jcarlile1
Did nobody in Chitown hit this show? Would love to get a rundown. Autumn Defense opened... I was there... Autumn Defense sounded really nice, but the crowd near me persisted in talking throughout, pissed me off. Mark and Gary were great, did most of the new record, plus lots of old faves.... Saw Louie there...
LouieB
I was there... Autumn Defense sounded really nice, but the crowd near me persisted in talking throughout, pissed me off. Mark and Gary were great, did most of the new record, plus lots of old faves.... Saw Louie there...Yes and I saw you too.... Mark and Gary were great, low key, happy looking and told some funny stories. They sounded older but wiser and the new songs, while not quite as thrilling as the Jayhawks material, were all good. I had a great time, since the last time they were in town I was in the hospital and missed them entirely. Gary came out at the end and mingled with the fans. The Autumn DEfense were good, but sort of snoozy, which I think accounted for the constant talking during their set. Up close the audience was quite, but in back the roar became quite loud by the end of the set. Pat now has a big old full beard, for all those who care. LouieB
froggie
this is off topic, but when Jeff played at Park West in 2000, he opened both shows with "this aint no lounge ax".... i've always wondered whether he's saying good or bad about the venue, compared to the then recently defunct lounge ax??? calvino
Park West (a music club) is completely different from what Lounge Ax (a bar that had a stage) was. I'm sure Tweedy made that Lounge Ax statement because it was his wife's club, he played there a shit load of times, and it had recently closed. I don't think he was knocking the Park West. Park West is a great venue, as was Lounge Ax. But it's kinda of an apple and orange thing. You can't really compare the two.

You can't really compare the two.Park West is not now, nor was it ever a favorite of mine, despite seeing some great shows back in the day when they actually did book good stuff. It has always had a classic night club vibe (intentionally) with tables that are reserved for those willing to put out the extra cash. It used to be really swanky and sort of snooty. It is a gutted movie theater with mirror bar and lots of other mirrors and expansive drinks. It is a much much bigger venue than Lounge Ax, Lounge Ax was a rock club with no tables, usually crowded low ceiling and grungy bathrooms...a classic bar type club, not a night club.
