Mr. Heartbreak
Oh my God. I almost envy you having that experience so recently. I think the first time I listened to A Love Supreme was in 1990. Been working my way through all my Coltrane CDs in chronological order. I have pretty much everything, although there are a couple minor albums I only have in digital format. I've come to the conclusion that I still love the "classic quartet" the most by a long shot, and that most of the material that came after Tyner and Jones left is not enjoyable to listen to. It's interesting, it's intense, but it rarely swings. A fair bit of it is just unlistenable, especially the stuff with multiple horns soloing simultaneously. I think Alice Coltrane's Journey to Satchidananda and Ptah the El Daoud are actually better than most of John's last few albums. But the run he had from '62-'65 is just unparalleled.
