Nick Lowe w/ The Autumn Defense @ The Continental Club (Houston, TX)

Recommended Posts

Just got back from the show. I'm terrible at keeping/remembering setlists, but suffice to say, Nick and his band were 'EFFING FANTASTIC. The Autumn Defense were awesome, too. Just John and Pat, but they had the room under control and played great, with Pat taking a turn behind the keyboard for at least one tune.

Nick Lowe played great versions of:

(again, not a definitive setlist)

I Live on a Battlefield

I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock & Roll)

Lately I've Let Things Slide

Has She Got a Friend

Cruel to be Kind

Without Love

Ragin' Eyes

Has She Got a Friend?

I Trained Her to Love Me

Raining

Sensitive Man

I Read a Lot

House For Sale

Tower of Strength

(What's So Funny About) Peace, Love and Understanding

Alison

Meant to add that I read somewhere that Nick's longtime keyboard player, Geraint Watkins (who is great), has been called the Welsh Jerry Lee Lewis. Funny, though, I thought that moniker already belonged to a denizen of these parts...ahem Mr. Dowdall. :wave ;)

Whole lot of shaking going on over here indeed. Glad you like Geraint - Cardiff (or very near Cardiff) boy. I think I posted a YouTube link to him doing Only A Rose with Nick a while back (forget which thread exactly). Hope Nick gives him a few minutes in the spotlight on this tour if you are following him around.

Geraint is terrific. Saw Nick and the band at the Sydney Opera House a few weeks ago. Geraint played a great opening solo set and also got the spotlight to play 'Only A Rose' midway through Nick's set. What a voice (obviously a Welsh thing!).

They did "Only A Rose" tonight in Dallas as well, with just Nick and Geraint, as the first song of the encore. They hadn't done it either of the previous two nights, but perhaps because it was the last night of the tour, they added it. And I'm so glad they did.

Saw Geraint open for Nick a couple of years back at the Bell House in Brooklyn and he was sublime that evening as well. Have to make a mental note to pick up one of his records. Perhaps a Welsh duet one day, eh Andrew?

Really, Nick's whole band is great. Love hearing Johnny Scott's elegant playing on guitar and seeing Bobby Irwin and Matt "Rockin' Reg" Radford keep the rhythm on drums and bass, respectively.

Maybe Sir Nicholas read this thread - probably one of your avid setlist fans by now ...

Maybe it's alredy happened, along with about 70,000 others ...
