There was just enough of the essay on the web to remind of this incident. The former vicar of the nice Episcopalian church up the road from me brought a shit rain down upon himself back in 1991 when, either just before or just after the First Gulf War started, he delivered a sermon basically saying it was un-Christian to advocate or participate in war and God was a higher authority than the president. To illustrate his point, he took down the U.S. flag to the right of the altar, folded it up and placed it under the altar. Shit. Rain. A lot of people could not get their heads around it, and most Episcopalians are pretty left to begin with. The priest also caused problems with the local Catholics by calling them on their anti-gay stance.
