Sky Blue Sky to me is the epitome of what I don't want from a Wilco album. "You Are My Face", for exampel, is sub-Cat Stevens soft rock that degenerates into a sub-Lynyrd Skynyrd boogie jam, devoid of any interesting instrumentation. It's pretty gray and bland to me.

Wilco The Album is full of interesting instrumental choices, and maybe it is too similar to past Wilco albums, but I think it's a much more intelligent album than Sky Blue Sky.

Neither album holds upto the best Wilco has to offer imo (Summerteeth, YHF), but of the two, Wilco (The Album) towers above Sky Blue Sky.

I am totally on board with every one of these statements.

Those of you who were disappointed with Wilco the Album, and who feel it's nowhere near as good as what came before ... well, that's exactly how I feel about Sky Blue Sky. I wanted to like it, but actively disliked most of it. The beginning of Side With the Seeds is one of the worst JT vocal performances ever; Shake It Off, Hate It Here and Walken are absolutely terrible to my ears; and I could also live without ever hearing Impossible Germany again. The only things I liked okay on it were Either Way and the title track/reprise of Far, Far Away.

Wilco The Album may be all over the map, but it's a map I like pretty well: the title track has that chiming reference back to Can't Stand It, Bull Black Nova is a great Spiders meets Via Chicago rave-up, and I actually kind of like those pop songs everybody seems to hate, even You And I. Does the thing beat YHF or Summerteeth? Well, no, but what the hell does?
