Electronic Adapters/Transformers in Europe

Recommended Posts

My wife and I are planning to fly from the U.S. to Italy and France next year, and of course will be bringing all manner of electronic gadgets with us: cell phone & charger, digital camera & charger, hair dryer, hair straightening iron, camcorder, etc., etc. Does anyone have experience they can share about what sort of adapters or transformers are needed to plug in all these things without frying them? Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving to all!

some electric/tronic devices have a current switch built in to go between 120 (US) and 220 (Europe) volts. Usually these are things that you might normally be expected to travel with (hair driers, electric razors, especially if they are travel models, and laptops which i think do it automatically). This does not include mobile phones. If this is the case and there is a voltage switch then all you need is a plug adaptor.

For the things that don't have the switch, you'll need a voltage converter, which usually comes along with a set of plug adaptors. It's been a while, but if memory serves me they should (or at least used to) run around 20-30 dollars.

My (Mac) laptop, iPhone, and (Canon) camera battery charger are all able to accommodate European voltage automatically. No switch involved. Since I made use of the hair dryers (or air dried) wherever we stayed, I only needed a really light, cheap plug adapter. But I know most women aren't as cavalier when it comes to the hair routine. ;)

There's a little information here.

I charged all out stuff just by using an adaptor on the plug when we were in the States and had no appreciable problems. I am sure you can pick up adaptors in the airport prior to travelling anyway and hotels are almost always ready and able to help as well.

Enjoy Italia cos it's bleedin' great. France and me don't get on at all.
