none of these things are going to take food out of your baby's mouth, or keep your kid from going to college, or raise your taxes or any of those fears that people have about change.

 

I'm continually surprised at how easy it is to make smarter choices. I sat down a few months ago with my recycling and went through all my usual junk mailings from places I've purchased things online, took about fifteen minutes visiting all the sites and unsubscribing to their mailings, and haven't received almost any junk mail since, aside from the weekly circular. I stop at the grocery store on my bike home from work two or three times a week instead of one big shop - saves me on gas, and also saves me from buying too much crap food like ice cream and soda, simply on account of space.

 

My hardest challenge has been my recycling containers. I tried to use white plastic garbage containers (instead of paper bags every week) just like the city website says I can - I even got the stickers to put on the containers! - and twice the city has "recycled" my containers. I called both times and they apologized, but for now I've gone back to piggy-backing on my neighbors' recycling so I don't have to use paper backs.

 

Most of the blowback, I think, is from people who don't want the government "interfering with their lives." Why saving money is a bad kind of interference I'm not sure, but a lot of people realy cling to their ability to make their own damned choices instead of making the smarter choice.
