Wilco -- 20/9/10, Düsseldorf, Germany

Recommended Posts

It's pretty late, so I don't know how much of a review this will be, but I'll try my best for the handful who care. Quite a different mood from the festivals and general admission shows of the past couple days.

The Tonhalle was a very nice, almost circular auditorium with a towering ceiling which, judging by the posters in the lobby, mostly hosts classical concerts. Accordingly, it seemed that a fair bit of the set was tailored to take advantage of the immaculate acoustics. Songs such as the acoustic Spiders, Country Disappeared and Everlasting Everything (which was played live by the full band for just the second time :yes) really shined.

Crowd-wise, it was pretty typically German. Jeff made the comment it was the most polite audience that the band has played to in a long time. At the end of the main set, everyone got up to applaud the band and remained standing through the encore so that was something.

What else? Theologians and Poor Places were both on the printed setlist, but not played. I'm A Wheel was not on the printed list. And the support act was a very pregnant Hanne Hukkelberg, a Norwegian electro-folk singer.

I think that's what I've got for now. Help me out, if I've forgotten something significant!

Were the chimes in full use for EE? Love the rolling wave snares in that one, too.

Have a great time on your Germany run with the Poets! :cheers

Yay Poets! Scary how many people I knew at the show tonight...:pirate

To answer your question, pretty sure the chimes were more or less present. I dig Nels' little psychedelic outro on that one as well and you could hear it really clearly at Tonhalle, so that was cool. :thumbup

The Tonhalle was a first for me in terms of it being a seated Wilco venue and this had its pluses particularly the civilised setting, great sightlines and superb sound befitting a concert hall primarily used for classical music and its minuses which for me was the impact on atmosphere of us all sitting a little way off the stage and I didn't get the impression it warmed up really till 'Shot In The Arm' which must have been about an hour into the show. Certainly it was very different compared to say Live Music Hall in Koeln or even the last show I saw in Eindhoven. Given the choice, I'd definitely plump for a standing venue next time but it was an interesting and as always enjoyable experience in the company of this superb band
