froggie
i just got home. first time i've seen and heard him solo. he was the support act for the re-formed Laughing Clowns with Ed Kuepper. he played for about 40 mins and it didnt really grab me at all. bring on the lap steel on Airline to heaven anyday!. it seemed like end of Handshake Drugs the whole time (like one song that never ended). he did some cool tactics like acting like he was about to eat his guitar. and there was this cylinder thing the he put against the strings and put his mouth to it to make more weird noises, and he kept flicking a switch and pedals i met him earlier in the afternoon and he said he loves the country. it was part of the Melbourne international jazz festival. still it was great to get part of a Wilco fix. it was recorded but i'll have to ask my friend if he wants it put out for free cause he's a strict trader. i took photos that i can put up soon, though. Ed was great!. for anyone familiar with the Laughing Clowns, the setlist was: everything is tnot the fault of minoritieslaughing clownscome one come alltheme from mad flies, mad fliesknife in the headeverything that flies is not a birdclown towncrying dancecollapse boardetrenally yoursthats the way it goessong of joynew bully in town
mountain bed
Glad to hear you got to see Nels & Ed, Mende! When I saw The NC Singers last year it was easily one of the best shows I saw all year. But I am a big fan of his stuff.
lamradio
Glad to hear you got to see Nels & Ed, Mende! When I saw The NC Singers last year it was easily one of the best shows I saw all year. But I am a big fan of his stuff. Same here, one of the greatest shows I've seen period.. But I can understand how it might not have been your bag... When I saw him with the singers last year, my wife couldn't really handle the avante-garde chaos, effects, loudness, noise, so she actually left for the better part of the show. And many people commented "this is a little too much for me".. But I LOVED it, and was in complete aw the entire show.
Three dollars and 63 cents
I'm planning to head down to NYC to see him at the Stone next weekend (if I don't completely lose my mind and decide to go see him and Carla play in LA the following week ). I saw with Norton Wisdom last fall, but I've never seen him completely solo. I'm interested to see/hear how much he'll play from Coward, especially since I imagine it would be difficult for him to play a lot of it unless he programmed loops ahead of time. That thing he yells and sings into is a Mega Mouth. If I remember right, it's actually a toy. They used to be all over the place in the 80s and 90s, but they're not around anymore. Nels's experimental work is difficult stuff, and it's certainly not for everybody, but he's mentioned to me a few times how much he appreciates the Wilco fans who are "brave enough" (his term, not mine) to at least come out once and give it a try. I'm guessing this might be the only one of his Australian shows that will be recorded, since I know Bill Frisell doesn't allow taping.
