Do we think Andy Shauf is going to have a new album already??? Please tell me you've heard rumours!

No rumours. Just speculation. He has a home recording space set up. So, I figure that he would've been working on new material since he was unable to tour.

  11. Yeah do you have any dirt on the Walkman?? By far I think they were my favorite band to emerge after 2000. Would be super psyched if they did anything!!! Also, always up for more parquet courts!

No dirt.  Just wishful thinking.  A Hamilton Leithauser record and/or some more solo releases from other members would suffice.

what's your over/under on guided by voices releases for 2020?

    2.5

  12. Most anticipated albums of 2020 (lots of wishful thinking)

    Holy Fuck (Jan 17)

    Andy Shauf (Jan 24)

    Wolf Parade (Jan 24)

    Constantines???

The Wrens (is this the year they release the new record?)

    Grandaddy

    Joel Plaskett

    Superchunk???

Yo La Tengo (read somewhere they've been recording at the Loft)

    Pavement???

    Supergrass???

    Doves???

    Hayden???

    War on Drugs???

    Walkmen???

    Parquet Courts???

Guided By Voices (there is a new album on the horizon.  The question at this point is how many more will there be?)

  13. Agreed. We used to stay at a motel on Route 7, just north of Williamstown, just before the Vermont line. The $ just did not justify it by 2015, so in 2017 we rented a house near Pittsfield, 22 miles away. No regrets - doing it again in June.

Same except just over the state line in Vermont. And I'm doing the same this year.  I'm staying at the Ladd Brook.  It's not the best but the price is reasonable compared to others in the area. I booked through booking.com

Yikes. I was afraid of that. I might have to wait and plan ahead for 2021. Thanks for the advice.

I'm staying at the Ladd Brook.  It's not the best but the price is reasonable compared to others in the area. I booked through booking.com The Villager Motel appears to be similar.  It's just north of Williamstown too...but on the Mass side of the state line.

  14. I'm strongly considering taking the plunge for my first Solid Sound. Are there still places to stay that don't cost a fortune (other than camping)?

Good luck...worst part about Solid Sound is the cost of accommodations in the area during the festival (if you can find a room).  It's ridiculous how much the flea bag motels charge per night. Especially for a Canadian at a time when the dollar is so weak vs the US dollar.   I guess camping is a good option if you want to save money and don't mind  not having a shower for a few days.  Having said that, the actual festival is fantastic.

  15. Didn't Scott play with Jeff during his solo set in 2010? Family Gardener maybe? Would love for a Jeff/Scott Dear Employer.

And there's the Minus 5 "Down with Wilco" album released in 2003 which was basically a collaboration between McCaughey and Wilco with contributions from Peter Buck and Ken Stringfellow (of the Posies), and others.

  16. Here are some of my early predictions:  Rolling Blackouts C.F., Unknown Mortal Orchestra, J. Mascis or Dinosaur Jr. or Sebadoh, Sleater-Kinney, Courtney Barnett, the Breeders, Ohmme, The Sea and Cake, The Essex Green, Snail Mail.  And I predict we'll see some returning acts from past lineups such as Yo La Tengo, Mac Demarco, Parquet Courts and Low.

My dream (and kind of realistic lineup) would be

    Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks

    The Breeders

    Dinosaur Jr.

    Yo La Tengo

    Sleater-Kinney

    Courtney Barnett

    Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billie

    Bob Mould

    Deerhunter

    Rolling Blackouts C.F.

    The Men

    Kikagaku Moyo

  17. I get you. I feel the same way. Rock will come around again, I think, I hope. But sometimes I think Neil Young was wrong.

It's all cyclical.  You just gotta look a little harder for the good rock music nowadays.  It's still out there.  Speaking of music festivals, Merge 30 down in North Carolina at the end of July should be stacked with lots of great rock bands.  I went to Merge 25 and it was absolutely awesome!  Such a great great lineup and an even better vibe (much like past Solid Sound festivals)

  18. This is why people call Wilco "dad rock".

ROCK being the operative word. I know I'm getting old, but I still like a lot of newer and younger bands. They're just not playing at Coachella...and hopefully some of them are playing at Solid Sound

  19. I'm always jealous of people who live in Chicago, NYC, LA, Seattle and Toronto because every band that tours around North America always plays in these cities.  Anyway, slim pickings for me this year. Is it because Ottawa is not really that good for shows anymore or is it because I am getting older and I'm a bit out of the loop and don't go to as many shows? A little of both I suppose. Also, big summer festivals have kind of ruined ruined it.  I can tell you right now, if Stephen Malkmus, Parquet Courts, Thee Oh Sees, GBV, J Mascis, Yo La Tengo, the Breeders and a few other bands that toured this year ever came to Ottawa, I would go. But I regress, here's is my very short list

Jeff Tweedy solo and Algonquin Theatre in Ottawa

Sloan at Empty Bottle in Chicago
