  1. Great show, and I have to hand it to Vancouver - I have troubling memories of Jeff pleading with the audience for any sign of life at the 2004 Orpheum show, but the crowd (and band) were on fire all night. My only complaint, as always, is that I'd like to have heard more songs from "The Whole Love". They only get back here every 2 years (as John points out in a recent interview!), this may be the only chance we have to hear "Black Moon" "Standing O" "Capitol City" "Rising Red Lung" etc...

  2. Greg is one of the nicest people I have met! Big Deerhoof fan. I really wish I'd seen them open for Wilco (what tour was that?), although it sounds like it wouldn't have been ideal. I remember somebody sitting behind me at one night of the residency saying how Deerhoof were the worst opening band he'd ever seen. I just think they're incredible!

That said, when I got the Deerhoof/Tweedy single in the mail, I didn't realize Jeff had just sung over "Behold a Marvel...", and I was already pretty used to Satomi's version on the last Deerhoof album. I think I prefer her take, but I love the idea, and can't wait to hear the Wayne Coyne one (or the Flaming Lips/Deerhoof EP!!).

  3. I picked it up about six years ago in Vancouver - black vinyl, though. Saw it on the wall and took a gamble, not being particularly into UT at the time. Well, that changed quickly. :)

Am I reading correctly than in addition to the 2xLP, you got a separate 7" as well as individual Rockville editions of those UT albums (which do indeed seem to go for a fortune!)? Your boyfriend did very well!!

  4. Berry wrote the music for Everybody Hurts but lyrics are definitely Michael's - the band was prepared to abandon the song before Michael started humming a melody to himself. Doubtful about Driver 8 as well.

Michael admitted recently that Mills has had creative input on the lyrics since the beginning.

  5. side 4 is:

    1. Lyrical Stance (I've Got A)

    2. Formerly Hail Centurion

    3. One More Bottle To Go

    4. Something or Nothing

    5. The Days of Wine and Booze

there's also a couple of mix differences in the album proper on the vinyl version (i only remember one offhand, going into track 3, but i thought there was another)

  6. Wow. I'll approach this from a different angle and then get to the obvious: "I'll Fight" "Sonny Feeling" "Country Disappeared" and "You and I" all in the same show? That's amazing considered how much restraint they exercised in showcasing those songs on the February tour when I saw them (and all I really wanted to hear were the new tunes).

And "Kicking Television"?!?!? I requested this a comically offensive amount of times for the February shows I attended and thought maybe I had a shot at hearing it, as I personalized each request with weak attempts at humor, and was none too surprised when they didn't play it. But now! Wow. Honestly this set just makes me feel even worse about the west coast tour earlier this year, like they were just getting started. Probably my fault for having high expectations, maybe I should just hope and pray for a west coast residency sometime.

"Laminated Cat", wow! I'd been avoiding the Evening With sets but I guess this was played then, too. Wow. Great year for midwest, east coast, and overseas Wilco fans apparently. :lol

This show's on dime already, btw...

  7. Don't care as long as it's ON THE WEST COAST. Seastorms kept me from seeing his last show in Vancouver and I'll beginning to think I'll never get another chance to see him solo without travelling to Chicago (which I would happily do with more notice, in fact I wish I'd skipped the Pacific Northwest Wilco shows in February to save for his solo benefit gigs in March and then caught one of Wilco's 'Evening With' shows...). Being a west coast Wilco fan just doesn't seem to have any perks at all.

  8. Awesome, thanks for sharing the Kung Fu link! I was beginning to get concerned when I saw that the Record Store Day availability was limited to 1000 and not 5000 like the initial post said.

As for anyone questioning the value, I definitely think there's some inferior versions on this release ("Misunderstood" "Late Greats" "I'm The Man.." and a few more all sound like crap) but the title track along with most of disc 2 are all brilliant, as are 'Handshake' 'Hell is Chrome' and several others on disc 1. That bonus version of 'Loneliness' is to die for, and I have high hopes for the other tracks. Price-wise, I believe I paid about the same for the R.E.M. Live at the Olympia box, which was 4 LPs (with amazing sound), 2 CDs and a DVD, so it's not the greatest deal I've ever seen, but the points made above re: quality of the vinyl are valid...

  9. I don't worry about quanities, the Pavement LP last year was limited to 2,500 copies and my local shop still has about a dozen of them...

