band from Montreal from the same label as Patrick Watson, no less. Holy Fuck doesn't have much of a shot as again, there is no way the most prestigious music award in Canada is going to go to a band called Holy Fuck. Caribou doesn't have much of a shot because of Final Fantasy two years prior. To put the Weakerthans and Stars on there as the "veterans" I feel is a bit skewed. I have virtually every album on the long list as well as seen almost everyone on the list live and the Constantines album and live show surpasses most of them, plus I think that they are one of the most underrated bands in Canada. Essentially those to won't win because they have the largest fan base as well as "don't need the money". Again, Kathleen has no shot because people will see her as too big and doesn't need the money, could be wrong though. Shad and Black Mountain are on the list for diversity really. SO, the people that I think have a legit shot are really just Basia and Two Hours Traffic. I think they're going to lean to giving to a girl this year and she needs the money more than Kathleen and Two Hours Traffic write some nice pop tunes and are from P.E.I., a nice change from Toronto or Montreal. GtrPlyr
Out of that list it's the Weakerthans for me. The Kathleen Edwards is pretty good too. I still haven't checked out the Basia record so I can't comment. There's been a lot of hype for her here in Canada, I really should check her out. I'm a bit surprised that Kevin Drew - Spirit If... didn't make the long list. I remember that came out about the same time the Stars record did.
lizish
So there is an unofficial Polaris concert tonight, meant to celebrate the fact that Basia and Shad both got nominated and that this relatively small city is the only place with 2 nominations this year. It's taking place at the absolute best venue in town and I really want to go. Except neither Basia or Shad have lived here for a while. Neither Basia or Shad will be in attendance and of the 4 bands, two of them make me want to vomit and rip my ears from my head. And the two absolutely terrible bands, well, they are the headliners. 2 steps forward, 2 steps back for the local music scene. These are the two steps back: http://www.myspace.com/thejoys http://www.myspace.com/chrischown (note the spelling mistake in Chown's Bio. I'm not really one to talk about spelling, but holy fuck, you're trying to make a living as a musician and you don't proof your bio? Unbelievable.) and the good openers:http://www.myspace.com/alexandrakrakushttp://www.myspace.com/twominutemiracles Uggghhhhhh. Sorry to vent.
lizish
Echo songwriting prize sort of matches the Polaris. http://www.echoprize.ca/echoen/index.jsp Great bunch of songs: Veda Hille, Weakerthans, Wintersleep, Sandro Perri.... no idea which to vote for. lizish
My band opened for the Two Minute Miracles earlier this year, good band! Kalle - if you can - get to know Andy Magoffin. He produced the Constantines, Royal City, Rock Plaza Central, Nathan Lawr, Great Lakes Swimmers, Rizdales, ... in short almost every good Canadian act in the last decade. His recording studio is here in London, by the Labatt's Brewery, and I have never ever seen one place with so much vintage musical equipment. I actually like seeing him solo, cause it makes him into this strange one man band with like 12 pedals, 3 mics, and all kinds of strange instruments and amps. http://www.exclaim.ca/musicschool/whereiplay.aspx?csid1=65 http://www.myspace.com/andymagoffin He's a super super guy and good friend. He's also good buddies with Phil Klygo at weewerk records (OX, 2 minute miracles, GLS, Elliot Brood etc etc) , meaning if Andy likes it, Phil will give it a listen. And hey, Ox is from Sudbury, so they must not think that all of Northern Ontario is a restricted gene pool.
Kalle
I dunno if I posted it here or not but I put on a house concert with Nathan Lawr and Kate Maki, super awesome people and definitely good friends to have!
lizish
I'm jealous. How much did something that cost?
Kalle
Nothing for us really, just the goodness of our hearts lol. They played the local bar in town Lop Lops about six months ago, where pretty much everything good plays (this month alone we have Hayden and Jason Collett, just to name the big ones) and they had a pretty dismal turnout so they asked us if we'd be interested in doing a house concert as we've had quite a few other artists play and stay at our house (Fred Eaglesmith, can't remember most of the other ones as I was too young). We didn't pay them anything to come here they just got all the money at the door ($10 a ticket and roughly 45 people, so $450 isn't bad but, it definitely be more for them) and they made a whack of money off of their merch, practically sold out of vinyl. So they came out of here with a good chunk of money which we were all pleased about, and we came out with an awesome night and some new friends! Nathan was telling me his new record is going to be produced by Don Kerr (Rheostatics, Ron Sexsmith) which is an awesome step for him and I really think that might be the push he needs to get as big as he should be, he just writes plain good tunes and it just perplexes me why he is not bigger. Kate's new record is getting some pretty big press (4/5 in Mojo) and I mean her album is produced by Howe Gelb of Giant Sand so that helps matters lol, again she should be bigger than she is. They are just super cool people and have tons of awesome stories (staying at Neko Case and Ryan Adams' house and all those crazy things), I guess they'll be coming back to the Sault eventually and they're going to play the coffee shop with my band opening so that will be cool (we're opening for BA Johnston, Vancougar and Mt. Royal this month how awesome is that?!).
lizish
wow. That sounds great. Totally agree that Lawr and Maki should be bigger than they are. Oh - and don't forget us little people as you snort the cocaine off the groupie's chest in the coming years. Okay?
lizish
from Michael Barclay's Blog. Penultimate Polaris post today. But first, I'd like to alert you all to an Ottawa oddsmaker's take on everyone's chances. These do not represent the opinions of Radio Free Canuckistan, and are intended for entertainment purposes only. That said, place your bets! Black Mtn- 2.5:1Basia Bulat- 3:1Caribou- 3:1Kathleen Edwards- 4:1Holy Fuck- n/a (they are going to win), but I will bet anyone if you give me at least 3:1Plants and Animals- 2:1Shad- 4:1Stars- 4:1Two Hours Traffic- 3:1The Weakerthans- 4:1 He's right. Given the extra boost the Prime Minister has given to the Holy Fuck cd, it will win. Who knew that Stephen Harper had such great taste in Music.
Kalle
Caribou is theeee winner, little weird I didn't expect him to win but it's still a good choice nonetheless I think.
lizish
oh well. Funny and extremely condescending article from the Guardian as only the brits can do: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/....awards.mercury And the best Canadian album of the past twelve months is? An album written and recorded by a man, with a British passport, in his Islington bedroom. British-Canadian Dan Snaith - the electronic eccentric known as Caribou - won the CA$20,000 (
