  1. After saturday night I completed a silly goal I set out for myself back in January 2000. I have now seen at least 1 concert a month the whole decade (yes I keep a list). Actually right now I have seen one a month since April 98...I don't know what to make of it!?Now my next goal is to visit all 50 states...at 49...I am going to try my absolute hardest to make it to NORTH DAKOTA before I turn 30 in August! :rock

I want to see the list. I keep lists for every movie that I see in a theater. It helps me to remember certain things. I should do lists for concerts that I've seen, but as of yet (?) I don't go to many anymore. Goals: i go to the gym almost every day. I learned how to spell Connecticut.

These two posts would be the greatest entries in the history of this board if:

    1) remphish lived in South Dakota

    2) u2roolz lived in Connecticut

  2. I never heard anything about Wilco playing the Opening Ceremony, just a free concert in a park outdoors. Any un-inviting of youngsters wouldn't be any fault of Wilco. Although, maybe they could recruit the children's choir to be their backup singers for Just a Kid, and then let them do a couple of their own tunes.

  3. We all know Wilco

Have a soft spot for children

    Kinsley's kids have it.

    Very good work Wise!

I subtracted one point for leaving out the apostrophe that shows possesion, but you put it in the right syllable pattern very well.

  4. I have pictures. Maybe a couple too many to attach here ;)

Were some of the Jeff photos taken at the Disney Hall in LA? The fact that he (maybe) has been in that building with a guitar gives me hope that he'll want to do a solo show there one of these days!

I have some pics, but I refuse to be in a calendar with Charles Harris - too intimidating!!

  5. I like it - I understand that not everyone will. It is pretty messy and chaotic, a bit like the lunatic edges of Radio Cure taking over the asylum. The buildup to the chorus is brilliant. I'd subtract the piano solo at two-thirds in which saps all the energy out of the song, but otherwise I'm a fan.

Alright, based on your description I went back and listened to more of it. I actually do like the chorus part. I just couldn't get past the first 10 seconds originally. The best part though is that I started checking out some of their other stuff there on YouTube and I rather liked it. I might need to check them out a bit more later.

  6. P.S. Does anyone else think her Shankar connection is helping her get more attention than she deserves?

No. 99% of the public has no idea that they are related, and a considerable chunk of this country has no idea who Ravi is in the first place. It probably helped get her in the door at the record company, but talent kept her there. That and she's smoking hot!

  7. Somehow I get the sense that the poor girl who was interviewing them had neither heard Wilco nor seen a baseball game. Just a hunch. Having said that, she did give it a valiant effort. I did think that it was rather funny that they put video of Bernie Williams over the discussion about winning a world series and a grammy. Totally threw her under the bus.

  8. Seeing as my class keeps asking me everyday about the contest, does anyone have any idea when they'll announce the winners? Not saying I'm expecting anything, I just want to have answers for pesky 11-year olds.

  9. I'm going to go with actual living people, for no other reason than I'm delusional and willing to hope against all odds that this could actually happen.

    Jeff Tweedy - gtr/voc.

    Neil Finn - gtr/voc.

    Neko Case - gtr/voc.

    Nels cline - gtr

    Glenn Kotche - drums

    Geddy Lee - bass/some keys/vocals

    Garth Hudson - organ

    Andrew Bird - violin/voc.

Pat Sansone - keys/some gtr (since we already have a lot)

Sarah MacLachlan, Aimee Mann, Feist - backing vocals*

    Total Pros - horns

*Yes, I know that they all play one or more instruments. But we already have a rather guitar-heavy lineup and I think they would make for a really interesting vocal mix together.

  10. Last years album of the year says it all:

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Raising Sand

Most boring album of the year, a total snore....

Anyone complaining about W(TA) should listen to this one. Which one would you rather have on a desert island?

Hmmm... well, if you listen to some on this site, W(ta) is by far their weakest album in a while so they must be a shoo-in for album of the year! :stunned

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised either way. They could be completely snubbed just as easily as being up for multiple big awards.

  11. Surely this kid has it in the bag....

Actually, another kid who didnt' end up writing a haiku blurted out while watching Monday in Ashes, "That guitar is cool, but I sure hope I don't win that suit!"

Much laughter ensued and about 6 kids tried to work that into their poems.

The one that kills me is this one:

    Father, please don't leave

The moon says that you love me

    I'm sad without you

His dad passed away at the beginning of the school year. I was fairly choked up typing that in.

  12. This came out quite nicely! Not everyone came up with a haiku, but those who did really nailed it! Here is my emailed submission to Wilcoworld. (Note: I put their names in the email, but have removed them here.)

    ____________________________________________________

Kind Sirs and Madames of Wilcoworld,

After finding out about your haiku contest I decided to use this as an opportunity to extend our curriculum and turn it into a class project. Seeing as none of the students had ever heard of Wilco, (they're more into 50 Cent and Slipknot, if that gives you an indication of what I'm up against) it was also an opportunity to expand their horizons a bit. We listened to several songs and wrote specifically about those songs, as well as viewing selected portions of "Ashes of American Flags."

Most of the class was writing down observations and working with vocabulary, while another chunk was actually able to take those observations and turn them into a haiku. Those are the ones I'm submitting here, even if some don't exactly fit the traditional 5-7-5 format. We hope you enjoy them!

    Sincerely,

Mr. Kinsley and the students of Room A211, Van Nuys Middle School

P.S. - They are all convinced that I'm going to keep the guitar for myself if one of them wins, so if they do win please send it to Dr. Barner's (the principal) attention, so that she can make sure I don't run off with it in a moment of weakness. ; )

  13. I started with ITMWLY. When I mentioned that they did a song for the Spongebob movie they got into that. I'm saving that one for Tues or Weds. 6th graders are very concrete thinkers. When I asked them what it sounds like they said "electric guitar" and "rock." :ohwell We'll get there, you'll see!

  14. What if their entry wins the guitar? Would you tell them or keep the guitar yourself as commission for introducing them to Wilco music?

No, I'd gladly hand it over to the winner. The only thing better than me winning the guitar would be for one of them to win it. Mmmm, actually me winning would be better, but one of them getting it would be a close second.

Besides, if this were a ploy to get the guitar I would have just given them an "assignment" and not mentioned the guitar. We did our first attempt on Friday... it did NOT go very well. They weren't into the music at all and they don't get haiku. Hopefully next week will be better.
