When & Why did guitar duo become Nels solo on Impossible Germany?

Recommended Posts

When did the famous 'guitar duel' on Impossible Germany become a solo performance by Nels? In Charlotte, right after that record release, Jeff and Nels played to each other as they seem to do on the record. In two shows since then (last night in Raleigh and two years ago in Cary, NC), Nels plays that break alone. It's even referred to by people as a guitar duel or duet between Tweedy and Cline. I can't find an answer in any interviews. Anyone know?

Thanks for trying to answer my question. I hope this link below works. The sound isn't great, but it shows Jeff and Nels definitely playing together what I remember as the guitar break in Impossible Germany, but maybe I have the wrong song? I'm sure I've read articles where its referred to as a duet or duel.

I've never heard it the way described in the initial post. On record and live, Jeff and Pat are playing harmonized leads -- not octaves -- while Nels solos.

I noticed that Jeff and Pat were playing to each other last night while Nels was shredding.

as far as i know, even on the record it's always been a nels solo. I mean jeff and pat are playing the same lines, in different octaves i believe, but it's always just nels floating underneath them with his guitar solo,
