Jeff Tweedy – Faraday Festival, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Barcelona, 3rd of July 2010

Hola everybody!

What a beautiful show we had last night. Jeff played wonderfully and he seemed to be pretty relaxed, joking between songs about some “distractions” that happened during the set. The audience (to my great surprise) was really good!!! The first rows with fans who cheered and sang to the songs and the rest of the crowd quite surrendered to him, wondering how a guy with just a guitar could make such a perfect concert! I also realize now that he played all the songs I had requested on the Wilco site!!! ;o) There weren’t that many requests live, though, something funny, he stopped to change one of the guitars before one of the songs and someone in the audience shouted “Take it Easy” to which he replied that he didn’t know that song, and that had not written it!

So this is the setlist:

Spiders (Kidsmoke)

Remember the Mountain Bed

I’ll Fight

Hummingbird

Please Be Patient with Me

One Wing

I am Trying to Break Your Heart

Either Way

Jesus, etc.

The Ruling Class

I’m Always in Love

Via Chicago

Someday Some Morning

Handshake Drugs

Simple Twist of Fate

How To Fight Loneliness

California Stars

The Late Greats

Theologians

A Shot in the Arm

----

Wilco (the Song)

I'm the Man Who Loves You

So this is how it all went… Jeff said “hola” and that it was his first show by the beach (the venue, or more specific, the garden, was at the top of a hill with views to the beach below). He asked how Spain had finished on the World Cup and congratulated us for wining the match. Most of the people didn’t know until then that Spain had won so it was real fun…

In one of the songs (can’t remember which one now) he messed the guitar part and laughing told us to imagine Nels playing it! He couldn’t believe that he had forgotten how to play a song he’d written… And among the strange things happening: it seems that there was a dog barking in the distance (at least he had heard him during some songs, and was worried if something had happened as he couldn’t hear it anymore); there was a song were the lights started to come and go, distracting him a bit… Also, a series of fireworks in the town started to sound when he was playing “Via Chicago” but ended up in a huge explosion during “Someday…” that made him say afterwards that they should have finished a song earlier and it would have been really perfect!! As you can see he was in a really “holiday” mood and nothing was affecting him!!

By the end of Wilco (the song) he finished singing: Wilco… J-Lo… Nick Lowe… love you baby! (Nick Lowe is playing tonight in the same Festival). He also mentioned that his family was travelling with him (and that his kids were creating havoc in the village…) and dedicated “I'm the Man Who Loves You” to his wife. And he finished saying “Thanks for having US”, which he immediately corrected and changed with a smile to “thanks for having ME”… ;o)

Musically, he sounded brilliant, as expected!!! It was the second time I’ve seen him playing solo and, again, it was as good as seeing him with Wilco! It was a lovely show!!!

Thanks for the setlist and show report! Sounds like a really nice night. I was in Barcelona a couple of weeks ago--I wish the timing had worked out better as it had to be a beautiful setting for the show.

Please Be Patient with Me

:blink Wow, I don't think I've seen this on a setlist since....the Residency. Have I? That's a rarity I'd love to hear again.

A bit OT here, but wow, how weird is it to play Please Be Patient With Me as the first song of a show? You have to wonder if there's a story behind that--like maybe he wasn't feeling well that night and wanted to set expectations.