    Seriously?! Where do you live?

This KICKING TELEVISION box actually sounds amazing, considering the sound quality on the CD and the potential for how good it could sound on vinyl, and with 8 bonus tracks?! Price seems reasonable to me, I'd pay that alone for just the first 6 songs on disc 2 on vinyl!

Of course, it will probably be impossible for me to obtain, but here's hoping...

  10. Wilco (the song)

I Am Trying to Break Your Heart

    Bull Black Nova

    You Are My Face

    One Wing

    Shot in the Arm

At Least That's What You Said

    Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway(again)

    Jesus, etc

    Handshake Drugs

    Deeper Down

    Impossible Germany

    California Stars

    Sonny Feeling

    Hate it Here

    Walken

I'm The Man Who Loves You

    --

    Broken Arrow

    Misunderstood

    Spiders

    Hummingbird

    --

    Heavy Metal Drummer

    Red-Eyed and Blue

    I Got You

    Hoodoo Voodoo

    I'm a Wheel

Great show, but I'll let somebody else report. Typical 'seated theatre' crowd, I'd say. We definitely failed the "Jesus, etc" test, but the band gave 100% regardless. I'm not sure this band is even able to give anything less! It was wonderful to see Wilco in my hometown, which I never imagined would happen.. hmm.. yeah, I'll let somebody else talk about it. :lol

Califone were particularly good tonight, I thought!

edit: I should also add that they played for 2 hours and 15 minutes!

  11. There was an electronic piece they came out too for shows in 2006, but I don't remember the name.

Was it that thing that sounded like a marching army of kazoo robots? I loved that. Somebody said it was the theme to Midnight Special played on kazoos but I never knew if that was, uh, true...

  12. Wonderful show!! I'm so glad my concerns from seeing the first 2 sets were alleviated when they added 'Wilco' 'I'll Fight' and 'You Never Know' into the set. Hope to catch 'Sonny Feeling' and maybe even 'Country Disappeared' at one of the BC shows. The whole run in the middle of the set (Break Yr Heart, One Wing, Radio Cure, Pot Kettle Black, Handshake Drugs, Deeper Down, Impossible Germany..okay, every song?) was just electrifying. Stellar solo on 'Germany', as always. Was very delighted to hear 'Radio Cure'.

Set list had 'Red-Eyed', 'I Got You', and 'Casino Queen' before 'Hoodoo' but alas, curfew voodoo. :( "Hoodoo" was amazing though, Nels and Pat's duel never grows old.

Jeff seemed happy with the standing room general admission on the floor/seats in the balcony arrangement. Hope he's not disappointed tomorrow in Victoria, which is all seated (and will likely not be a wild crowd). Hope my hometown proves me wrong...

  13. Very concerned by the appearance of only 4 songs from 'the album' @ this show and Portland... I guess Oregon did get a show on this tour last year (and was there one in Washington? Spokane maybe?) but I'd hate to see them in Seattle & BC and only hear 4 'new' songs... can't believe they've dropped stuff like 'You Never Know' and 'Wilco the Song', let alone 'I'll Fight', 'Country Disappeared'...

  14. Aww I was hoping for a 'Sunken Treasure'/'Mountain Bed' opener at one of the upcoming theater gigs! I suppose there's still hope. And as long as 'Broken Arrow' doesn't go anywhere, I'm a happy boy.

Nice to see Buck McCoy make an appearance!! Must have been cool. :thumbup

Thanks for reporting the set! Eager for the next 3 shows...

Also, only 4 songs from "the album"? :upset I hope they step this up in BC as we haven't had a show in support of the new record yet...

  15. WOW BROKEN ARROW!! I really had high hopes they'd keep this in the set...amazing. Hope they do it, um, every night in Seattle, Victoria, and Vancouver. :D

So, was this an 'Evening w/ Wilco' show or did Califone open? If I can expect a show of this magnitude even w/ an opener (who I'm also excited to see), I'll quit feeling sorry for myself that the west coast isn't getting 'Evening With' shows...

  16.

He resurfaced on the sidewalk of my block the other day

yeah it's a fat check sorry charlie, honey, he's back from LA

"yeah it's a fact, check it, sorry charlie..." I think?

he's got deductions right on down the line dippin' ink cleans on all of mankind

"dependent claims on all of mankind" I think?
