BIG year for live shows?

Recommended Posts

Yesterday I was thinking about Poplar Creek, a local outdoor shed in the NW suburbs of Chicago that closed back in the early 1990s and I had a realization. I saw so many concerts there in the summer of 1989....

Metallica and the Cult

Allman Bros and Little Feat

Bob Dylan

Neil Young and Maria McKee

Jerry Garcia Band and Ratdog

Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna

Stevie Ray Vaughn and the Stray Cats

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and The Replacements

along with a dozen Grateful Dead shows all over the Midwest during the spring and summer tours. This is not counting all the concerts I saw at Metro, Lounge Ax, Batteries Not Included and other small venues. How did I have the time for this? Where did the money come from? Who accompanied me? Why cant I do this now?!

Anyways.....what's your BIG year for concert going?

And, 1989 was a HUGE year for shows for me, as well:

• Violent Femmes, The Pogues, and Mojo Nixon at Poplar Creek

• fiREHOSE and Uncle Tupelo at the Blue Note (Columbia, MO)

• The Pixies at the Blue Note

• Living Colour with Drivin' n Cryin' at Jesse Hall (Columbia, MO)

• Fishbone at Jesse Hall

• The Replacements at The Aragon

• Meat Puppets at The Blue Note

• Neil Young at Poplar Creek

and a whole bunch more that I cannot remember right now.

That Neil Young show was great, supporting his Freedom album. By total chance, I received a first gen recording of that concert a few months afterwards from a kid I worked with whos dad recorded the show.
