  1. saw beck in august and it was just as boring as i'd expected. while he was once relevant, i knew he'd taken a turn for the worse (and http://www.lermanet.com/beck/ explains exactly why), but i never expected to see him just standing onstage, looking bored (or confused?), mindlessly droning thru half-assed (and sometimes half-performed) versions of his singles, while his (subpar) band did the bulk of his work for him.

     

    but that's neat that wilco were there. at least some talent was under that roof last night.

    According to the credits, Nels did not play on "Patient". In fact, I distinctly remember him mentioning that when he introduced the song (the only Wilco song) on his podcast.

     

     

    Oh yeah! I need to reread the liners more often. I'm often surprised to see who played what on "A Ghost Is Born".

I often read these comments saying that Nels overpowers SBS, "does every song need to end with a big Nels freakout" (particularly w/ "One Wing" being unleashed), and I just have to point out... there are really only 2 songs on SBS that end with a huge Nels solo (IG + SWTS). He does a very beautiful, tasteful solo in the middle of "Either Way", he does a solo that most people mistook for Jeff on YAMF, does another very sparse melody in "Patient With Me", and has a brief run in "Hate it Here" (which also has a Jeff solo). ...and that's it. Jeff does the solo on the title track, and the end of Walken is more of a collaborative effort. "Thanks I Get" had a (not very good, on the studio recording) Nels solo, and I think "Carried Away" has one but that's obviously overshadowed by the drum solo.

     

    I actually found Nels quite restrained on SBS..I wonder if some people think of "Impossible Germany" AS the album. If anybody was being showcased, it was John! His basslines are just solid across the entire album.

  4. Neil's bass player supposedly mentioned to somebody on the summer Europe tour that they might be playing Vancouver in the fall, so it looks like we may be in luck... I wasn't planning on seeing Wilco again this year since I was at all five residency shows, but THIS would be worth a cross-country trek for. Neil's sets on this tour have been insane.

    Caveats! 
    (1) I have a tendency to voice things alternately too thick and too thin (harmonics screw with me). I think I struck the right balance here but trust your ear.
    (2) I flip back and forth as to whether the ghost notes (the ones in parentheses) actually exist so I'll let you decide. 
    (3) Of course you should finger the entire G, Bm, and C chords (to the extent possible) but pick just the notes listed.
    (4) This is only the first two bars of the intro, there might be some subtle variations (especially with voicing) in later iterations.

  6. Now that we have a confirmed source for the tuning, I figured I'd give it a try. It's a general version but I think it's fairly accurate if you can let your mind go beyond dashes and digits on a computer screen and just try to adopt that Tweedy shake to every note I've tabbed. I think there may be a little more going on in the chords of the verse, when he's even playing, so comments or fixes would be appreciated. Here's a start, at least...

    This is based on any given live version circa 2003-2008.

     

    This is Jeff's part only, tuned to Open E (low E B E G# B E high), with a capo at the 1st fret.

    This is an often debated issue but supposedly Jeff has confirmed this tuning for the live versions.

     

    This tab is written relative to the capo, so 3 is really the 4th fret on the guitar, if you ignore

    the capo, but the 3rd fret if you consider the open strings 0.

     

    I used this version as a bit of a visual guide for folks, to indicate timepoints in the tab

  7. But HEY!!!! what happened to "the good part". that song gets stuck in my head so easily!!! Maybe soon enough we'll get some EP, or maybe some goodie that comes along with this dvd that will have all these songs on it, that'd we wonderful.

  8. I'm gonna bump this topic to hopefully open up some more discussion on the D tunings quoted by Tweedy (and to point out that in another thread, Tweedy was cited as using open E capo 1 for "Man Who Loves You", which is probably for the live version, w/ open D minor for the LP version?).

     

    Obviously Kamera, Radio Cure, and Pot Kettle Black are in "D" tunings -- does anyone have concrete reasons to apply a specific tuning to any of these? Is the F# an obvious burden on any of these, making it clearly DADAAD, or do any of them clearly need the F#, making it likely open D (DADF#AD) ?

  9. When I was able to talk to Jeff at the 2007 Living Room Show, he told me that the tuning he uses was EBEG#BE with the capo on the first fret.

     

    FINALLY! It's clearly not in standard when played w/ Wilco, nice to have this confirmation. Considering they play it EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, it shouldn't be too hard for this to get properly tabbed.. (I suppose I did just hear it 5 nights in a row, but the Residency Sickness is still lingering in my head and might impair my aural judgment...)
