Colin Moulding of XTC

Recommended Posts

Colin is often sorely overlooked for the more-prolific Andy. But, fact is, that Colin is every bit the brilliant songwriter and musician as Mr. Partridge. And, to prove it, I am attaching this link to a mix of nothing but songs that Colin wrote.

SURPRISE!

Nice. I don't agree with the "every bit" sentiment, but his tunes are almost always a welcome breather from Andy's blustery thuds of emotion. I think Frivolous Tonight may be the only song (or thing?) I would ever consider a 'guilty pleasure' - it's so corny but I love it.

With all the talk around Andy's Fuzzy Warbles releases (deservedly so I may add) the last few years, I figured it was about time XTC's bassist and secondary singer/songwriter Colin Moulding received some props. His bass playing, a cross between Paul McCartney and James Jamerson and his way of turning a vocal melody were key components in the evolution of the band over the course of 25+ years. XTC, a band known for their long-standing critical success may be no more as in November 2006, Partridge told the press that Moulding no longer had any interest in writing, performing or even listening to music. Partridge said he would not continue XTC without Moulding, and therefore has been forced to regard XTC "in the past tense."

yeah, i would see Colin as a good but not great songwriter, certainly not to the level of Andy. he's kinda like the Harrison to Andy's Macca/Lennon. still, as you noted above, he can certainly churn out some outstanding material.

Harrison = one of my favorite songwriters of all time, and his best material is definitely equal to that of his more-prolific counterparts. So, yeah, I can see that analogy.

We just disagree on this matter of degrees.

He did write some great tunes. What always stood out to me was his bass playing on either his songs or Andy's. You can hear it on their earliest records and you can't say "The Mayor of Simpleton" bassline isn't one of the coolest in their catalog.
