Wilco — 3/11/12, Zagreb, Croatia (Zagrebački velesajam, Paviljon 9)

Well, an 11-song encore...that's how you make a lot of new fans in a place you've never played before, I guess! Hell of a Croatian debut. :cheers

I have to admit, I had my doubts when they moved the venue for the show from a club to a random hangar-like building that's part of a vast trade fair complex (apparently one of the largest 11 fairgrounds in the world). Suffice it to say that the place was pretty big, and I guess it hadn't hosted a concert in recent memory. Also, there was virtually no way that the sound was going to be pristine in that place. I'm sure the Wilco sound team did its best, and almost certainly the sound was better a bit further back from where I stood. Given all that, I think the band was pleasantly surprised to find a pretty enthusiastic audience, one that had been waiting for them to play in their country for quite a while.

Jeff didn't have a whole lot to say during the show, other than hello and thank you (the latter of which had been phonetically written on his setlist, 'Hvallah Vum'), preferring instead to pack the music in as much as possible. ˝We've got a plane to catch,˝ he said at one point, ˝but it's not until tomorrow.˝ As a result, we got 30 songs in 2 hours, 19 minutes to close out this run of European shows on a high note.

Hand it to the band, they´re professionals in the best sense of the word. At the end of a long tour, on a night they could have tuned out somewhat before an audience that perhaps didn´t know them all that well, they played their longest show of the tour and played it well. Not that I didn´t know this before, but it´s shows like this that really make you realize what a great rhythm section John and Glenn are. For people who haven´t seen them live that often, of course Nels and Pat tend to draw the most immediate attention with their various theatrics. But the more shows you see, you truly begin to appreciate how John and Glenn not only hold everything together but add to the overall group dynamic (which isn´t always the case in every band).

No great surprises, setlist-wise, but the band did lengthen the show a bit by deciding to add Red-Eyed and Blue>I Got You in the encore, neither of which was on the printed list. Radio Cure´s a song I never get tired of hearing, so I guess that´s what qualified for a nugget tonight, though I heard they also soundchecked Too Far Apart. Oh well...can´t have them all. :ohwell

Anyway, I could probably prattle on longer. But that's pretty much the nuts-and-bolts version. Hopefully some other people who were there will chime in with some of their thoughts... :thumbup

This man has fierce style with words in way that has longest piece of chalk for fine review by far.

Welfare!

P.S. Welfare to Wilco from the Europeans indeed - as Mr Benny and Mr Bjorn have stated in plain fact from famous song: Thank You For The Music!

P.P.S. Do not take Danish as the typical ones in this European regard! Please have the understanding on this point!

Did any local band open the show?

No, there wasn't a support act for this show. I think Scarlett O'Hanna, who had opened most of the dates on this European run, was originally slated to support in Zagreb as well but I guess she couldn't make it. So this turned into "An Evening With Wilco" perhaps helping to account for the longer setlist...

Great ending of a fantastic european tour as it seems. Thanks for reporting, Paul, always a pleasure to read :yes It was great fun to hang out with all you guys! Hope to see you all next time. :wave

And great to see you as always, Heike! Definitely hope to see you next time as well!
