perfectecho
Did everyone get Nels' current mailer, about the upcoming shows and stuff? I'm reading the piece on the upcoming Stained Radiance show in CT. Seeing how that's not far from my home, I get interested, then see the piece on free tickets to anyone who mails in the correct answer first. Being a neurotic Nels fan and having scoured every bit of his website in the past, I quickly email the answer... and won! I get the email from Dennis all excited, and as i'm writing him back, glance over at the calendar, and there, right in the box next to January 7th is a big number one drawn there. Saturday is my daughter's first birthday party (not her birthday, i'm not that bad). And I know that her awesome Alice in Wonderland theme isn't going to be done by my wife alone (since our son was born 5 years back, the birthday party has been an escalating game of one-ups since then, she just fell into the habit with us) So against the wishes of two of my friends and the coworker next to me, i passed on the tickets, let another neurotic Nels fan grab them... Garrrrgggghhhh!

Beltmann
Similar things have happened to me several times. Once I turned down an invitation to serve on a film festival jury (Milwaukee) because it would have required being gone the weekend of my daughter's first birthday. No regrets, though; I was able to catch up with the films later, but you can't catch up with a missed milestone.
Sweet Papa Crimbo
No...you are not a bad fan. You are a good dad. Deal with it...you are going to miss a lot more stuff in you years of fatherhood. But you won't miss it at all.
