Anybody live in Oklahoma?

Recommended Posts

So...

Would it be a good idea to move down there, say, this summer?

I've kind of got my heart set on being a Sooner, but I'm trying to gauge how viable that might be in the near future.

What are housing costs like? Is the traffic bad? Are there jobs available for a college kid that's used to earning $12 an hour?

What do you like and dislike about the area/Oklahoma in general?

I really would like to get out of Milwaukee to re-focus and get my priorities straight. There are too many distractions here (mainly people, especially my family), and I think that transplanting myself will give me a chance to unload some stuff and start a simpler, more worthwhile life.

Also, please give me any advice that I have not yet solicited (but may need).

I currently live in South OKC and have been here for about 9 years. Norman is a great city of about 100k. Great college town, decent food, actually borderline progressive for this part of OK. As far as plans after college, the economy here is actually pretty stable. good housing market and low cost of living. I was born in OK and have lived here most of my life so i'm probably biased but I think it's a great place to live and plan on raising my kids here.

Hmm! I like what you've said, so far... :yes

Is it easy to get around without a car? I'm contemplating ditching the car when I move, unless there's a severe lack in public transportation...

What are popular entertainment-type things to do in the area?

I grew up in OKC and have fond memories of it. Most of my family still lives there and they're happy with it. As far as I know, things have only gotten better since I left, with the fancy downtown improvements and all.

i live in Edmond, which is OKC's north suburb, but think Norman would be a great place to live... nice college town and like Saut said, borderline progressive for OK! very friendly people, living expenses are cheap, Norman has a nice club that gets some great acts (Blitzen Trapper is next week, they've had Hold Steady, Spoon, etc...), and a good record store, too... nice local restaurants and shops in the area... it's also got the chains, and big box stores, but it's not overwhelming... not sure about jobs, but OK as a whole has been doing fairly well as far as not losing as many jobs as the rest of the country... as far as traffic goes, it's not bad at all, but i don't think public transportation is all that great, but maybe Norman has something better since it's a college town... OKC gets some pretty good shows also, with downtown OKC not that far from Norman, where there's a larger arena and a few smaller music clubs... for sports, we've got the NBA Thunder, baseball AAA Redhawks (farm team of the TX Rangers), and AA hockey... i've lived here all my life and have never really considered moving away...

Your saying good things about OK is getting me super excited about living there!

The more I think about it, too, I figure out more dumb things to ask about...

Are the streets around OKC and Norman relatively bike-friendly?

Do the towns sprawl a bit, or are they more compact?

Are there summer festivals? (I have a penchant for milling around in crowds...)

What are the winters like?

bike-friendly - OKC no, Norman not great, but better... this is a very car-driven area - public trans. isn't that great - people around here just like to drive their cars! it's a very sprawling area - i think the OKC area is in the top 5 in the country as far as number of square miles...

there's some festivals here and there... the OKC arts festival in April, and a few others scattered around in the spring/summer... i think Norman may have a few in the spring/summer - a jazz festival, a medieval fair... and i'm sure the university does some things too...

the seasons here are wacky... 3 days ago it was 88, and it wouldn't have surprised me at all for it to be 38 the next day or two after that... winters are generally mild, but can get cold (teens) and icy with a little snow here and there... it's the ice that's hard to deal with... and summers - it's not uncommon for us to have 20-30+ days of 100
